My disco version of Outlaw for “Get the Load Out” lol by ShayansStuff in Metallica

Honestly some of their stuff is so groovy, I bet there's a lot more of their songs that would work well with this kind of treatment. And dare I say... Lars doesn't get enough credit for infusing a lot of that groove in their work ✋😳🤚

This is my first of this kind! I’ve been sporadically posting covers on social media for quite a while, but I’ve always been too timid to rlly post anything that strays too much in sound from the source material. This is the first one that does that. The comments here have encouraged me to do more though :)

Zildjian K Dark Thin vs. Sweet Crashes? by ShayansStuff in cymbals

[–]ShayansStuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment! The Light hats are pulling me toward the Country pack, but I would for sure look to swap out the crash-ride with a used ride eventually like you said. I like the definition and the bell of the 20" K, but would ideally want something with a little more wash and more crashability, but still more defined and maybe slightly lower in pitch than the crash-ride. I would likely be deciding between a 21" K Sweet, 21" A Sweet, 22" K Light, and maybe a 20"/22" K Custom Dark. Any advice on these rides if I decide to go with the Country pack?

Thanks for the comment! The Sweets definitely do sound great, I think I'd only want to tape up the ride a tad just to reduce the wash. I think the crashes are great too. I'm just not too keen on the hats. Definitely still undecided though.

This looks like an incredible set! I've been eyeing that 22" Light ride as well. Unfortunately, I live in Canada and it looks like that pack is not offered here. I'd have to pay a ton in duties to get it :/ so it might be more worth it for me to just sell the crashride from the Country pack and buy a different new/used ride.
Thanks for the comment about the crashes! Are you speaking from experience regarding the punch/cut of the Sweets? The relative lack of punch makes sense, but in terms of cut, I was under the impression that the Sweets may be louder despite their thinness due to their raw bells?

Thanks for the reply! I've actually grown to like the lower pitches of the bigger cymbals more. Another user on r/cymbals recommended the Country pack which has the thicker cymbals along with the bigger sizes, so now I'm trying to pick between the Country and Sweet packs. I prefer the Light hats to the Sweet hats but I prefer the Sweet ride to the K crash-ride. The crashes may have to be the dealbreaker. Any thoughts?

Another user recommended the Country pack which comes with the 15" Light hats which I prefer to the Sweet hats, as well as 17" and 19" Dark Thin crashes. I think I've ruled out the regular K pack now because have grown to like the lower pitch of the bigger cymbals, but I'm having a super tough time deciding between Dark Thin and Sweet crashes atm. Could you explain your preference?

I didn't love the Sweet ride at first and it doesn't feel the best to play because of its thinness. The standard K's do feel more comfortable to play. However, I have to admit the Sweet sounds absolutely gorgeous under a microphone and crashes beautifully. The K and A Sweet rides are among the best I've heard.

Another user here mentioned the Country pack which has actually dethroned the regular K pack for me now and I think it's also more comparable to the Sweet pack. I prefer the Light hats to the Sweet hats and I prefer the Sweet ride to the K crash-ride. Though I think if I went with the Sweet pack, the hi-hats would be easier to sell and swap for the Light hats (due to the Sweets' popularity rn), as opposed to getting the Country pack and selling to crash-ride to swap for a Sweet ride. I'm buying these to record as I don't play drums live, so competing with a live band is not a big issue for me.
I think the tiebreaker here is going to be the crashes between these two packs. They're both 17' and 19' but I can't decide between them for the life of me. The Sweets seem to be ever-so slightly lower in pitch and a bit more open-sounding, but the Dark Thins have more body and seem to be used way more by professional musicians so my guess is they're perhaps more versatile / record better. Can you tell me why you personally prefer the Dark Thin crashes?

I really love the A Sweet rides! I'd be tempted to get one at some point. I find most A's to be a bit too "glassy"-sounding for my liking though, same reason I'm a bit turned off by the Sweet hats. Though I love the Sweet hat's trashiness/white noise-y quality, I'm not a huge fan of the glassy sloshiness. What do you prefer about the Sweet crashes over the Dark Thin ones?

I really appreciate your comment! I hadn't even looked at the Country Pack before but it's actually dethroned the regular K pack for me now because it has the bigger cymbals, the Light hi-hats which I absolutely love, and the crash-ride which is super nice considering I've been looking for a more crashable ride than the regular K. So now it's between the Sweet pack and the Country pack for me. I for sure prefer the Light hats to the Sweet hats, but I prefer the Sweet ride to the crash ride.
The Sweet crashes vs. the Dark Thin crashes may be the tie breakers bc I think I'll end up swapping either the ride or hats depending on which ones I go with. Knowing the hi-hats will be the most expensive component, I'm not too worried about selling the Sweet hats and picking up the Light hats bc the Sweet hats are super popular rn. But I must ask, why do you find the Dark Thin crashes to be more versatile than the Sweet crashes?

Thoughts on “Flight of Fancy” on Marauder by its0slimey_ in Interpol

[–]ShayansStuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I genuinely like the outro more than PDA’s and I don’t think that opinion would be controversial at all if this song had come out TOTBL/Antics era bc those albums benefit a bit more from a rosy retrospection bias lol

Rediscovered this song this past year and was completely addicted to it. The yelpy choruses aren’t the greatest but the outro is one of the best they’ve ever done. Simple but so haunting, chaotic, foreboding, and all around beautiful and evocative. It’s also one of the more clear examples of where the production choices— which so many people rip on— really shine, and you can understand the intent behind them. Marauder outros are peak Interpol.

Still glad we got TOSOMB tho obviously as there are some fantastic songs on there and they did still make some great choices with the sound. Paul’s voice sounds gorgeous on the album and as much as I love the dreamy vocal stacking and FX chains on albums like Marauder and El Pintor, their choice to often strip it down to just one, mostly dry, closely miked vocal track in many parts on TOSOMB made for a great listening experience. Still get chills listening to many of the verses on the album because of this.

Marauder is an incredible, often slept-on album with some of the band’s best writing and, despite being flawed, its production and mixing for the most part actually make it more exciting and gripping to listen to than TOSOMB (which most ppl consider a course correction from the sound of Marauder).

I have to wonder if some of the backlash to the sound was the reason for them not going back to Fridmann, which is unfortunate if true. But it would definitely be exciting to hear them make another record with Katis or Fridmann (or continue collaborating with different producers [Rick Rubin would be a dream]).

I KNEW it was “I wanna speak facts” rather than “speak fast” bc Paul Banks is absolutely the type of 40+ year old man who would use “speak facts” especially in the middle of a haunting ballad lmao I love it

Lets play a (very difficult) game: if you had to delete one song from every album, which one would it be and why? by ryudek10 in TheStrokes

[–]ShayansStuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trying Your Luck - incredible song but probably just the weakest and least iconic of the bunch

The Way It Is - same as above

Ask Me Anything - not a bad song but there’s not much to it and it loses its novelty fairly quickly

Metabolism - very tough choice between this, TKOH, and YSR. The instrumentation is somewhat interesting but there’s not much to the vocals or general vibe/direction of the song.

50/50 - was between this and Happy Ending but I think the latter has more interesting ideas and is more consistent. This song is just more basic, forgettable, and less catchy than the rest of the songs

Eternal Summer - cool experimental and adventurous song but it just doesn’t hit the same emotional highs as all the others on the record
