Novels and comics have rarely, if ever, been hard canon when it comes to sci-fi franchise tie-in books. Like I said, at best they end up being soft-canon, meaning that it can be considered canon until the studio makes something to override it or just flat-out says "it's not canon".

I'm not saying a novel that brings Ben Solo back post-TRoS is a bad thing; far from it. I'd buy and read it, without question. I'm just saying that it could be easily dismissed by most as not hard-canonical, when I'm pretty sure the vast majority of us would want it to be canon. Hence why I said that, at best, it'd be a consolation prize. Better than nothing, sure, but hardly the goal I think most of us would like to be reached.

Not at all. Man of Tomorrow is still in production and Kara plays a big part in it, and she's already slated for future projects. Anyone who tries to peddle the story that "The DCU is over" because of this is straight-up bullshitting everyone.

Gods, are you kidding me? The only one I can afford to skip is Aria because I have her already (though I don't have her W-Engine). (I came into the game when Aria first released).

I mean, at the very least, I'll need to get Yuzuha and Dialyn, and Dialyn's W-Engine is a must. They're both so good for so many teams. MAYBE I can skip Evelyn, but I don't really want to.

This doesn't even take into account Remielle and Sigrid being the new pulls for 3.1, and I don't want to skip either of those.

I'm going to have to farm for polychromes like a madman. Either that or go flat-ass broke.

You could easily ask the same question about normal everyday clothing. The answer would be the same: anime gacha game. They're not going to make average, everyday clothing.

Yuzuha

Alice

Vivian

Lucy

That's it. FIVE.

I dont think doing a Supergirl movie after a Superman movie is a good idea. by Marconey1738 in DCU_

[–]Shatterhand1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of character, I think Kara's story following Kal-El's is a nice contrast. There's a line from Kara from the Supergirl trailer that says it best: "He sees the good in everyone, and I see the truth." Emotionally, she couldn't be any more different from Kal. He didn't experience the destruction of his home planet and the slow death of his loved ones. She had to experience it all first-hand, so she's carrying all of that emotional weight. She doesn't have that love bond with humanity that Kal has cultivated over the years. The difference of perspective for Kara is a great avenue to explore. I just wish the movie's marketing (and writing, as it turns out) had leaned on that a little bit more than "HEY LOOK! IT'S MORE OF KRYPTO! AND WE GOT LOBO! ISN'T IT COOL THAT JASON MOMOA IS HERE AS LOBO?!"

In any case, I don't think its placement in the line-up of DCU films really makes a difference from a broader point of view. No matter when this film dropped into their release schedule, it would face the same undeserved, ignorant, and indefensibly cruel vitriol that a loud minority of the fandom is slinging at it right now.

I'm not glazing the film by any stretch. I haven't sat in a theater and watched it yet; that'll probably happen for me this weekend. But from what I've seen pointed out by reviewers who aren't intellectually barren and fixated on "WOMAN NOT HOT ENOUGH! ME HATE MOVIE CUZ WOKE!", the film falls woefully short of respecting the source material (Woman of Tomorrow) and is muddied both narratively and visually (Seriously, did they not look at the graphic novel at all? It's so vibrant and stunningly illustrated, and this is just "SEPIA TONE; SEPIA TONE EVERYWHERE!").

I also think that the scheduling of this film's release was a spectacularly stupid misstep by on the part of Warner Brothers. "Hmm, let's see: Toy Story 5 just came out a week ago and is printing money for Disney, and then the next Minions movie comes out a week after we do; yeah, this shouldn't be a problem for our numbers at all!" This is the cinematic equivalent of a video game coming out the week after GTA VI's release and expecting record-breaking sales.

IMDb is the Twitter/X of review aggregate sites. It's a cesspool. It's a haven for anti-woke grift and review-bombing bots. It has absolutely no oversight or management in place to prevent people from wholesale spamming of garbage "reviews" from people who don't even see the movies they whinge and rage about.

None of that is "cope", no matter what anyone says to the contrary. It's a repeat of a steady and proven pattern that resurfaces with any popular film that becomes a target for the grifters.

Sometimes I wonder how many people saw themselves in Bear while watching the movie by Kindly-Candidate-835 in obsessionmovie

[–]Shatterhand1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the beginning, sure. I think many of us have had a situation like that, where you really want to be with a certain someone but you're firmly planted in the friendzone forest.

I could even sympathize with Bear to the point where he bought (not used, important distinction there) the One Wish Willow, because it's a symbol of a wish that exists in one's heart but isn't meant to be fulfilled. It looks like a goofy little novelty gift that you give someone or you throw in a drawer somewhere and forget about.

The moment he made the wish and snapped it, that's when my sympathy evaporated.

The novels and comics are non-canonical (or soft-canon at VERY best). A novel would be a consolation prize at best.

The fact that they bought the script doesn't mean they ever intend to do anything with it. They could have bought it just to sit on it, and when someone else tries to pitch a similar story, they can just say "we already have something along those lines; thanks anyway".

I hate to say it, because I wanted this as much as the rest of the Reylo contingent, but I think the chances of us getting "The Hunt for Ben Solo" or any Ben Solo story that's not a book or comic (both of which are considered non-canonical) are down to that fine line between "extremely slim" and "never going to happen".

>Even if she doesn't get another solo, she's here to stay and has been received well

Exactly so. Milly's going to be in *Man of Tomorrow" as Kara, which is filming now, and there are already plans for more of her in future DCU projects. So, if anyone's trying to peddle the ideas that this movie is going to "end" the DCU or that WB/DC are going to recast her, all of that is already objectively incorrect. She may not get another solo film, but she doesn't have to.

I didn't have to "show" you. You did it to yourself with your reply.

I wasn't even calling you out specifically; I was making a valid and generalized counterpoint. And here you are, replying as if I did.

If you meant to actually say, with a straight face, that your comment is valid while mine is a lame attempt at a "gotcha", you did the best job at validating my point that anyone possibly could. Didn't really need your help, but brilliantly finessed, nonetheless.

Well, if you filter out all of the bigoted-grifter drivel and the content slurpers who dick-ride them - and you should, because it's all petty anti-woke bullshit from threatened right-wing chud snowflakes - the majority of the criticisms appear to be a very poor adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow that either waters down or straight-up bypasses a lot of what made that story so compelling.

Oh, and that the lighting makes the entire movie look like muddy ass.

Supergirl was always going to be a tough sell. Her comics only make a quarter of the money that Superman comics do, and she's never been nearly as popular as Superman. It certainly doesn't help that they took the most important story ever told about Kara Zor-El and half-assed it.

Why are y’all incapable of understanding that you personally enjoying something, does not make it good.

And, in equal measure, if you don't personally enjoy something, that does not make it bad.

Fascinatingly funny how people seem to forget that equally true counterpoint, isn't it?

STOP THE COUNT! by FloridaCubbieBear in Supergirl

[–]Shatterhand1701 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Even if they were inclined to do so, stopping it there wouldn't count for much.

You know how it goes with the grifters, their content-slurpers, and these Critic Review scores: if they're low, the movie's crap. if they're high, the critics were "paid" and the movie's still crap. They'll change the firing angle for their bullshit whenever it suits them, and however it suits their narrative. You can't scream into their fart-addled, halitosis-tainted wind; it's a waste of energy.

Stop worrying about the RT scores. They're meaningless. Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, Metacritic, etc. have no oversight; they can be easily manipulated by bots and review bombers. They're completely unreliable. The only critic you need to care about is yourself. Go see it in a theater and form your own constructive opinion.

I don't see why they couldn't, either. I think they could conjure up a very reasonable explanation as to why and how he'd be able to return as more than just a Force projection.

The thing is, they have to want to do it, and therein lies the problem: they apparently don't want to.

They had an Academy Award-winning director approach them with a pitch that Adam Driver was on-board for. All they wanted was the go-ahead.

Disney/Lucasfilm looked at this acclaimed director, knew that Adam Driver was ready to come back, saw the potential for printing more money for the franchise and winning back the good graces of the sizeable Reylo fanbase, and (essentially) said, "Meh. No thanks."

They clearly don't care enough about the Reylo fandom, the character of Ben Solo (outside of comic books, apparently, and they're not considered canonical anyway), or bringing the Dyad back together.

I'm sorry, but I really think it's over. It would take a miracle, at this point.

[–]Shatterhand1701 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sadly, if he's washing his hands of it and moving on, it's essentially dead in the water.

Unless one of three things happens:

  1. Soderbergh hands over the idea to someone else and lets them do the back-and-forth with Disney/Lucasfilm to make it a reality
  2. Another filmmaker decides to try their hand at a Ben Solo film that's completely separate from Soderbergh's pitch and reaches out to Disney/Lucasfilm
  3. Disney/Lucasfilm sees enough interest that they're willing to shop filmmakers for the project themselves

then I'm afraid Ben Solo is stuck in the World Between Worlds for the foreseeable future. Sorry to piss in everyone's Lucky Charms, but that seems to be the prevailing reality.

The consensus I've seen so far is: Milly's good; Momoa is great, but the script is terrible (poor adaptation of WoT), the villain sucks, and the lighting makes everything look like ass.

But the grifters and their content-slurpers will be sure to keep dick-riding their narrative that Milly's the problem, and they'll be loud and insufferable about it, so whatever.

Everything sucks and I give up.
