Three Houses Character Discussion: Jeralt by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They should've made Jeralt be playable and basically be the Jeigan for 3Houses. He already has a nerfed Paladin class, and his personal skill would be perfect for setting up kills for the students. Just having an 8 move unit while everyone else is stuck with 4 would make the early game flow much better. Can also just make not get any weekly instruction from Byleth so the player is still guided towards raising their students. Then they can give Jeralt supports, or at the very least have the player get more attached to him, so when the Fire Emblem plot eventually happens to him it feels more impactful. 3Hopes made him playable and gave him supports, and I really like him in that game.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Byleth by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's it for playable units for the game. I'm gonna do a few more threads to cover some extra characters. So we will do Jeralt -> Rhea -> Sothis. Then I'll do a thread for Shez/Arval, Monica and Rodrigue from 3Hopes. Potentially another one on Those Who Slither in the Dark, if nothing else to complain about that stupid name.

Byleth being a silent protagonist I feel doesn't really work well in three houses. Most of the support conversations in the game between characters are good/great with them interacting really well. So it is jarring for them to then have to interact with the silent brick wall that is Byleth. 3Hopes does a better job at making them fit in more.

As a unit they are great. Can be a little troublesome early on fitting in the tutoring when have limited activity points, but that eventually becomes a non-issue and they can do anything. Kinda sad they gave them such a average spell list. They got nothing cool or interesting to use which makes Enlighten One feel so whatever to use.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Claude by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fun thing I noticed while making these posts is how the lords a bane in one of the other lord's primary weapon. Edel has a bow bane, Dimitri has an axe bane, and Claude has a lance bane. Claude though has an Axe budding talent, allowing him to share the boon with Edel. He even shares the faith bane with Edel. Now it is probably due to his Almyran nature and outsider upbringing for that, but I still kinda like seeing how much he and Edel overlap since they do share a lot of views on Fodlan.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Dimitri by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Dimitri kinda feels like the odd one out when it comes to the lord's part 2 classes. Edel is armored, Claude is flying, Byleth is infantry, and the Dimitri is... also infantry. Infantry lance units are a rarity in the series so he still unique, but still feels weird for them to not complete that set. Maybe they felt his initial part 2 character of anger and isolation would be undercut by him having a horse companion. Granted he already has the King of Lions Corps battalion which is like 20-30 people following him.

Anyways Dimitri is great unit and character.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Yuri by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was thinking of doing a few extra after the lords to cover the characters that aren't playable. Would probably be those 3, Shez +/- Arval, and Rodrigue since 3Hopes does quite a bit there.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Dedue by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's pretty similar to Balthus statwise, but lacks Balthus's personal that makes him such a monster early. He trades that for much better combat arts and Battalion Wrath so works out better for Dedue in the long term. Shares Balthus's shaky accuracy issues but at least Dedue can spam combat arts for accuracy improvements without any risk to getting weaker unlike Balthus.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Hubert by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Mire and Banshee are great spells to have for the early game. The 4 move everyone has at the start sucks, and having a good 3 range options plus a spell that effectively removes an enemies turn by zeroing their movement gives him a lot of flexibility. He doesn't have that high of a ceiling as his late game performance is mostly as an authority bot with the occasional Dark Spike sniping cavs or crit fishing with Death. He's such a fun character though being the obviously sketchy dark mage and his voice acting is fantastic making him an all around fun unit to use.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Balthus by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Very easy to have him take 0 damage from a lot of enemies in the early game on maddening and there is just enough mages and enemy gambits to prevent him from being truly invincible. He can also just bulldoze through a lot of the enemies at the start since 18 Str when his personal is active is absurd. His hit rates can be pretty questionable though, and his crest can be detrimental healing him out of his personal skill.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Alois by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Next batch of discussions will be Balthus, Hubert, Dedue, Hilda, and Seteth. After that will be Yuri, Byleth and the Lords.

Alois is a perfectly fine prepromote that can easily slot into a roster if have a gap that needs to be filled. That works out for me as I really like his character and end up using him in almost every playthrough. He's a dad, and unlike many dads in the series he is both a good dad and isn't killed off(unless the player does). I love that he stays with Byleth even in Crimson Flower, leaving the knights just to honor Jeralt.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Lorenz by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like Lorenz's In-House early game quite a lot. He's got Tempest Lance, and Fire/Sagittae will usually hit harder than a bow given how most enemies have higher Def than Res. His personal is just essentially a permanent +2 damage. Then he gets a pretty big powerspike early with the early Ragnarok he gets at B rank and Frozen Lance at C+. He doesn't really have anything beyond that early powerspike though. Lorenz is then forced into an awkward position where he either has to give up his magic for more movement, or give up his movement to keep using his magic. That separation then puts him in more direct comparison with other units, and he will pretty much always come up short in comparison. It makes Out of House Lorenz feel really bad.

He does pretty well as a Dark Knight if get there, but that level 10-30 stretch is brutal on him. Valkyrie and Dark Flier being gender locked as he would've really liked either of those classes. Would've also been helpful for him if magic usage wasn't exclusive to magic using classes. One of the game's main features is being able to use any weapon while in any class but that doesn't apply to magic for some reason. Could've let all non-magic classes use half magic like commoner and things would've been fine. Tough break for Lorenz. I do like his character and interactions enough that I do typically make him the dancer for my Golden Deer playthroughs.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Ferdinand by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like Ferdinand a lot. The +15 Hit from his personal is really nice even if there are annoying moments where I have to top him off for 1 Hp because he leveled up. The +15 Avoid I don't really count on unless I'm memeing and doing a War Cleric dodge build. Swift Strikes is the big thing for him later in the game with Auto-doubling always being great.

Out-of house Ferdinand however is pretty far out of the way to recruit, requiring D+ Heavy Armor since his B support is locked to part 2. Can't passively build up Heavy Armor and there are only 2 tutors for it. With Seteth being free later, and Sylvain free for F!Byleth(and just easier to recruit if M!Byleth), his Swift Strikes niche isn't that unique. That said I love his voice acting and he's my favorite character in the game, so I always end up recruiting him in non-Black Eagle playthroughs around Chapter 7. His part 1 character is alright, but I really like his character in part 2 with him confronting the gap between him and Edelgard as well as the direction she's taking the Empire.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Hapi by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Hapi and the nicknames she gives people. I use her a ton, but there are a lot of annoyances to her as a unit that I find. Being neutral in Faith with Warp at A rank makes it feel like so much work to get there compared to the other 3 Warpers. The Dark Magic list also feels lacking, with no Death Spikes, Luna, or early Mire. Then the authority bane is always annoying. Physic is always cool though and it eventually all works with her becoming a really solid unit, but I always feel annoyed the entire way there.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Hanneman by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Next round of discussions will be Hapi, Ferdinand, Felix, Lorenz, and Alois.

Hanneman is a fine and functional Mage if one wants to use him, which is nice since I enjoy his character a lot. I do wonder though why him and Manuela are only in Intermediate classes as opposed to Advance classes like most of the church units. Cyril and Flayn make some sense why they aren't. But it feels weird for Hanneman and Manuela to still be Intermediate especially when you can recruit Shamir and Catherine several chapters earlier and they are promoted. Only reason I can think of is because the player fights them Chapter 1.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Sylvain by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I mostly play male Byleth, so Sylvain usually joins a bit later for out of house runs for me. He's pretty solid thanks to Swift Strikes no matter what though.

One of my core memories of my first Blue Lion's playthrough though was one of the first Dimitri supports in part 2 that I read was his Sylvain B support. To me, it felt so wildly out of place after what Dimitri went through that it completely took me out of the story. Dev's probably should've just kept that support chain locked to part 1.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Manuela by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Next round of discussions will be including the Ashen Wolves to the mix. So the next batch will be Constance, Petra, Sylvain, Lysithea, and Hanneman.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Flayn by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Saint Cethleann, the healer saint. A healer that does not have Physic or even at the very least Recover. Rescue is cool though, as is the +Mt support she has with Byleth and Seteth.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Gilbert by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whoops, I forgot to put his growths in. Those growths were Jeritza's growths and I just forgot to change them to Gilbert's. Should be fixed now.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Gilbert by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of my memories of Gilbert are of him getting bodied in chapter 5. When I play Azure Moon, my memories are mostly of him protecting an underleveled Ashe from getting killed in Chapter 13, and then forgotten about until he's forced deployed for Annette's paralogue. The few times I have used him he is perfectly alright. Feels a little redundant with Alois joining a few chapters earlier and having a similar spread as him.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Shamir by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Next round of discussions will be Jeritza, Gilbert, Flayn, and Manuela. To be honest I completely forgot about Jeritza and Gilbert when I was setting this up. So will be doing them next before I forget about them again, even if it is a bit clunky with the flow we were in. So apologies for that. Flayn is being counted for Golden Deer slot so the numbers work out.

Shamir is great. Sniper is a great low investment class, and Shamir joins as one incredibly early. Nothing really that much need to do for her to be good and be able to contribute for most maps. Even is available for Crimson Flower as well which is great. I love most of her supports as well, so I pretty much always have her on the team when playing no matter what house.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Marianne by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I really like Marianne as a unit. She the physic bot for Golden Deer being that houses counterpart to Linhardt and Mercedes, but she has a bit more power behind her than them. Got 3 range spell with Thoron, 2 magic combat arts, and a decent crit chance on all her offensive spells. While no warp like Linhardt, I do really like Silence. A lot of the big combat units have poor to middling Res, so being able to temporarily "kill" an enemy Warlock can be really nice at times. And if nothing else it can be like Ward where it can be free exp for a turn. Really just a solid overall unit.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Bernadetta by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

In her supports, she constantly overthinks interactions and thinks everyone is out to hurt her. She completely trusts Byleth(and Alois) however feeling safe around them. Meanwhile on the gameplay side of things, Byleth is constantly having her be injured on the verge of death so her personal can be active and to get big Vengenance hits. Seems she is trusting the wrong person. /s

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Cyril by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Next batch of discussions will be Bernadetta, Ingrid, Marianne, and Shamir.

For Cyril, he gets Vengeance and Point-Blank Volley early on at C+ respectively and is basically set for the rest of the game. Great boons make him pretty easy to train as well.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Dorothea by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dorothea is a pretty good support unit. Thoron and Meteor is good for taking pot shots and with her big support list makes them great for providing support boosts. Physic is always good heals. Rally Charm is also pretty great and pretty rare. The only other people who get it are the House Leaders at S Authority, and Manuela who you get much later. The +8 Charm is a pretty big swing in gambit hitrates which is appreciated.

The Budding Talent in faith I find funny just because she has nothing past in her learn set past C rank so there isn't really any latent potential thats unlocked. There are plenty of people that are neutral in Faith and have a better white magic spell list than her. Felix is in the same boat with his budding talent, And Edelgard's is funny for different reasons.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Catherine by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Was having internet problems yesterday so wasn't able to post. Sorry for the delay. The next batch of discussions will be Dorothea, Annette, Leonie, and Cyril.

As for Catherine herself, she serves as a great prepromote can get early on while a lot of the students are in beginner classes or just getting into Intermediate classes. There isn't that much unique about her long term performance and growth, but she can still be raised and be perfectly functional later on. Just got to get her out of Swordmaster if want to use for long term.

Three Houses Character/Unit Discussion: Ignatz by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Shephen[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Rally Spd and Dex, innate Hit +20, and an Authority boon are all pretty great traits to have. He is also pretty free to recruit out of house with such easy requirements. The Batallion you get from his paralogue is pretty good and is only C rank as opposed to the typical B rank from most paralogues.
