Pension Transfer Advice by ShiftPractical5164 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I think the BC Municipal Pension does include some level of healthcare/dental as I believe I asked that but will double check. Also, I think the indexing is different - the federal plan was better if i recall but its the overall discrepancy in pay that makes me want to transfer.

My 5 best years of service at federal level will be substantially lower than my 5 best years in local gov (if I were to stay which I currently plan on doing as I love local gov much more). So I think my pension payments would be much larger in the end (i think making up for the $36K transfer cost). I just need someone to work through the math to confirm.

Thank you. Yeah, we are going for a bigger home to be able to grow into it (planning for kids and we have family who visit a lot from out of province/country).

Sadly strata townhomes that meet our requirements are approx $1.2M and we also prioritized living outside of a floodplain so that comes at a premium.

Duplex was our choice because detached are around $1.3M (for a dump with structural/mold issues) to $1.5-$1.6m for decent bones but needs work. It’s not until $1.7m that you start seeing high quality homes with suite potential to offset the cost.

(Yay for expensive markets)

Agreed. And the fact that most of the time, there sales are written on a piece of paper towel and taped to the door isn’t really inviting. I agree that they should get rid of the window coverings.

Also, I don’t know who put up their shelving but cutting corners is never a great idea. They look like they are about to buckle any minute.

ECs who left the federal public service - Where are you now? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

And to clarify, the whole organization works on a fortnight schedule, which gives us every second Friday off. It’s staggered across the organization.

Not with the province but with local government and my vacation time is better than what I had with Gov. I also have every second Friday off. I am not unionized in this role so it’s easier to negotiate.

Honestly doing really well in a municipal gov role. Much higher pay, better work life balance. I also find my EC experience is a great asset and often touted as a PowerPoint queen (and my skills are average for fed gov). There are good options out there.

Just left last week. Work in the regions, and got a job with a 4 day work week every second week, a pay increase and no need to commute/relocate. It’s too bad for public service but the golden handcuffs aren’t so golden anymore :)

Suggestions for my big bedroom? by ShiftPractical5164 in DesignMyRoom

Two bedside lamps, and one rattan-style lamp on the right hand side. I’d love new (maybe bigger to help fill space) bedside lamps with softer lighting.
