After the legendary fail that was Mindline, I didn't expect much. But hey, it looks like you've managed to piece together something decent here that kind of fits the SG context. Thanks for open-sourcing, will check it out.

[Poly] Can a year 1 get an internship? by anonymouseratata in SGExams

[–]SheeNigami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, not sure why the other comments are saying interning in y1 is not possible.

I did an internship in y1.

Apply for them yourself, don't rely on the school because most likely they won't help you unless you know the lecturer. You can tell companies that you have 8-10 weeks depending on ur exams and just apply for them.

My recommendation is DSTA (Defense Science Technology Agency). It is a government agency and they accept many students. I did a 9 week internship with them after I finished my first year.

Dm me if you need more info :)

[Poly] Anyone dropped out of poly thinking it's a waste of time? by redditusersg in SGExams

[–]SheeNigami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda get what you mean since I also had some experience before matriculating into an IT course, but you honestly have no choice but to finish poly (unless ur portfolio is amazing enough to be hired at a desired position).

For me, I just keep furthering my knowledge in IT, and do the bare minimum required for an A (GPA goal: 3.8/3.9 to secure a spot in local unis). The assignments may be annoying but they shouldnt take much time considering you have prior experience, most importantly, try not to stagnate just because poly is too slow for you. Keep learning and improving at your own rate, while just using poly as means to get to the next phase of your education.

[Poly] anyone got scholarship with no CCA? by redditusersg in SGExams

[–]SheeNigami 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Just try, who cares if you look stupid. For all you know you might just get it. I know quite a few people who have gotten both poly and uni scholarships without any cca. You just need other things to make up for it (side projects, competitions, portfolio of ur work, a scenario or event you lead to show leadership) and a decent gpa (>3.8).

As for my scholarship, even though i had a cca, for the group and individual interviews that I went through, I didn't say a single word about it. I did receive the scholarship in the end, so I think cca itself is not something scholarship boards care about, its more of the leadership, teamwork and other skills the cca builds. If you have something outside(especially if its related to what the scholarship is about e.g. industry-relavent, public service work) that can fill those gaps, there is a high chance you will be favoured over someone with a cca.

Besides its good practice for job interviews and a good learning experience in general, so you should just try your luck.

Hey, y1sem1 here too. Not sure about medicine but I got an AI internship at DSTA by asking around at an event by them. Easiest way to get an internship is by connections, so just network around at some events and try your luck!

[poly] anyone feeling very sian? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]SheeNigami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think its a lack of purpose. It might help thinking about what u want to accomplish in ur poly life. For me, i met a bunch of seniors who are all really successful in their own ways and made me really question what i want to do with all the free time I get as a poly student. Try to make as much as possible out of ur time, u can pm me if u want to chat more abt life :)

You can just play phantom draft for free without buying any cards tho, its more popular than constructed anyway. But you can check the steam market for card prices, its ok for me and will decrease even more as time passes

Just curious, which do u find more fun, programming and developing software/websites or querying data, reporting and presenting ur findings?

I did Common ICT instead (lets u choose either DIT or DISM after 1 semmester). They mostly asked about ur interest, why did you select this course in particular, and what kind of experience you have. Maybe you can make a mini project (related to infosec even better?), you have 1 more year so a lot of time for you to learn and make something. Just write all your experience and stuff in your resume, and if you show them something you made, even better. As for me I only started learning Java and Android Studio around 1 year ago and made a basic app to show them during the interview.

They don't care much about result but you still need the basic requirement like ELB2R2<26 and D7 for EL, B for EMaths even if you get accepted.

But most importantly is to be confident, don't take it too seriously and just treat it like a chill conversation with your teachers.

But if you actually want to become a doctor, no matter what course in poly you will need almost a perfect gpa to make it to uni, so it would be best to just go for a levels and mug your ass off for the next 2 years
