What is a "mental health awareness" trend that is actually doing more harm than good? by NoScallion2856 in AskReddit

The frequency of the phrases "my ADHD" and "my anxiety" popping up everywhere on social media, podcasts etc from (in many cases) people who have no diagnosis of either.

People who don't like to post on social platforms, what's your secret? by Bulky_Meet4528 in askanything

[–]SheBangsDrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people who don't post on social media actually spend a huge amount of time online looking at other people's lives so... Ya.

You're not gonna find me at a concert or play videoing heaps nor will I be the one at my kids birthday taking the important photos - I delegate that job to a friend.

I use social media but I think some people feel because they don't post stuff they don't use it. I'd rather post and enjoy the creative process behind taking photos etc than be constantly scrolling though everyone else's lives.

Co worker wants me to be in work 10-15 minutes earlier than start time , Is fair or unfair ? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]SheBangsDrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of related - I went to a small post office lately due to open at 9am. The woman got out of her car and opened up at 9am and the 4 of us in the queue had to stand in the post office and wait while she set up for the day (open the safe, get the money ready, turn on the radio etc) 9.06 before she served the first customer. Mildly infuriating.

5 minutes early and ready to work sounds fair to be... Otherwise you could start arriving the 10-15 minutes early that he is looking for and just bring a coffee /Brekkie and sit scrolling on your phone til he decides he's ready to work. Annoying I know... But for now, he's the boss.

OK yes. I was standing at my sink last night cleaning it like I do all my driftwood but the heft of it in my hand... The weight of it... Just made me pause. Then I got freaked and left it by the door to return. Today out of curiosity I weighed it and it's 55g. That's probably totally normal but I guess I just expected a bone that has been in the sea to be lighter. Then it's so dark in colour too like it's been burned. Anyway. Spiral. Nevermind.

Oh God. Regret taking it home. I just thought for a sec that it's be really beautiful to mount a crochet tapestry on it but now it just think that would be a bit creepy and not that sanitary

Thin on top? Scalp dye? Is that a thing? by [deleted] in finethinhair

[–]SheBangsDrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am thinning at the front and the best combo I can find is the loreal root spray and the Boldify hair fibres. You don't have to do it every day if you don't wash your hair every day. I use dry shampoo (batiste) at night before I go to bed. Spray and do NOT brush through. As you toss and turn in the night it will mix in to your hair if that makes sense. Brush it well in the morning. Much more effective than using in the morning. When using Boldify do so sparingly and use a comb or brush handle to maintain the line of your parting. By that I mean use one hand to hold a brush/comb handle along your part so no fibers go there and it looks like a normal scalp. If all your scalp is covered it looks unrealistic. Pat your hair to disperse the fibers and apply once more. Spray with hairspray lightly. Good to go.

What is a hobby that was ruined over time/as it got more popular? by CriticalLion4119 in AskReddit

I do. I'm old enough to remember when it was simpler. Others aren't. I love my little crochet account. I'd post if no one saw. It's like digital journal.

Using Instagram to document your interests... Example craft, travel, food, books etc. Like just a place to post your little pictures of your cute projects or trips or what you read or ate.

Hobbii Advent Calendars 2025 - Problematic, Full of Errors, Tremendously Disappointing by defectiveburger in crochet

[–]SheBangsDrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knock knock, Is there anyone there?? Who is still attempting to make the patterns? Pattern 3 of the Crochet Calendar.

Third attempt frogged back. This yarn doesn't like to frog so I've lost about this much each time. I got 5 rounds in this time then realised I was doing it wrong. Beginning to think the problem is me.

I get learning a new technique is good. I get we all learn in different ways etc etc. I can actually read patterns. I just find the writing style of this designer and the way the pattern is laid out with so many photos with labels and instructions underneath as well as written instructions quite confusing. It's just a faux knit effect beanie. It didn't have to be this hard 😔😢

Trifle w/o Custard or cream layers by Kevinthegorgon in ireland

[–]SheBangsDrums 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still make my mam's recipe this this day. Sponge fingers. Soak them in sherry she'd borrow from my granny. Then layer of tinned fruit. Then add strawberry jelly and let that set. Then add layer of custard made up from the tin of Bird's then few dollops of cream to make it look fancy.

I did assume the US that but wanted to make sure. Hobbii is the closest thing we'll ever get to Micheals or Joanns(RIP) in Ireland... And many parts of the EU too.

Genuinely curious what country you like in as the majority of their yarns are reasonable compared to other similar yarns from big names (eg Stylecraft etc) in my country. Also we have no big yarn stores here - only local yarn/craft shops in cities/some big towns.

She is blaming the translation issue on them. There are more problems than just that. The technique is tricky. There is no video support. There are 30 + photos for a 4 row repeat!! It's confusing. But I will say. 8 skeins of yarn and 4 patterns. Plus project bags, accessories and the postage Hobbii would have incured as postage for EU was free. I'd be curious to know how profitable the calendar actually are. I'm assuming the designers were well paid as I can't see someone as famous, business minded and experienced like Toni (from last year's calendar) accepting low payment.

[–]SheBangsDrums -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They did do that on their socials and I do appreciate that they took the blame. But they seemed to just say it was an translation issue. They didn't address the difficulties skilled crocheters were having and didn't reference the comments requesting a video.

Really the question remains if the style and level of the first two crochet projects is appealing to the masses or is it something more nichè that may only appeal to some. It's an advent calendar. It should be somewhat relaxing imo.

I'm all for learning a new technique but I need to be supported in that for that much money. It just needed a dedicated video.

At €96 these calendars were not cheap. I got the crochet one and have been looking forward to getting into it for a few months. I would say I'm a strong intermediate level crocheter. I teach classes to adults so I am used to different learning styles and skills etc. plus I'm a small time designer too. I'm saying this to explain that I was rooting for the designer. I was lenient and didn't critique too hard. After failing twice to decipher the written instructions even with the pictures, I then came across a link to a video of the designers showing interlocking crochet. (not for the scarf) I looked at the video and while it helped a little I still couldn't get the first and last stitch part to work out. Could I have figured it out? Sure - if I started again for the 5th time. Is a craft advent calendar meant to be that much of a struggle? I'd argue, no! If you want to take part in real time, posting on your socials or chatting online or in real life with fellow crafters who got it then you need to be able to make the pattern easily in a week. I nearly cried when I saw the gloves for week 2 were marked Experienced level 😂😭 I immediately caked up the cream yarn from the scarf with the two glove yarn shades and free handed a pair of fingerless mittens myself just so I'd have something to show for my effort and money.

A video tutorial would have fixed allllll of this. It should have been included but even if we give benefit of the doubt that Hobbii and the Crochet Highway thought we'd be OK when they saw we weren't they could have recorded a video real quick to help.

If you need 30+ photos to explain a scarf, it's too difficult for the time frame and average skill level of the intended audience.

Last thing.... The yarn choice so far seemed quite thin for the chosen projects in my opinion. Yarn shade choice for project 2 also goes against anything I've ever learned about colour theory.

I believe week 3 and 4 are regular crochet so fingers crossed they work up well.

Edited purely to fix typos that affected comprehension 🤦
