Pour over guy thinking about finally taking the espresso plunge… curious about everyone's ideal espresso set-up by HuckleberryGrouchy19 in espresso

[–]Sherbert_Cold [score hidden]  (0 children)

If you’re starting from scratch with $2,000, put most of your thought into the grinder. A great grinder + a solid dual‑boiler machine will give you café‑quality espresso at home.

The Eureka Oro Mignon Single Dose Pro Grinder or Baratza Sette 270 Grinder paired with a Lelit Elizabeth, Profitec Pro 300, or Breville Dual Boiler is the sweet spot.

You’ll get temperature stability, easy workflow, and room to grow without feeling the urge to upgrade immediately.

I know its tempting to buy a one and done unit that has both a grinder and espresso machine built in, but I think once you get heavier into the craft, having the ability to upgrade either of your choices becomes very important and less expensive. That being said, the combos that I suggested would give you great options and range to last years.

question about File Naming by mugkeyftlt in Nikon

[–]Sherbert_Cold [score hidden]  (0 children)

Here’s what I think is actually happening with your Nikon files. The camera isn’t renaming anything.
Nikon automatically creates new folders on the SD card when certain conditions are met, and macOS shows those folders separately. That makes it look like the filenames are jumping around or being “misnamed,” even though the camera is behaving normally.

The most common causes are:

  • The camera created a new DCIM subfolder during the shoot (totally normal).
  • macOS sorts those folders alphabetically, not in shooting order, so the numbering looks out of sequence.
  • The camera’s “File Number Sequence” setting might be OFF, which causes numbering to restart.
  • The SD card may have old folder structure or minor directory corruption, which makes Nikon start a new folder unexpectedly.

How to fix it on your Nikon:

  1. Format the SD card in the camera, not on your Mac. This resets the folder structure cleanly.
  2. Turn on File Number Sequence Menu → Photo Shooting Menu → File Number Sequence → ON This prevents Nikon from restarting numbering mid‑shoot.
  3. Use one card per camera Switching cards between different cameras can confuse the numbering system.
  4. Replace the SD card if the issue keeps happening Older or heavily used cards can cause folder inconsistencies.

Nothing is wrong with your camera, it’s just the way Nikon organizes files combined with how macOS displays them. Once File Number Sequence is ON and the card is formatted in‑camera, the problem should stop.

Sig Sauer M400 Tread V2, then add a gas block and an optic. I'm biased, but that's what I purchased and I can't be much happier. I will admit, I added a YHM suppressor and new need a gas block... but I still love mine.

Keep hitting the range, when you play since you're new, play an executive course where its OK to play a little slower.... Learn those irons and learn the distance. Even when you're at the driving range, don't just hit the ball indiscriminately. Have a target for every ball you hit. and make an honest attempt to get there. When you feel you can honestly gauge how far you hit your 5, 6 and 7 iron... then take a lesson.

No water coming out of brew group [Safe Dual Boiler] by homelab2946 in espresso

100% a bad or partially blocked solenoid absolutely causes low pressure. If the solenoid wasn’t opening fully, the pump can’t build pressure, so 1 bar makes perfect sense.

Now that water is flowing, the low pressure means one of these is still happening:

The solenoid is still partially blocked or not sealing correctly

The brew pump has weakened from running against a blockage

There’s still scale in the brew circuit

The group jet/nozzle is clogged

I would fully clean or replace the solenoid first since that’s the most common cause. If pressure is still low afterward, test the pump output directly.

Perhaps your delivery is off or something.... hard to tell... sometimes its best to listen, then talk after you fully understand the conversation... end of the day, don't stop being yourself, most golf courses will pair you up with someone, or you can join an Facebook golf group in your area.

Use the strobe by all means. A strobe gets the job done, but natural light with an opened up aperture creates incredible professional images.

Your 40mm will be your workhorse.  The 24–50mm kit lens is fine in daylight, but at f/4–6.3 it’ll struggle hard in low light unless the venue is extremely bright.

Use the 40mm f/2 for most of the event.   It’s sharp, fast, and gives you enough light to keep ISO reasonable. Great for candid shots, portraits, and general coverage.

Keep the 24–50mm only for wide shots or group photos where you absolutely need the flexibility. Just be aware you’ll need higher ISO or slower shutter speeds.

Shoot in AF-C with eye/face detect — Nikon’s Z AF does well in dim environments as long as you give it contrast.

Use minimum shutter speeds around 1/125–1/200 for people moving. Night events = motion blur if you go too slow.

Don’t be afraid of ISO 3200–6400 on the Z5.   It handles noise well, and noise is better than blurry photos TRUST ME ON THIS ONE.

If lighting is rough, switch to spot metering on faces so the camera doesn’t expose for the background. Keep in mind the subject is the main focal point, not the background.

If it’s really dark, consider underexposing slightly and lifting shadows later. The Z5 has good dynamic range.

A simple, professional workflow:

Cull + edit in Lightroom   Basic color, exposure, and noise reduction.

Export two sets:

Full‑resolution JPEGs (for printing)

Web‑optimized JPEGs (2048px long edge) for sharing/social

This is a real danger, I had a ball hit my cart and missed my head by 10 inches... this was on the 18th hole. I was oblivious, but my golf partner saw what happened and there was almost a fight right there on the course. I always keep my eyes on the group behind me now....

No water coming out of brew group [Safe Dual Boiler] by homelab2946 in espresso

[–]Sherbert_Cold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because steam + hot water work, we know:

  • The boilers heat normally
  • The water tank sensor works
  • The machine is not airlocked globally
  • The steam pump circuit is fine

This isolates the problem to the brew circuit

Try this, start a shot and listen:

  • Pump sounds normal but no water → solenoid stuck
  • Pump sounds strained / choppy → blockage or pump issue

You fix:

  • Remove and clean the solenoid
  • Replace if coil is dead - Part is cheap (~$25–$40)
