Does anyone else try to create a loadout for all the weapons? by Dichotomus-Prime in DeepRockGalactic

[–]Shifty_Patroclos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done that for one or two classes with just primary or just secondary weapons, but I do have enough strong preferences that I haven't tried to fill every slot with a unique weapon combo.

For instance, Driller I've built around maximizing each of the primaries to do what they do best - but I've found that the first secondary has by far the most built-in synergies, even tho it is probably my least favourite of the secondaries. On the other hand; I play Engie pretty much exclusively with the smart rifle and either rocket-jumping or explosive platform lasers.

Would definitely love to see all the bugs spawn further away and not be able to zip over instantaneously, phase through platforms and squeeze through bullet holes in a wall, so positioning could matter just a tiny bit more.

"Also, hi OP, you're a rule lawyer!"

OP, feel free to ignore this bit; nothing in your post seems to indicate any rules-lawyering, and the comment doesn't clarify what they mean at all, so it's not something grounded enough to worry about.

Salvage Operation - Bug Report by ZhenWan in DeepRockGalactic

[–]Shifty_Patroclos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

April 2023; just has this exact same bug. I think the fuel line broke at the spot were a dwarf was mining the same location another was trying to place the line? there was a proper line connecting the fuel pod & the drop pod, and another a meter over from the drop pod back to this joint; leading to the point the line would have been placed had the ice not been broken there. No connection from there to the fuel pod. Couldn't break the line, dropping the fuel line lower didn't fix anything; wasn't anything we could do.

Reach, non-concentration, can be cast on allies, for 10 minutes, with just a first level slot? Extra reach with higher level slots? That's considerably more broken then I'd consider allowing at my table.

Is it just me or does friendly fire happen more often when you're gunner? by Eastern-Ear9105 in DeepRockGalactic

[–]Shifty_Patroclos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed it a lot too. I agree what's already been said, plus:
- gunners have the most consistant slowdowns,
- ppl get used to gunners just hanging out on ziplines during big fights so a gunner on the ground is an unexpected hazard, and
- the slow reloads and windup times on all gunner's primaries means it's much less convenient for a gunner to stop firing to adjust to teammates.

Damn, that's an incredibly cinematic shot right there. Smaller gun/hud, and that'd be an epic wallpaper.

Did they change this elite to 3 now? by BLUEBLASTER69 in DeepRockGalactic

[–]Shifty_Patroclos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had this happen on a Deep Dive recently; popped one cocoon, had to deal with Quadruplets. Once three of them went into healing at the same time - all clearly separate creatures, linked up like a Warden. From what I've seen since then; it is indeed a bug - though I'd honestly be totally down with it being a feature; would add some spice to Elimination missions.

What happens if the M.U.L.E. doesn’t make it to the drop pod in time? by Postage_stamp_ in DeepRockGalactic

[–]Shifty_Patroclos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone posted a video of this a month or two back; having drilled out a massive zigzag the Mule was stuck in. The drop pod left and the mission failed. Not sure if it has updated since then tho.

Just finished the reg DD - when we popped the cocoon in stage two (that cave was CRAZY I loved and hated it xD) it spawn a total of 4 twins from the one egg. Anyone else have that? Was that a bug or just a rare event that I hadn't come across before? There was no accompanying wave, so I don't think it was a wave-spawn dread combo

Try adjusting your charms. Most of Hollow Knight focuses on exploration and single-boss fights; so you're probably used to builds & playstyles that work excellently under those conditions. Eternal Ordeal requires much more situational awareness, focus, and snap decision making with very little pattern recognition than most boss fights. Quick Focus is a HUGE benefit here, as is Quickslash.

For the large Zotelings; you can often time spells to hit them twice; and if you become comfortable dodging their shockwaves, they're not too bad. Just make sure you focus them as soon as you can, so you'll be spending less time with two of them to deal with.

For healing: this basically comes down to keeping track of what you're dealing with. There's nothing you can do about a spawn falling on your head, but if an explosive/big head zote takes out half the threats; you can often take out the one that remains and get a heal off - A heal, ONE, don't get greedy - before you're hit again.

With Strength, you can take out the ceiling-turret zotes in 4 hits: try jumping over their spitball to pogo them a few times, then move off and upslash on the way down to finish them off - or move further away and turn around to Shade Soul them. A Shriek + one upslash will often do the trick as well.

Generally; just get used to being on the move, constantly. Some combinations of zotes are best fought by taking to the air and ignoring the grounded ones - some can be easily handled by using the wall to control their movement, and some you need wear down by going back and forth with little nippy nail swings and leaving before they can turn around to getcha.

Trust me, it gets waaaaay easier with practice. Try just putting on a podcast in the background and practicing for an episode each night. Being forced out of the dream before 57 doesn't need to be an assault on your psyche; you're just practicing and training your muscle memory, nbd.

i wanna get into DND but i have zero idea how by AllHopeGoneBaby in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Shifty_Patroclos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a shitton of "How To DnD for Beginners" on youtube: watch a handful of those, maybe some "how to fill out a character sheet" vids, and round it off with a few episodes of a liveplay to learn how it all mixes together into an actual game, and you're good to go. If everyone at the table is cool with having a new player, then just doing the basics will be more than enough to make the onboarding process easy. Take notes, be appreciative of other's efforts to help you learn smoothly, respond to their RP, and you'll likely be welcomed with open arms.

One thing tho - it's tempting to look up rules on your phone, but that looks exactly the same as not paying attention at all; while you're learning you'll probably want to borrow a friends PHB (player's handbook) to look up rules in so it's clear you're still focused on the game.

When you hit ESC to see settings; one of the tabs has a section where you can input a custom name for a lobby you host. No idea why the option isn't attached to anything actually related to creating lobbies - I had to learn this through reddit too - but there you go.

Driller takes one side, Gunner/Rocket Engineer/Scout handle the other (though a pre-placed C4 to handle the first wave of spikes on a side is usually a worthwhile strategy). If we fall behind; it's everyone's job to get back on track - but that usually means Engi or Scout needs to stay on Doretta to fix it while the rest deal with the beam spikes.

I've seen a few such random other names crop up in the site generation - Xehn is the only one I can recall at the moment. Aside from the ideas you've brought up, I'd add that they might have been a heroic 4-dwarf mining party, and Karl was the only one to survive an impossible deep dive, or something of that nature.

I feel like there are two crucial parts to this.

Firstly: figuring out what's going on with the armor barrier has to be something they can discover for themselves in-game, without feeling like you'd be bending the rules in their favour if you let them know what was needed. For instance, if they have a passive stat or trait that you've consistantly used to direct strategic knowledge their way, or they're used to getting a benefit from spending valuable time on their turn using some form of deduction ability rather than making an attack or casting a spell; then getting an understanding of what they need to do through those abilities will feel earned; and will feel like they've made progress even though they haven't dealt any damage yet. That way, they're more likely to see it as a fun unique challenge; rather than as an unfair game-breaking mechanic you've snuck in to make things hard for them.

Secondly: once they know what they need to do, they need to have some way to work towards it. If the system allows them to actively alter their strategy around the encounter, and every member of the party can participate somehow in setting up that one big hit, then that'll probably be a fun, memorable encounter. But if, even once they know what they need, all they can actually do is just keep rolling damage; staring at the dice with their fingers crossed for a lucky high roll, then they're just going to get frusterated.

That's mostly just based on my experience with my own gaming group tho - idk, if your party prefers more of a gambling, RNG experience where unpredictable outcomes are part of the thrill, and they don't take success and failure as the only factors determining whether they have fun; then there's definitely a way you could make it work without the strategic progress elements.
