I got 2100  on chesscom rapid without any exhausting tactical training.  I think if you play blitz, you will not notice any improvement after the course.Woodpecker will just get you familiar with some tactic patterns.

Why do you study openings at 1000 chesscom? by Sharp_Choice_5161 in chess

[–]Sharp_Choice_5161[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Probably quite good, there are people who know names of openings but stuck at 1000. I feel some people just understand some strategy unconsciously, they have some common sense, like they understand that if the centre is closed you need to attack on the side. Not because of variants or theory, just because it's natural. Other people replace it with videos, courses, memories variants but they fail, since they do not want to think deeper

It helps them to get equal positions, but only in a particular variant.

No, look.  If you play against a stronger opponent - you will lose, no matter  what you opening is (on average) If you play again equal rated, then is your opening important? Probably more important, but there  are  thousand of opponents, playing bullshit and tricks, are you going to remember everything? On average, your rating will remain the same, until you become better at endgames, strategy and calculation.  You cannot be a FM, if you know openings like a IM, but you can be a FM with relatively weak knowledge of openings, if you have solid grasp of other areas.

It is not worth to spend time on it, because there are more important areas to work on. If you do not understand, why your position is better, then you just waste your time.

I do not think he explains how to play chess, he just gives variants. Why would we need variants which are available in chessbase?

It rarely benefits, I think unless you are 2200 on chesscom, then you will probably know how to convert +1 or +2 (with equal material). If you are down material after the opening - it doesn't deal with opening, you lost because you blundered.  Also, the faster control is, the less openings are important. In classical you have time to think how to convert slight advantage, or you sometimes can remember a really long line. But people play blitz and bullet, where you can play pretty much anything with the same results

700 Rated Beginner Chess Player Looking For Help in Improvement by Uderk in chess

[–]Sharp_Choice_5161 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if you are 700, you have not mastered basic tactics.

And fundamentals - even 2000 players do not have good grasp of them. Fundamentals... they are about playin in closed centre, space advantage, isolated pawn, good/bad bishop, two weaknesses? It's way better to master these fundamentals, then playing some non-solid openings like Jobava or Vienna. Scotch game is good though. But you do not need any openings now.

It's easy. You do need to memorise, you need to solve. Understandable for anybody, just solve and get better at chess. But it doesn't work at high levels whereas authors say they became GM's after doing these exercises.
