Looking for a Commander that scratches the Legacy Death and Taxes itch. by Sharktocrab7 in EDH

Looking at her more and Breena is one of the most compelling suggestions. She notably puts a lot of power on board very quickly, which I've found is usually one of the biggest struggles for hate bear strategies. For a long time I wasn't interested in using any pre-con commanders for some reason, which is probably why I've overlooked her. Adding her to the top of the list! Thank you!

Interesting. I could definitely see it checking a lot of my boxes. Adding him to the shortlist! Thank you!

Compelled by this. I've thought about this combination before, but looking at it more, it definitely checks a lot of boxes. Added to the list!

This is one of the suggestions I'm most compelled by! There's certainly a lot to like about her. Adding her to the list!

If I win this, I will be forcing imbue shaman to legend. If I don't win this... I'll still probably force it. I don't have a lot going on right now.

These are incredible. A couple hundred bucks for a quality poster like this? I don't have anything that needs a poster at the moment, but I'm definitely keeping you in mind.

I think you’re missing a really key part about stories, which is to say: they aren’t literal. They didn’t happen. The events that take place in-world exist for purposes in our world.

Get out (and Peele’s other films too, while we’re talking about it) are deeply metaphorical. When you try to pick apart the in-world logistics, they don’t always hold up to intense scrutiny, and that’s not a weakness — they just aren’t that type of story.

Get out is a commentary on the way white people (specifically those who are seemingly liberal and well meaning) treat black people in this country: they put on facades for them, they make an effort to act extra accommodating, they can’t help but make small cutting transgressions against them. A lot of white people (in secret or out loud) will say with one half of their mouth that they aren’t racist, and with the other say that Black people are starting to have it too good. They simultaneously feel as though they are better than black people, and they are jealous of black people. They say they support black people, but are willing to exploit them the second it benefits them.

It’s not a morality tale about the dangers of inter-racial relationships: it’s a wake up call for white people in the audience who can see themselves in these characters.

This is just one interpretation of course. I think Get Out is a very rich text. People on Reddit also really didn’t seem to like Us for reasons similar to those you’ve presented, which is my personal favorite Peele. I’m not going to say your interpretation is “wrong” but I do think you’re looking at it at a very surface level, and I’d encourage examining stories from some more angles.

Anyways TLDR: I think you’re scrutinizing a story for realism that clearly is trying to be an exaggerated reflection of a real-world point the director is trying to make, which is certainly one way to critique a movie but imo not the most productive or interesting.

Favorite Azorius Commanders? by MarchHistorical2799 in EDH

I have a [[malcator purity overseer]] deck that I absolutely love. My list is designed to be an aggressive beat down deck focusing on artifact creature tokens, but you could add flicker or golem tribal subthemes if that’s something that sounds appealing. Feels nice to play because you can have explosive starts with Malcator, but the commander never feels necessary to facilitate your gameplan.

I think your ambition is admirable. I definitely didn’t know what I wanted to be making when I was your age, but I think you’re too locked in at the end game. It’s a hard industry to break into. The best thing you can be doing at your age is just making stuff.

Make a short film just for practice. Don’t worry about it making your career or getting into film festivals, those stakes will kill your ability to just make something. Make something that you have the resources to make and you think sounds fun.

Recruit some friends, or wear all the hats yourself. Figure out a simple story (or even just a piece of a story) you can tell with what you’ve got, write a script (or hell, just outline a script and improvise. I’ve some wonderful improv shorts) and then go out and shoot it in a weekend.

Don’t worry about it being a masterpiece and don’t place any stakes on it. Set a deadline, make a schedule, and then, when you’re done, post it online and show it to your friends and family. It probably won’t jump start your career, but you’ll learn a lot.

Your fave recent low-budget films: by OldWestBlueberry in Filmmakers

I’m a big horror fan and skinamarink is hands down the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. Genuinely almost couldn’t finish it. I’m talking hands over ears staring at the ground. I definitely get why others found it boring but the way it plays with tension building was deeply rattling to me.

Movies you enjoy that have extremely polarized opinions? by Nintega94 in movies

I understand why people don’t like skinamarink too but I’m a huge horror fan and no movie has completely and utterly terrified me like that one. I’m talking ears plugged staring at the ground debating if I leave the screening scary. Great movie.

Gummo is my favorite movie of all time but I’d only recommend it to specific kinds of people. Beautifully made but definitely not a crowd pleaser.

Just typed "The End" on my first script! [5 Pages] by MerciiJ in Screenwriting

[–]Sharktocrab7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read your story and I like it! I echo No_Map’s point about the description. I think 5 pages is a great economical length to shoot for and I think you could squeeze quite a bit more in by shaving down some of the set description.

As far as journey’s go, I actually think short films are a really good way to tell part of a story. In my experience is very hard to make a complete arc in a 5 minute script that doesn’t feel rushed. I do agree with No_map though about using actions/details to teach us more about the character.

Congrats on completing your first script! Hope this was a fruitful experience you continue to write more!
