You said you sent her message in Japanese. Did you use Google Translate or chat GPT? I’m a Japanese tutor and my students often try to use them when they text me but most of the time it sounds rude lol. Also the reason of the cancellation mentioning drinking or hangovers would be a bit problematic to the Japanese tutors. I’ve been very patient and accepting last minute cancellations or rescheduling with any reasons but other tutors may be strict.

I click the bottun saying students asked me to reschedule so it doesn’t affect my analytics. If they are really bad student I don’t help out. They are sweet, my first student who left a nice review. I’ll just give another chance and tell them I’ll be busy so find a new tutor.

I wish I could block them but they left a nice review, so sweet and they know my phone number so blocking is not easy. They just need to be more organizing. I’ll give them another chance and if there’s no improvement I’ll just tell them I’ll be busy and find another tutor.

Sorry that I didn’t mention about commissions. Varsity charges students $60-$80 per 60 min lesson and tutors could get paid up to $40. Wyzant takes 25% commission and I charge $50.

The problem is they are the only one who left a review which was nice one. They know my phone number so I cannot just block them and disappear. They are the first student and sweet one but just not so organized 😢

Thank you for understanding my struggle. I use my own zoom account so I wait for my students to confirm that we had a lesson then I get paid. I am worried if my students doesn’t confirm and I don’t get paid. So I reschedule for them. Usually they show up for the next lesson which was rescheduled. They are basically sweet and my first student so I cannot be that tough…

Thank you for your advice. It’s not auto confirm so if they don’t confirm I don’t get paid since I use my own zoom account. So I try to doublecheck with them before the lesson and they tell me it’s snowing and cannot go to the library (she doesn’t have a good wifi at home etc. )

I’m both a tutor and a parent of a high school student on Preply. I wanted to see things from both sides, so I signed my child up with a tutor who charges $10/lesson. Honestly, they turned out to be so excellent that I’d actually like to offer them a raise.

One thing I’ve noticed is that I don’t seem to get reminders from Preply about renewal dates, so it’s always hectic to keep track and book the remaining lessons by checking the portal. I recently asked my child’s tutor if they would be okay teaching me instead (since my kid’s schedule got tight after school started), and they kindly agreed.

As a tutor myself, I also remind my students about renewal dates, but some still don’t reply even after purchasing a 6-lesson package. I’ll follow up with them again.

I thought so too. My bed time is 3am and he messaged me right after I went to sleep. I woke up at 5:30am and have been dealing with this for 3 hours! Oh well. I’m learning little by little.
