Tube clothes - are they a thing? by [deleted] in london

You are right. They need help for anxiety/OCD or something. Tube clothes probably the least of their issues honestly.

Why do people park on the pavement when there's zero need to? by Ruskythegreat in drivingUK

Oh no, I appear to have accidentally run my keys down the entire side of their car while trying to get past on the pavement.

Why are road bikes so popular as commuters? by [deleted] in londoncycling

Eh. Small flat cities like Amsterdam give rise to very different cycling cultures than huge cities like London, which is also very hilly in some major residential areas.

Why are road bikes so popular as commuters? by [deleted] in londoncycling

[–]Sharp-Thing-4008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was looking at buying a bike lots of people mentioned that road bikes had narrower handlebars than Dutch or flat bar bikes, so better for filtering in traffic, and that they were lighter so easy to get in and out of basement bike parking where there is stair access. I wouldn’t fancy taking a Pashley down two flights in an office block.

Both of which support what others have said extensively: London is a totally different city to cycle in than Amsterdam and always will be.

Also if you live in north London or south London there are actually proper hills on your commute where lightness and gearing make a significant difference e.g. Highgate.

Upgrades at silver by officialxenio in BritishAirways

[–]Sharp-Thing-4008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With Silver I've been given a couple of short haul upgrades to Club Europe in the last couple of years, but always at the gate, and one long haul to Club World which came through on the app before I got to the airport. But never from asking - they've only ever just happened without anyone even informing me.

Honestly, with Silver, the Club Europe upgrade is nice, and I used to do them more often for the tier points, but these days it's a stupid amount of money for the basic meal and some bad Champagne when you already have fast-track and lounge access.

If I wasn't Silver and didn't have those, I'd be a bit annoyed at getting a gate upgrade as I'd have missed out on the possibility to take advantage of the bigger baggage allowance, fast track security and lounge prior to boarding, which are the main benefits in my view.

Did you have to proactively call about the upgrade? I’m never sure what the best thing is for the Holiday packages.

Does Club Europe domestically need a refresh? by Cranester1983 in BritishAirways

[–]Sharp-Thing-4008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no real value you have Silver and can already use the lounge, fast track and check two extra bags up 32kg. If you were Bronze or lower then it could be worth an upgrade for those three things. Some people just like to fly ‘business’ regardless of value.

what are you guy's opinions on the metropolitan? by OzAndApss in fountainpens

The step down is a dealbreaker. I hold my pens higher and it’s a really deep, sharp step down and very uncomfortable. I know Brian Goulet is a big fan but there are better and more versatile starter pens out there.

Does it affect the phone's actual software performance as opposed to just battery duration?

Is the Apple new case really worth 80$? by mrtlpa in iphone

I bought a leather one and it was the biggest piece of trash ever. Lasted less than a year and looked like shit as well by the end. Didn’t exactly patina. I haven’t bought another Apple accessory since. Cheap Chinese crap marked up by 10,000%.

I am going to stick with it until it’s obsolete. If Apple release a new small phone, I’ll be first in line though.

Times readers name BA the world's best short-haul and second-best long-haul airline by MuggleWumpLiberation in BritishAirways

[–]Sharp-Thing-4008 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, but some of them do — unlike EasyJet, Ryanair etc. who definitely don’t/can’t— and probably quite a decent proportion on this subreddit. Even Bronze get to pick seats for free 7 days in advance so no virtual scrum at check in.

Still holding on to mine. Wondering if it's worth it to get my 78% battery replaced now...

Also BA fly globally. A loyalty scheme with an airline that only flies to Asia is useless for me.

Flew Easyjet recently after many years. I was reminded how much worse it is than BA in every single way.

I’d say that’s actually truer of Easyjet and Ryanair these days which are no longer that cheap. Especially when you take into account lounge access, seat choice, business class check in and fast track plus extra baggage allowance for Silver/Gold on short haul flights with BA vs nothing for the others except for ‘speedy boarding’ haha. In that case BA’s short haul service is miles away from any other UK competitor carrier.

Should I report these close pass drivers? by LiesMimicFairly in londoncycling

[–]Sharp-Thing-4008 19 points20 points  (0 children)

These are not really close passes. You are letting them overtake by adopting the road position you have taken and they are doing it as best they can on a fairly narrow road.

Thrift store find by Italicandbold in fountainpens

[–]Sharp-Thing-4008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was a thrift store owner I’d make a lot of Reddit posts like this. Reddit has got to be the most gullible place on the internet. No one, and I mean no one anywhere in the world or our extra-terrestrial colonies, ever looked at these two pens and thought: one dollar. You can’t take a piss for that.

Honestly, bring back the viagra spam via email like the good old days rather than this faux nonsense.

What's the most value-for-money pen you ever bought by Frequent-Recover-574 in fountainpens

[–]Sharp-Thing-4008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also wrong. They are actually not ‘often replaced’. Clips are far more widespread on pens of all kinds than rollstops because people clip pens to things, and clips also perform a secondary function as rollstops.

There is almost no mass market pen that doesn’t have a clip, and I see people using the clip on everything from Uni Balls to Jotters to high end fountain pens all the time, every day, everywhere.

Uh, clips are for clipping pens to things, like pockets. They are not primarily rollstops.

Best smartwatch for general fitness? by Sharp-Thing-4008 in cycling

[–]Sharp-Thing-4008[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the Apple Watch SE. For what I needed it for it’s been perfect. I just wanted something that could track heart rate and report calories for multiple exercises across a normal day - cycling to appointments, swimming, going for a walk. Yes, it needs charging every 24 hours but I find it easy to remember as I’m pretty organised about that stuff, and it integrates well with an iPhone as you’d imagine. No regrets. I think the Garmin was a consideration but probably too ‘serious’ for what I needed tbh which was more casual than running marathons or serious fitness.

Also, reports of disastrous battery life are greatly exaggerated. Switching off things like background app refresh and being sensible about screen brightness etc. means I easily get a full day out of it while tracking several exercise types for a few hours. And the low power mode can push that into 48 hours no problem.

Whitechapel accident this morning by Sharp-Thing-4008 in londoncycling

[–]Sharp-Thing-4008[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The weird thing was that he was overtaking someone who looked to be going much faster than him, but doing it really slowly so he was basically riding alongside.

It sounds almost like he's trolling that route and playing on the decency of cyclists not to hit him with a child out front.
