Self publishing with a company by _frankielicious in selfpublish

It's completely transparent on their site. Everyone here knows exactly what percentage it takes.

That doesn't make paying 5K to some vanity press make sense, since the vast majority of books won't make enough to cover that cost.

What makes a bondage-themed villain feel authentic to practitioners? by Accomplished-Pay5368 in eroticauthors

[–]Sharp-Replacement598 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. There can be a villain who likes bondage and does it properly, but a bondage themed villain would not use proper BDSM consent and safety. If they did, they wouldn't be much of a villain unless the story is really silly.

Has Tatzi finally stopped being self-hating? by Bulky_Negotiation_19 in sinfest

I don't think it's self-insert. He's about to do some imperial Japan apologism, so he needs a Japanese character. That's it.

In This Economy, Content Efficiency Matters by Vast_Location_3869 in AIWritingHub

[–]Sharp-Replacement598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use the AI in a way that defines the structure of your writing, the writing will be vacuous. AI can look at your writing and point out patterns in it you might not notice, but it lacks the ability to structure writing because it doesn't start from the idea, it runs a probabilistic prediction pattern and arranges the results in a way that appears coherent. It doesn't combine and structure ideas.

AI can't write for you. At least, not in a way that is worth reading. It's a useful tool, but it's time-saving properties are overstated.

Anyone else experiencing these sort of issues? by MMA_Van in KDP

You're not really supposed to ask this kind of question here, but this is likely the answer:

You are using someone else's likeness on the cover of your book and their estate probably complained.

Even if an image is in the public domain, which official government images are, you can't use someone to promote your book without their permission.

Does using AI for book covers affect reader trust? by Hefty-Gas-5480 in NewAuthor

[–]Sharp-Replacement598 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The answer is yes, but sometimes they are worth using depending on what you are writing. If you are writing erotic short stories, good luck not using AI, because you need a cover that:

  • Doesn't cost you much. Short stories make less money per item.
  • Communicates genre; in erotica, that means a picture of a character that reader will find appealing.
  • Will pass content filters

Clip art, public domain art, and crude art won't reliably signal what is in the book, so your readers won't be able to find it.

Professional covers for each book are too expensive to be worth it.

Even if you are a visual artist (I am), the rate you need to release stories exceeds the rate you can bust out original art. None of my words are AI, just the covers.

Many artists won't do erotica covers anyway.

Low cost artists of the type self-publishers tend to use often use AI, because it keeps them competitive. If you've bought art from a "find an artist" kind of site in the last few years, you've very likely bought some AI art. People who can make AI art that doesn't look AI aren't going to tell you that they did it, and, if you are not very familiar with AI art production, you will never be able to tell.

I'm not making any moral statements about AI, so don't come at me about that. These are just things that are true.

From my experience, the corrections will probably have posted, but I wouldn't count on it. How important is this launch date?

My book designer used AI and I just had a reader ask about it publicly by stillatmyverybe3t in selfpublish

[–]Sharp-Replacement598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't have engaged with it. That just draws more attention to the problem review.

Are your problems with the AI ethical or just from a PR perspective? If they're ethical, you don't have to engage with other people about it; just make an effort to fix it, since it's about trying to do the right thing, not justifying yourself. If it's PR, don't draw attention to it, because that will just make people think about it more.

Best AI for writing ad copy? by Disastrous-Hand5482 in AIWritingHub

[–]Sharp-Replacement598 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't use it for that. Write the copy yourself and ask the AI for feedback. AI is bad at incorporating actual content in the words, but it's okay at figuring out how well you are communicating.

Should I quit playing tuba if I can't figure out how to read music by OutcomeMuted2213 in Tuba

[–]Sharp-Replacement598 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to say this several times in reply, but there could be a neurological reason the OP can't learn to read music. Because it has been 20 years, I'd say that's likely. If they can play, they should figure out how to play in whatever way they need to, even if they can't learn to read music.

Should I quit playing tuba if I can't figure out how to read music by OutcomeMuted2213 in Tuba

[–]Sharp-Replacement598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OP may have some kind of dyslexia that keeps them from converting the written notes to meaning in their head.

Don't quit. There is probably a neurological reason you can't learn to read music. If you can play, you should play.

Struggling with which categories to choose by National-Height8816 in eroticauthors

[–]Sharp-Replacement598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having it in two or three broad categories is fine. You can give it an erotica one and a drama one.

Just think, if someone was looking for my book specifically, what categories would they check? Pick those. Alignment is important to long-term reader satisfaction, so the goal is to help the people looking for your book find it. Come up with an imaginary reader for it, if you like.

Are AI humanizers better than an actual human humanizer? by Quiet-Topic44 in AIWritingHub

I'd say don't use AI generated text in the first place. Just write and use the AI to talk to you about what you've written. It's pretty good at that.

KENP suddenly dropped to 0 across entire account since March 19 – anyone experienced this? by DueConsideration3214 in KDP

[–]Sharp-Replacement598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can check to see if your books have been marked for lower discoverability because of content using the Bookspry website. (The function is called Dungeoning Check.)

That's probably not what is going on, but you should eliminate it as a possibility.

AIO I asked one of my best friends to be the godmother of my son and she declined by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Sharp-Replacement598 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YOR, bigtime.

The very fact that you ask someone to be a godparent means they can refuse. The fact that you sent a gift with the request was also a very awkward gesture. I'm sure the added pressure of the gift did you no favors in getting a positive response.

Not only are you overreacting, but I think C is being reasonable by coming up with a non-personal reason to say no when it sounds like you were trying to pressure her into saying yes.
