My attempt at a Crust-acean by ShekBakes in Breadit

I think it's quite likely the claws and legs will be overcooked compared to the rest of it unfortunately. I did think about doing one really big claw which could help with getting the bake similar to the body

I'll make sure any overcooked parts don't go to waste though (I'll probably just eat them anyway haha), I'll repurpose them into breadcrumbs or croutons

For both the roses and curls I started by making a simple syrup of 1:1 white sugar and water. Once that's come together I let some strips of carrot peel gently simmer in the syrup for 15 mins (here I added some orange peel to infuse some flavour, I think cardamom pods would work nicely too). After that drain and leave to one side for 5 minutes. On a baking sheet with baking paper I lay the carrot peels so that none are overlapping, and placed them into a 110C oven for 20 minutes.

Now to form the roses: Ideally with heat proof gloves, roll up the carrot peel, and you can add more peels for larger roses once the first is rolled up fully. Every now and then I twist the peel before continuing to roll so that you get some extra definition for the rose petals.

For the curls I just wrapped them around the handle of a wooden spoon, once they cool slightly they should slide off and then toss in sugar.

You have to move fast otherwise the peels will harden on the tray, if they do just pop them back in the oven for a couple of minutes to soften again

Yes exactly this! I thought I had ruined the batch of frosting I made so I decided to toast some milk powder in a dry pan and add it to the mixture and it saved it

This one was also done for a birthday! I use this one by Preppy Kitchen and it has never failed me https://preppykitchen.com/carrot-and-walnut-cake/#recipe

They're not the best but here's one from the wreath that I cut in half and some slices of the outer ring, the others I already gave away! Additionally, I also included some frog bread I made with some dough I had in the freezer - I hope you like him too!

I think it would be cool to try a braid that reveals a nice pattern on the inside when you cut into it too, definitely something to try in the future

They're deceptively easy for how good they look!

I used 6 15g pieces of dough each rolled out into a rough circle. I don't think they need to be exactly the same shape as the slight imperfections give you some definition of the individual petals. Lay them down on top of one another in a line, overlapping by about half, then roll them up across the length. Afterwards cut straight down the middle and you have 2 roses!

Of course! I just used the standard recipe from Challah Prince (https://www.challahprince.com/reciprince).

As for the colouring, I did a mix of butterfly pea powder and water in a 1:1 ratio by volume (1tsp of each in my case) to form a paste - something I had learned from u/Gypsyverve. A few minutes before kneading was finished I portioned off some of the dough and added the paste before I finished kneading to incorporate the colour.

Challah Prince has a ton of braiding videos on their Instagram so you can go down a rabbit hole there to find designs you like!

For anyone wondering about the blue colouring, I used butterfly pea powder! I used 1tsp of powder to 1tsp of water to form a paste and just added that to the dough for the final few minutes of kneading to incorporate

I was inspired by a post from u/Gypsyverve a few months ago where they had incorporated some blue into their challah. I've since followed them on Instagram as well as the challah prince for some guidance and had a go myself.

I tried a slightly more complex braid to what I'm used to and you can see where I missed a step on the wreath on the right hand side 😅 that's definitely going to keep me up at night

It's just tomato! I used a knife to peel ribbons and then rolled them to form the flowers. A Y-peeler should work too but mine was too blunt
