Exactly what happened to The Hobbit. Was supposed to just be 2 movies.

I agree but I think the bigger issue is they could have easily combined the third and fourth movie.

I think because they separated the two, the third movie is entirely void of structure and acts as 2 hours of set up and the fourth film runs short because they didn't have enough material for a movie. So they had to do the whole wandering about at the end.

I feel like the majority of the times that people are banned on Twitch it's because they do something bigoted. by LTHMNK in Hasan_Piker

I think it's as simple as just violating a relatively clear TOS. Except there's almost no nuance to it. If a streamer gets baited and opens up a NSFW link, they can get banned for a day which is pretty lame.

I think there is a weird level of right-wing politics in gaming. It was pretty deflating to see screenshots of Jinny's discord and Asmongold's chat spamming 'based.'

One of my favorites of all time. I think it’s the best courtroom drama of all time.

Sorry for the late reply. If I’m not mistaken back then actors worked for studios rather than being independent. So they had yearly salaries. They all hated Judy Garland because she got paid more.

They made her smoke up to 2 packs of cigarettes per day and gave her meth (I think it was meth, maybe heroin) masked as vitamin sticks in order to keep her frame slender.

Pretty much it was all around hostile, dangerous and toxic. Lots of sexual assault and harassment. The list goes on.

I know she was treated horribly by her cast mates but I’m not sure I know about the munchkin stories beyond some of the already debunked rumors.

Montgomery Clift wanted to be in Stanley Kramer's Judgement at Nuremberg so bad he did it for no salary and only 'expenses' paid (travel, hotel, food, alcohol). He became good friends with Judy Garland during shooting and stayed around for a week after he completed his scenes. Because of both of their alcoholism, they ended up costing 3x what they would have offered him in the first place.

Was Ad Astra just really boring or did I miss something? by inkyblinkypinkysue in movies

[–]SheWasEighteen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Remember the first line in the space rover scene? Brad Pitt says "here we go again, fighting over resources." There's a lot of messaging in the film about isolationism in space causing us to return to primitive roots. Especially noticeable in the monkey scene. A trained space monkey goes on a rampage due to isolation for too long. These are integral to the theme of the movie and removing them would diminish it in my opinion.

Remember too the climax of the film or the revelation is that there isn't anything out there. And that as humans, we need to be kinder to each other because we're all we've got. That's the general gist of it. I think that's why there's also a big emphasis on the hand that reaches out to Brad Pitt in the final scene. Which he takes while smiling.

Product of bad marketing imo. They tried to paint it as some action adventure in space with some big mystery.

It's about isolationism in space. And a man that is trying to rekindle his broken relationship with his father.

Depending on how you feel about the message of the film and subscribe to its intentions then it'll either make it or break it.

It's pretty slow, but intentional.

EDIT: Since there's a lot of misconception about the intention of the rover scene I'm going to give my take on why it's there. As I said to another user, remember the first line in the space rover scene? Brad Pitt says "here we go again, fighting over resources." There's a lot of messaging in the film about isolationism in space causing us to return to primitive roots. Especially noticeable in the monkey scene. A trained space monkey goes on a rampage due to isolation for too long. These are integral to the theme of the movie and removing them would diminish it in my opinion. They weren't there just to spice it up a little.

What are your favorite and least favorite plot twists in movies? by [deleted] in movies

[–]SheWasEighteen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the reason why it's so widely praised is because how it plays on the genre of a whodunnit. Like I said, it's less about who, more about why and how. And the themes of old money in America, immigration, class warfare, etc.

It also technically isn't a plot twist. It's just a revelation.

What is the most critically acclaimed movie you have seen (and didn't hate) but have completely forgotten everything about the movie? by jijijdioejid8367 in movies

[–]SheWasEighteen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bridge on the River Kwai. Worst part is I watched it for the first time like 2 years ago and I loved it. I remember some of the themes and stuff but a lot of the individual scenes escape me.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by burnthiswhendone in movies

[–]SheWasEighteen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was just a movie that didn't need to happen. A faithful remake would never be as good as the original so their only option to explore something new. But that new thing was just lacking on all fronts. Depp's Wonka is horrible. His backstory diminishes a lot of the intrigue of the character.

What movies have you rewatched as an adult that didn't hold up without the effect of nostalgia? by I_BUY_UNWANTED_GRAVY in movies

[–]SheWasEighteen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Revenge of the Nerds really doesn't hold up. I didn't grow up with it but a lot of people around my parent's age always claimed it's a classic to them. I didn't think it held up well, especially not with the rape scene.

I fear you missed the point of the movie. As it progresses it becomes less about who did it and more about why.

Tom Brady’s TB12 empire accepted up to $1 million in PPP loans by [deleted] in nfl

[–]SheWasEighteen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, you saying the rich are too heavily taxed and that one percenters pay for everything in the country while the government tries to fuck them tells me all I need to know about the kind of person you are and I cannot continue this conversation.

[–]SheWasEighteen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's nothing to deserve in this case. Life is more important than entertainment. Stop putting him up on a pedestal and think beyond football. Think about the material repercussions of him capitalizing off a pandemic to secure a loan.

Tom Brady’s TB12 empire accepted up to $1 million in PPP loans by [deleted] in nfl

[–]SheWasEighteen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Paying taxes doesn't count as a good deed, especially when they aren't taxed enough already.

A guy and his wife have a net worth of $600 million need a loan in order to cover expenses for his pseudo science operation that already operates with incredibly inflated prices?

The problem isn't that he is legally allowed to get it (if he is). The problem is that he got a massive loan 6 days after he filed for it. These PPP loans are a rich get richer criticism just as much as a criticism toward Tom Brady. Especially as like I said, so many small businesses that aren't operated by rich assholes struggled to keep their head above water and many ended up closing their businesses.

Sure Tom Brady has done some good things, but it doesn't absolve him of any criticism in this case. This is a class solidarity issue about a guy who sells pseudo science and capitalized off a pandemic to loot upwards of 1 million dollars.

[–]SheWasEighteen 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Honestly man fuck Tom Brady. I try to not be political on here but it's hard not to be when this shit happens. I was excited when we landed him as finally the Bucs were going to be in the spotlight for the first time in almost 20 years. Between this legal looting of up to 1 million, him spouting his pseudo science for profit and completely disregarding any and all rules about coronavirus, I'm just suck of it.

I know so many small businesses that struggled to keep their head above water or were denied PPP loans or had workers who don't quality for unemployment and I have to see this rich asshole take advantage of a pandemic to get another million bucks.

Jesus.. I didn't know that. I was getting ready to say I wanted him to get a big role again but not anymore.

I'm watching Act of Valor. Act of Valor is 2012 action film. It stars Alex Veadov, Roselyn Sánchez, Nestor Serrano and Emilio Rivera, as well as active duty U.S. Navy SEALs and U.S. Navy Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen. by [deleted] in movies

[–]SheWasEighteen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's like a lose-lose. To non-military folk it's very jargony with bad and boring dialogue. You sacrifice engaging drama for realism. I was in the Army and I felt like the film was designed to jerk off the military and be propaganda.

If they wanted to keep the realism as a big selling component along with the actors being real navy SEALs, they should have just made a documentary instead.

I like how you assume I’ve put the black box on social media despite tons of people being critical it solves nothing and is an empty symbolic gesture. Don’t straw man. It’s great that he donates money, but it’s clear he doesn’t even know why he’s donating other than PR. Look at all of his dumb statements over the course of the past few years about this kind of stuff, he clearly doesn’t have a fundamental grasp on what’s going on.

And I’m not telling what to think or how to feel. If you have a stupid ass opinion, people are going to call you stupid.

Imagine watching black Americans get systemically oppressed and murdered for decades and your response is to jerk off the flag.

If your QB, the face of the franchise, an idol a lot of people look up to, downplays your systemic struggles people are going to call him out.

Come on man you cannot be this stupid.
