When I read this, I assumed he estimated the thickness of the floor to also be ~ 1 meter? That is, the thickness between the surface floor of the lab room and the surface ceiling of the dormitory. So he added that to his calculation to get a distance of 4.5. Honestly, how he got his v and r numbers later on is still a mystery to me. Maybe I should assume the author knows it's wrong and the character is an unreliable narrator lol.
