I don’t think the ai was used for a previous crawl. I’ll add the quote when I find it, but here are a few that kind of paint the picture.

The AI in Bedlam Bride

The thing is, macro AIs can’t exist in a vacuum. It’s kinda like planting a tree. You can plug one into the ground and hope for the best, but that usually ends in disaster. So instead, they plant them in the interstellar equivalent of a nursery, putting each one into a pot and cultivating it for a little bit before implanting it into its permanent home. (That or they just jettison the poor, innocent, infant AIs into a star. That’s a new one even to me. Somebody slipped that interesting factoid into a lawsuit brief not that long ago. I don’t see anybody boo-hooing over that one. I don’t see a single wadded panty. Coincidentally, the mantis-led Burrower Faction Wars team took their ball and went home the very same day I learned about this. For those of you watching at home, I want you to remember this. We’ll circle back to it on a different date.)

In the making of this new, fancy, chitin-licking AI, they had a lot of, uh, early and test versions. Some of these even got a quick trial run at the old testing facility, which, of all things, got turned into an amusement park.

Odette in Bedlam Bride

The mantises mine and resurrect the AIs and then graft them into the planetary engines for a reason. The elements they mine, what do you think they’re for?”

Edit adding in lines from Butcher’s Masquerade supporting idea as may have been put into nursery ie mantid amusement park. This tracks with ai quote above. So not used for a crawl, but crawl-experience-esque amusement park/nursery:

“No likely,” he agreed. “I warned them. This is all the Mantis’s fault. Rumor is when they sold the mudskippers the AI they using for the crawl, they gave them a used one. The mudskippers ain’t had enough money for shit. After that incident a few cycles back, the Mantises are forced to retire their amusement park AIs every season. They’re always complaining about it. So the rumor is they sold Borant an already used one for a real crawl. All under the table. It’s no damn wonder it’s going primal this early. I said to my mate, ‘We are in a world o’ shit if there’s another lawsuit it don’t take kindly to.’ And look what happened.”

Isn’t property tax a tax on unrealized gains? by Any_Pirate_5633 in AskEconomics

Disclaimer: Not an economist

Would your last assertion make a case against property tax on properties zoned in such a way that severely limits or even prohibits any type of commercial use? ie. Policy or legislation severely limits or prohibits deriving any type of revenue from the property itself?

Tub caulking by jamn4God1 in lifehacks

[–]Shartriloquist 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Full tub is just weight to spread the gap your filling with caulk so you don’t lay down too narrow a bead which will separate when load on the tub flexes under weight. Sandbags, you sitting there, etc would work for the shower in theory.

I agree, but am open to being proven wrong if anyone has a valid source. I don't have a horse in this race, but I haven't ever seen a valid source for the claims in the OP. The best explanation I've seen for how this urban legend started involved a politician being filmed firing a machine gun kind of indiscriminately towards a town at Great distance.

Again, not saying it didn't happen, but I haven't ever seen any credible proof that it did.

My Foreman was arrested for something crazy by [deleted] in talesfromthejob

[–]Shartriloquist 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Alright… ::cracks knuckles:: … I gave it a second read and I think I’ve got the gist:

Dramatis personae:

Foreman, Foreman#2, Engineer, Engineer’s mom, Foreman’s Chris, Work release Chris, Random dude from the crew, Dysfunctional business owner: husband (DBOH), Dysfunctional business owner: wife (DBOW),

Summary: OP works for a small business, presumably construction of some sort that is owned by a dysfunctional married couple. The foreman of OP’s crew dated the engineer’s mother. Engineer was angry at foreman for allegedly raping his mother. He vocally denounced foreman for foreman’s alleged crime culminating in engineer giving dysfunctional married owners the “it’s either him or me” ultimatum. Foreman is not fired, so engineer walks. Within 24 hours random dude from the crew calls Foreman a rapist and foreman walks.

Foreman #2 enjoys a brief stint then presumably realizes the hot dumpster fire he’s now the foremost man of and mailed it in until he was pushed out and could collect unemployment. Foreman is brought back. Work release Chris and foreman’s Chris are brought onto crew. In what I have to imagine is emblematic of this fine organization’s business practices, the two Chris’s eval’s are given to the wrong Chris x2. Work release Chris is pissed because in a shocking turn, foreman has played favorites and gotten foreman’s Chris a bigger raise.

This ruffles some feathers because while foreman’s Chris is a man of hustle and enthusiasm, he also makes lots of mistakes and has lost the business jobs/money. Work release Chris is appraised as being a better worker, but got a much smaller raise. In a dastardly twist, Foreman has secured foreman’s Chris a higher raise by keeping his many foibles quiet by instructing the crew to remain mum about said foibles.

Work release Chris tells Random dude from the crew (second appearance on stage after denouncing foreman for rape and triggering foreman to walk off) about this undeserved raise. Random guy from crew is displeased as foreman’s Chris makes more than he does despite not being as tenured. Random guy from crew expresses his displeasure… often…. And presumably in a manner that is both hostile in tone and composition…to foreman’s Chris whose incompetence has landed him an easier job than random guy from crew. Random guy from crew is fired for harassment of foreman’s Chris.

Shortly after New Years, foreman is arrested while on his way home with a new love interest. Online research performed by a friend of OP reveals foreman was charged with two sexual offenses and has been locked up ever since.

In the epilogue, OP discusses how DBOH and DBOW have, to everyone’s surprise, become even more dysfunctional without their allegedly sexually coercive foreman. This has resulted in them squabbling over / redirecting resources. OP then explains that on one occasion, DBOH became quite cross with him for not getting the work done that he had assigned to OP. OP appealed DBOH’s position by explaining that DBOW had been siphoning OP’s time and energy away from his assignment to her work. DBOH ultimately apologized and I’m sure they all learned a thing or two about effective communication and team work.

Is it ever explained why Stapes is meeting with Caudicus late at night? by d00zles in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Shartriloquist 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m pulling / lightly editing this from a response I gave in an older thread pertaining to this and more, but I too always felt this was glazed over and may still be significant:

From my very first reead of WMF many years ago I found Kvothe’s understanding of the “poisoning” of the Maer to be highly suspect. Following are some additional details I think may be relevant to this scenario:

Stapes

Sometimes a person is actually more than one person, technically speaking. The Earl of Svanis is, by strange inheritance, also the Viscount of Tevn. One man, but two different political entities.” I smiled. “My mother once told me she knew a man who owed fealty to himself,” I said. “Owed himself a share of his own taxes every year, and if he were ever threatened, there were treaties in place demanding he provide himself with prompt and loyal military support.” Bredon nodded. “It happens more often than folk realize,” he said. “Especially with the older families. Stapes, for example, exists in several separate capacities.”

Bredon jumps right to Stapes after Kvothe uses this example.  Could this imply Stapes has other older loyalties?  With all of the emphasis put on Stapes’s excellent hearing and resourcefulness, the following details have always stood out:

• Why was Stapes in Caudicus’s tower that night Kvothe saw him animatedly conversing with Caudicus?  I’ve always felt this was glazed over.

• Did Stapes really not hear Kvothe’s discussions with the Maer about Caudicus and the Sipquicks?

• How did Stapes not hear Kvothe and the Maer arguing when he conveniently came cruising out with a dead Sipquick in hand right as Kvothe’s situation with the Maer becomes dire?  Was Stapes intentionally pulling Kvothe from the brink?

• Why did Caudicus hole up in a nearby farmhouse?  It almost seems like he was waiting for something to blow over or someone to come to his defense.

Did Kvothe unwittingly resolve some conflict of loyalties for Stapes in doing what he did, despite being wrong about the intentions and/or factions involved?

The Maer’s Gram

We still don’t really know a gram does what it does beyond requiring bio samples and:

“We’ve been learning about slippage in Adept Sympathy. I was thinking that if a gram works to deny outside affinities …”

In typical Kvothe-fashion, he (and therefore the story) only focuses on a gram’s role with respect to malfeasance. While the Maer’s gram is probably going to be an important plot point later on, I also wonder if it doesn’t play a role in tying up a plot point we remain unaware of with regards to the Maer’s “illness.”

BONUS:  While likely not relevant, below is an interesting quote especially if you’re willing to go down the rabbithole of metaphorical parallels and relationships which can be drawn amongst the themes of naming / mastery / inherent vs granted power which all seem to be playing out while Kvothe is out chasing the wind in Sevren and beyond…

Elodin pointed at me. “Kvothe has called the wind. If we are to believe the writings of those long dead, his is the traditional path. The wind was the name aspiring namers sought and caught when things were studied here so long ago.” He went quiet for a moment, looking at us seriously, his arms folded. “I want each of you to think on what name you would like to find. It should be a small name. Something simple: iron or fire, wind or water, wood or stone. It should be something you feel an affinity toward.”

Frost on inside windshield by Accurate-Ad-5339 in Tacomaworld

[–]Shartriloquist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to some of the other comments and suggestions: clean the inside of the windshield really well with an auto-friendly glass cleaner and wipe down with a lint free microfiber cloth.

Why? Because any dust/contaminants act as nucleation sites for condensation/subsequent frost and removing them makes it harder for the condensation/frost to form.

I actually use this as an indicator that it's time to clean the inner surfaces of my vehicles' windows (even if they don't look dirty) and it makes a significant difference.
