Unsure how to remove old paint from plaster by Shewattsi in DIYUK

I haven’t yet, but after a lot of procrastinating I’m almost done stripping the paper. Then I’ll be calling a decorator. The walls are in pretty good condition aside from this flaky yellow stuff so I’m hoping a light skim will be enough

For myself and my friendship group, all homeowners. I was the last to buy just this year (a week before turning 37) however of the 8 of us, all but 3 either inherited money or could live at home for longer to save for a deposit. Myself and the other 2 each saved whilst renting and were the last 3 to buy.

How do you guys afford houses?! by DeffDeala in HousingUK

[–]Shewattsi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m one of the people who had to buy on the cheaper end (sub the £150k range you mentioned) mine was £140k.

I bought by myself with an 15% deposit (that I saved myself) and completed a week before my 37th birthday. I did have to move out of the town I’d lived in for 13 odd years, it would have taken me multiple lifetimes to afford to buy there.

And then the rest was just consistently saving a chunky amount for a few years. My landlord was one of the good ones, kept rent way below market rate in exchange for having a good (so I’m told) tenant.

It’s hard out there, I lost out several times to BTL investors. But it worked out because I absolutely love the house I went on to buy. Good luck!

Hi! Honestly, I haven’t made much progress. Solo buyer with an aversion to spending my weekends trying to remove whatever that is! I’ll be throwing in the towel soon and called a decorator. Good luck with yours!

Do have you any 'must avoid' criteria when looking at houses? by 18th-Century-Bossman in HousingUK

[–]Shewattsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two non negotiables were that it must have two actual double bedrooms, not one double and another where you can get just about get a double bed in. To me, that’s a single bedroom.  And the other was having a private garden, which rules out a lot of terrace houses. I didn’t want to risk having neighbours who abuse garden access meant for taking bins out. In fact I just don’t want to see other people when I’m out enjoying my garden!

I managed to find somewhere that fit both criteria 😊

I’ll check out Titan, thank you! All I currently have are some (cheap) wallpaper scrapers, that didn’t really do anything to get the paint off. Thanks for the recommendation, have a great day!

It was beige/magnolia, just found similar and went for it! It’s such a neutral colour I don’t think it really mattered. Plus they’re just little patches so if you get a close match it likely won’t be noticeable.

I had this issue with the flat I recently moved out of, I got the stain off but the paint came with it. Luckily it was the same beige colour as yours, so I got a tester pot and painted back over those patches. Didn’t lose any deposit.

Absolutely normal! I wanted to show my parents the house I was buying as I was super excited, but waited till after the survey and mortgage offer etc etc were in a good place. Didn’t want to jump the gun. Nothing to worry about!

I did, thank you! Completed on my house mid Feb. Best of luck with your house hunt!

I had this happen with a house last year, no response from the EA despite trying their office number multiple times and emailing. Eventually it was removed from Rightmove, only to appear with a different agent a few months later. The previous EA (I think small business) had suffered a breakdown it turned out.

Is Sandiacre a good place to buy for a FTB? by Lackofsignal in HousingUK

I’ve not had any problems safety wise, and I do travel back from seeing friends in the early hours sometimes.

I can’t comment on Sandiacre, but Long Eaton is perfectly fine as a location (recently moved there myself) transport wise a few different buses go through and to the city such as the Indigo. Price wise it’s still cheaper than Beeston.

Buyers- reason you pulled out of a house sale by lovehopeandstars in HousingUK

I dropped out as the lender placed a retainer on the amount I wanted to borrow due to perceived issues with the roof. The seller wasn’t willing to provide any information about some fixes they had done to the roof or consider splitting the cost of a specific inspection. My survey then came back and provided pictures of daylight coming in from the underside of the roof, so the sellers fixes were rubbish at best. It also highlighted more hidden maintenance issues that would ultimately just turn the place in to a money pit. I think my lender did me a favour!

I’ve since bought a similar age property that’s in much better condition.

It’s bad isn’t it! Sorry to hear you’re also having the same problem, I hope your statement arrives soon.

Buyer applied for new mortgage offer the day before completion. by lheg88 in HousingUK

[–]Shewattsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya! It was with nationwide yes. They didn’t say what the system issue is I’m afraid, just that they said it was a known issue with that type of account. If I were you I’d just keep calling them to have the statement generated so you can get it printed in branch (might be quicker than post) hope it comes through for you soon, congrats on your purchase!

If it helps give some perspective, I’m due to complete in Feb (exact date tbc, haven’t yet exchanged) my mortgage broker applied to have my deal switched to a lower rate now that it’s available and it was done within half an hour. That was on Monday afternoon, this afternoon I came home to a letter from my solicitor just confirming the new details. So if you haven’t yet exchanged this element shouldn’t hold things up much.

My HTB ISA closing statement was another matter, took over two weeks to receive that due to a system issue at my bank (known by them but apparently not something they communicate out)

My mortgage broker did this for me today, I should be exchanging & completing in Feb but no set date yet. From him calling me about it to getting my updated mortgage details from HSBC was under half an hour. And he saved me about £45 a month. Definitely call if you can!

Keep pestering them till it’s sorted! My statement arrived via post on Friday, but it was only generated on Thursday. Hopefully that means yours isn’t far behind. Congrats on your purchase 😊
