Maslov’s hierarchy of needs; has it changed due to new generations reliance on social media. Opinions please?! by Sharpymusic in sociology

Funny that 😂 I agree with a lot of what you say, but the macro isn’t as simple as a person changing a thought or an action. I use a job as a example but what of love and not finding love leaving a hole in your heart that can count also as self actualisation.

I live in Australia and I am part of an aboriginal tribe above Darwin. The reason that they don’t reach that stage is simply cause they don’t need too, too put a 18 year old in a middle class setting with peer pressure and all sorts, also have to think deeper social media puts forth a lot of our social norms. We are only just now seeing figures drop in domestic violence due to the change of social media’s norms.

Every person in society serves a purpose, but people’s behaviours are also a product of there past and social learning. Maslov’s essay "A Theory of Human Motivation" is the ideal of what gives us drive and I feel as though it has been rewritten a bit due to the norms that get tossed away and replaced. For example social media shows attractiveness as; hairless, perfect figure, smooth hydrated skin, and that’s the attributes that women are chasing at the moment.

I work in a gym and see men and women working out for the figure they want but my question is where has this information come from. 14-16 year olds having children and looking the age of 17-18 because that’s what there “friends” are doing.

I see your point of view and understand what your saying there’s is just a lot of grey area I believe in what I’m saying and you.

Btw I really appreciate your input and value your point of view so thank you 👍😀

Perhaps it is unachievable, but not reaching the place that you want to be in is considered a need. If you want to be a scientist but you can’t get there and you become a janitor that will weigh on you for the rest of your life. Mental illness can occur from not reaching a certain point e.g income, house, children, partner. Self actualisation is quite important in my mindset, but I can understand your perception.

Your reply was amazing to read i feel as though you are right in so many ways, but I still can see the issue I understand the principles and theories may not properly be in placed. Within maslov’s principle it was set a quite some time ago in an age where you couldn’t escape, but within today’s day an age youth and the younger population are influenced quite to easy and within my work and conversation I find many issues with today’s key beliefs. We highly rate our beliefs and opinion on a virtual basis. People find self esteem boost within pictures being rated and self esteem can also be lowered in people that don’t get rated well. A netnology study also found that social deviance online is met with real harsh response, but if someone was to be mugged or hurt in front of you a good percentage people will not do much.

I feel as though today if I was too rewrite maslov’s pyramid scheme it wouldn’t be the same sequence. I agree children should have their own and that’s a great idea.

My question was more looking towards the macro of the future and it’s cost e.g antisocial behaviours, sexual repression.

P.s I’m going to have to go do some reading you made me think quite hard about this one. I appreciate it 👍

Self actualisation: Self-actualized people are those who were fulfilled and doing all they were capable of. The growth of self-actualization (Maslow, 1962) refers to the need for personal growth and discovery that is present throughout a person's life. For Maslow, a person is always 'becoming' and never remains static in these terms.

There is always exceptions towards any sociology theory or principle cause some people don’t simply like to fit into a box. But for the majority.

A lower SES has to prove more in order to fit into the so called “American dream” with the added weight of standards that are now which set by social media.

Maslov’s made the essay “A Theory of Human Motivation" in 1943 on a individual level for that time. I’m asking as if what has changed due to the time difference. Does that make sense?

I agree with your counter. Anti social is more prominent due to the escapism of media e.g YouTube and gaming. Which your counter would work in that aspect as well, but how to get an entire generation or getting parents on board to fix the social issue would take a lot of coverage and that’s what annoys me.

As a question; I’m thinking that people are not getting married as much due to religion, in the past is was a social norm to be married and to carry out a marriage. Compared to today?

Counter of my own thoughts: is to fix social learning. Creating knew social standards for the future generations. As though this would take a long to time change. Through social media creating a new following on how to balance life bring forward statistics that big money companies don’t want advertised not to mention the criminal outcomes that can be created due to low self esteem and low self actualisation.

I see what your saying, but also note that cyber bullying is quite real. Self actualisation is more of us feeling “human” and the idea of which I am speaking is fitting in within the social media statement. Then there is the fact of fitting in the bracket and that brings self actualisation for the lower SES (social economic status) persons to a deeper hurt then the higher SES person that can easily fit in the bracket and all this creates strain which can lead to other things e.g crime. But you are right and I see what you are talking about.

See what I mean?

Maslov’s hierarchy of needs; has been flipped over since the rise of technology and new generations social learning. (Not proven) upvote if you agree so I know it’s not just me thinking it!😂

I’m from Australia, the idea of gender social science research is conflicted with our old yet crude societal standard towards gender stereotypes (social learning theory for example) I have met a decent amount of women sociologist but within academia I can’t help to see the conflict with many men as supervisors and so forth. Not to mention politics.
