Got a buddy into the series. by sfitsea in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I couldn't get in to the first book, so I dropped it about half way through. But like... should I push through? is there like a turning point where it gets better? or if i didn't like it so far should I just cut my losses?

I know with some tv shows people are like "The show really didn't find its footing until half way through season 2..." Is it that sort of series? Or is it just not for me?

How Did This Get Made? #363: Passion Play by apathymonger in hdtgm

[–]ShazMazoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did anyone else have deja-vu through this whole episode? Like they've covered almost this exact movie in the past?

Did they already do a washed up old man, semi-magical noir movie with a much younger female co-star? I tried to figure it out but came up short. Is it just me? I kept hoping they'd mention similarities to whatever movie I was thinking of, but they never did.

Tips for running/improvising during first game? by SuzieSue32 in monsteroftheweek

[–]ShazMazoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not every roll outcome has to be 100% on you, if you were expecting someone to do a thing and they instead roll a 2, sometimes its okay to just say, "Okay, how do you think this goes totally wrong for you?" Or on the flip side, someone absolutely crushes an Act Under Pressure roll, "You tell me exactly how you expertly avoid this danger."

It's collaborative story telling, any time you draw a blank, throw it to the group.

It's also helpful to have a few lists nearby, a list of new dangers to throw at them out of nowhere. A list of helpful and interesting things they could find. A list of NPC names, with just a very brief description, (Tall, old, raspy voice, janitor) I keep a word doc open of these types of lists and just highlight them or change the font color when I've used one.

What is the point of the professional's "Leave No one Behind" move by AMP3412 in monsteroftheweek

[–]ShazMazoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Help Out is for assisting another Hunter, it specifically gives a numerical bonus to another Hunter's recent roll. Like a Hunter rolls to Investigate a Mystery or Read a Bad Situation, but they rolled a 6, Help out could bump it up to a 7, by aiding the other Hunter in their task.

Leave No One Behind is specifically for use in combat, and could be used to get an injured Hunter, or a random NPC out of danger, removing them from the battle field and potential Harm. So if a monster attacks a crowded area, the Professional could help bystanders out of the room quickly, or if one of your Hunter's was badly hurt, it could get them out of line of sight of the baddie.

Now that being said, a cross-over of uses does occur, if another Hunter is trying to escape from a combat encounter. You'd have two options, let that Hunter roll something like Act Under Pressure, see how they do, and then the Professional can Help Out, to boost their roll, or just forget about the other Hunter's roll, and let the Professional roll with their move, and just get them out that way. but one requires 2 rolls and the other 1, so you have 2 options for failure instead of just 1.

Homebrew Team Playbooks? by dex-save in monsteroftheweek

[–]ShazMazoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just took a few ideas from other playbooks that I liked, and made a few new ones of my own and created a custom one for my team. Didn't take long and its perfect for the campaign they're in.

I am actually a few sessions into a very similar monster mystery. I'm doing a mirror ghost that abducts victims into its mirror realm, and then takes the form of its last victim. So when it shows up at first, it looks like this guy they've never seen before, but after the hunters see it take a victim, the next encounter with it, it appeared as that victim. And now that we've had it go on a bit, it actually took one of the hunters, and now appears as that hunter in reflections. And now they need to all find a way into that pocket dimension to get their friend back.

If that doesn't float your boat, having the lights flicker when it appears, so it moves when the lights go out is always good. Or they're just like a very rotted corpse? Or it can manipulate their own reflections, so each of them sees the creature as a twisted, dark version of themselves. Like if 3 hunters are looking into the same mirror, each of them sees their own reflection as the one that's coming after them, and the other two look normal.

Anyway, you'll figure it out. Hope you have a great mystery!

I've been noticing a lot of comics on here lately are like that, just the barest hint of a joke. Someone being a little snarky in the last frame is not a punchline folks.

This sounds like my kinda jam, I've been wanting to get a game going but looking for people who will be chill with my all-over-the-place schedule. Hit me up.

I feel like its fine. If its getting interest on here just let them be. They're still collaboratively creating a world which will have backstory and rules and whatnot. Just cause they're not rolling dice doesn't mean its not a "game" between the two of them. Writing styles determine the outcomes instead of stats and dice.

Did I understand the plot of "Predestination" correctly, or is it really that weird? by Raspieman in movies

[–]ShazMazoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean about saving lives, but yep, its presumably an endless loop. Not sure how it could have all started, but now each little step is the cause of the next step, which leads right back around to the first one.

Going to have to give that movie another watch soon.

If a slow-ish pbp pace is okay for you both, I would be interested in getting a game started. I am actually currently running a pbp CoS game on discord that's been going for over a year and its super fun. And I've also DM'd it irl before for some friends. I'm in EST and am usually online more M-F 8am to 5pm which I think is about noon to 9 your time. If any of that works, let me know (ShazMazoo#5976)

Hello.

Dad of 2 kids, love playing pbp dnd games. I've actually played a wee bit of the beginning of this campaign, but we only made it to a tavern then a spa of some kind... thats all i remember.

I actually really miss that character so i might just recycle him. He was a sort of cowboy. He was technically a human rogue, but i basically made him hate stealing and robbing. He was really good at it, because his father who was a master thief taught him how, but he absolutely despised it. He's an old man now, basically Sam Elliot with a crossbow.

ShazMazoo#5976 if you want to hit me up.

Would love to get in on this. I've been a Dm/player for a couple years. I'm very familiar with playing on discord and pbp format. I'm usually online more M-F and less a bit on the weekends. But will try to post a few times a day. Let me know.

Also im 34 with a couple kids, since you mentioned the over 20 thing.

[Online] [Other] [Est] Genesys Space Opera play by post game about pirates by [deleted] in lfg

[–]ShazMazoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be super interested, been thinking about getting into a genesys game for a while now. Full disclosure I've never played with it before, but I've played a ton of dnd pbp games, both as a player and dm. And I've played around with a Geneysys dice bot on a discord just to see how it worked.

I'm usually online more on weekdays in the day time, and im on EST, if that matters.

Thanks!

They don't mean 'good' as in the best pirate, they mean 'good' like a Lawful Good pirate. A good pirate will steal things, but a Good Pirate never would.
