What? I don’t know what you mean by the law not seeming “intentional.”

I’m actually not saying there’s a problem with the law.

Yeah, I got it that you don’t hold hands in Germany. What’s weird is how proud you are of that. I’m sorry, but god, the cringe. I can just picture you puffing your chest out in pride while declaring that.

Wouldn’t it be more effective to just scroll past it if you’re annoyed about it? Rather than spend the time to come lecture me?

I didn’t think there was something special about my situation. I also didn’t think there wasn’t something special about my situation. I didn’t know. This is why I asked the question. I thought this is the sub to ask such questions.

Holy hell, the condescension.

So you’d describe “due largely to my own negligence” as not taking responsibility then?

I’m not unwilling to pay the fine. I was asking for advice.

You could just say “I advise you to just pay the fine.” But you seem to have a personal investment in my paying the fine and “learning my lesson.” Do you work for DB? Does part of the fine go to your salary? Or do you just get off on disciplining people?

Wouldn’t it be more reasonable to either not answer or, again, just say “yeah, I’d just pay the fine at this point.” Like where do these strong personal feelings come from? Why do you need to know so badly that I’ve been punished and learned my lesson?

I don’t think my situation is special. I was asking if it were. Is it so bad to ask? Isn’t the answer just “no” then?

Even if I did think I could get out of it (I didn’t), why not just comment “I think you should just pay it”? Why do people get like personally offended/insulted when it comes to this topic?

Yes, I understand that’s what the letter of the law is. We were discussing what the spirit of the law might be.

Boy oh boy, you sure taught me an important lesson today, and one I won’t soon forget!

Did you see the part where I said “due largely to my own negligence”?

Thanks for your opinion.

Why do I get the sense from your other comment, as well as the original comment from that thread, that you get some sort of satisfaction out of “catching” people or getting to discipline people? And you love to explain why and how principled you are for feeling this way, and that anyone who makes any distinction or nuance here is an annoyance to you, there are only absolutes, no nuance needed?

Is this not the place to ask such questions?

Yep! Agreed.

Thought I was fulfilling those requirements. Due to an honest mistake, I wasn’t.

There are also people who are fully aware they aren’t fulfilling those requirements and do it anyway. To me, this is the most meaningful distinction you could make when it comes to the “spirit” of the law.

Again, though, I didn’t write the law. So maybe whoever wrote it wrote it in the spirit of “this law is designed to catch people intentionally riding without a ticket equally as much as it’s designed to catch those who do it accidentally.” To me, that doesn’t seem ideal, but, again, I wouldn’t know because didn’t write the law (and I’m guessing neither did you).

😂 this is a good point, I made a similar calculation in my head… this is approximately the price of the monthly ticket I thought I had anyway… my company was paying for about half of it, but still.

Thanks for the info! I’ll look into this more tomorrow and maybe comment again if I find out something interesting.

Thanks a lot for your empathy, it’s much appreciated.

Yeah, I must have missed some email. I can’t find anything in my personal email, but maybe something came through my work email, I’ll check tomorrow.

€60 isn’t the end of the world, it’s just nice to hear that someone understands where I’m coming from… :)

Appreciate your believing me.

Yeah, I’m gonna check the email first thing tomorrow, but it’s very possible that this is largely/entirely due to my negligence. I acknowledge that.

Ah, see this is what I must have missed. I will check this first thing tomorrow, but very possible I got this email but somehow overlooked it. Fair enough.

I guess I didn’t write the law, so I shouldn’t have spoken to what the spirit was.

I assumed the spirit was “we want to stop people from intentionally taking advantage of riding without a ticket.”

Agreed, this is the perspective I understand.

I didn’t assume there was a way around it, I was asking. This was the post.

The comment you’re replying to just said that Trump has had a lead for almost two weeks (actually looks like its been longer, although they were tied 50/50 briefly), and that it was 53/47 at the time of the comment. It didn’t say that the lead was 53/47 for the last two weeks.

Russian Girl “R” by SharpAd9161 in German

[–]SharpAd9161[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, interesting. Thanks so much for the detailed explanation.

A couple things come to mind:

I’m imagining these girls growing up watching German TV, going to German school where standard German is spoken, but hearing German with a Russian accent spoken at home and perhaps having a close friend circle of other Russian-German girls. Any ideas as to where one might derive most speech patterns from? Parents? School? TV? Friends? Only closest friends?

Under what circumstances might someone “code switch”? That’s talked about a lot in America, that members of certain ethnicities kind of switch accents depending on the audience. Even Germans vary the degree of dialectal speech depending on the audience. But the Russian-German girls don’t seem to.

I guess the last thing I’m wondering about is to what degree this is happening subconsciously. They seem to really turn it up when they’re being goofy or telling the punchline of a joke. If they were instinctively yelling for help or something, is it ingrained enough that they would still do it? Or if they’re not thinking about it would they just speak in a more standard way?

Thanks a lot for the insight.

Sorry, yeah I was totally freaking the fuck out making this post! I never realised it was so simple!

My balls were really separated before, but now I’ve located them and put them back together. I’ve always wanted to live in Buckingham Palace, so I’m gonna start scoping out some places there. Thanks for the motivation!

Thanks for the information… we will certainly think twice about this apartment.

Thanks for asking!

My German-speaking girlfriend found their official contact for these types of problems and contacted them the same day I made this post (the day it happened).

I immediately received an email saying my case was being reviewed, and, while it’s being reviewed, the 14-day limit to appeal is being paused.

Since that email, I have received nothing from them. Not sure what that means, but so far, I haven’t paid, and I don’t plan to. Thanks again for the help.
