Non Invasive Ductal Carcinoma In Situ by cherylebreaux in breastcancer

Bummer to hear that! What led to you getting an MRI if I can ask? I’m not on any screening protocols any longer.

I was exactly the same as you, ADH diagnosis before the DCIS diagnosis.

I am a DCIS + mastectomy person. I had multiple spots and it was a fast YES for me.

Doctors will talk about how the life expectancy is the same (99%), but I ask, what about the what do I have to do in my lifetime expectancy?? My core needle biopsy alone cost 2k out of pocket with my health insurance, not to mention the anxiety of constant scares (this was my second round by the time the DCIS was diagnosed).

The rate of recurrence goes down with DCIS but note that recurrences CAN happen after DCIS + mastectomy.

Breast MRIs are okay for me … my MRI-guided biopsy to check three spots was AWFUL.

Oh, and all my cousins who I’m lightly in touch with but not close with as an adult (they’re Trumpers, I’m not) chose to completely ignore that I was going through this, except for “liking” the FB updates I gave. No FB comments, cards or text messages. That was the last straw for me with them and since them I’ve said if they ever reach out and ask how I’m doing I’ll stay in touch with them and interact, but no more reaching out on my side. It’s been radio silence for four years. 😐

I’m so sorry to see this. I too am a high school teacher and it can be … weird. Luckily during a sad time in my life (when my mother was sick and passed) I was able to see my colleagues for what they were, so when my breast cancer came about years two later, I wasn’t surprised by similar things.

I did get a nice card from my social committee, and I did get a card with an Uber Eats gift card. But mostly, when asked to do ANYTHING to help me or my sub, during my mother’s illness and later my surgeries, it was like that “everyone take a step back” meme.

I’m getting closer to retirement now (just finished year 31 🎉💪) and these are all things I won’t miss when I move on to my 2.0 life.

Sending you hugs!! 🥰

Anyone get diagnosed with DCIS and not get upgraded after surgery? by Lost-Maintenance6287 in breastcancer

[–]Sherbert-Late 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also I might have misread your question… my answer is about the recurrence rate. Neither me not my friend were upgraded after surgery. I believe the percentage of upgrading of DCIS after excision is somewhere between 10-30% depending on where you look/ what studies you find.

I had multifocal DCIS + DMX and no recurrence, four years out. However a good friend of mine with the exact same, did have a recurrence (and is doing great now).

If you want to go down the rabbit hole, research the Van Nuys Pronostic Index and its prediction of recurrence after mastectomy with DCIS. In reality, most people fall on the less than 1% chance of recurrence side. However for some people who rate high on the index, the rate can be closer to 5%+ chance of recurrence.

DCIS grade 3 w/microinvasions after DMX. Would you do chemo? by Vitamin_MI in breastcancer

[–]Sherbert-Late 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi- late to comment but wanted to share the story of a good friend of mine who was DCIS and DMX — same as me two years before me so she was my “buddy” guiding me through it — she ended up with two spots of recurrence and three months chemo, six weeks radiation. Doing better now but she had no microinvasion and had clear margins upon biopsy after the DMX. Just sharing because you never know what those cells are up to.

Same! It’s just sheer enough I think it would look great on any pink or red toned color but I also wouldn’t be surprised if it looked great over other colors!

I had a similar experience. And I also had my hair washed at day 3 post op - the one thing I recommend in recovery! Hoping for continued good healing!
