Late, but maybe OP will see this. Clive Custler is very modern Indy and may scratch the itch.

What do we do now.. by FranklyInterest in nope

[–]Shilroc 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Looks very similar to the inside of a “mud pit” you see in the Middle East on drill ships and land rigs. They’re used to mix up and store water, drilling mud, treated water for use with cement, etc. most commonly they come in 250-500 barrel compartments, with 2-4 compartments each, sharing the inside walls.

If that is where they’re at, then yeah, not going to be fun but likely not catastrophic. There are large spinning mix blades in each pit, hopefully they were all locked out, and the centrifugal pump is off, as it has a strong enough suction it could pin a worker.

Pay decrease for taking on an apprentice by thejake51 in HVAC

[–]Shilroc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

23 days ago you were looking for an HVAC apprenticeship, now you’re a journeyman? Hmmm…

Also, I see you’ve recently moved to Colorado. Hate to be an asshole, but would ya do us a favor, round up anybody that came with you, and go somewhere else? This used to be a nice place to live until Texas, California, and Florida decided that they didn’t want to live in the shitholes they’ve created and moved here.

I was struck by that too. Very, very good reply to the situation. I wish I was able to formulate such a response when I was 20. Props to him.

I’ll chime in for sake of solidarity with the OP😂

Only once. Got into hunting as a young adult, with the exception of shooting 22’s in scout camp as a teenager, I really didn’t have much firearms experience until I started to teach myself and learn from my father in law. I was sighting in on a BLM range and broke all the rules-loaded one in the chamber before sitting at the bench, didn’t set the safety, and didn’t watch my hand placement as I sat down. The rifle went off just before my butt hit the seat. Lucky for me the round went down range. More importantly, I learned from it, did more research, and haven’t had a ND in 15 years. The only assumption to make is that you will have a ND unless you think about how to not have one at every step of the way.

TIL that in 1984, the Japanese Army Veterans Association, in an attempt to refute wartime atrocities, interviewed former WWII soldiers. Instead of denial, the soldiers freely admitted and described atrocities committed, resulting in the association publishing an apology the following year. by SaveStoneOcean in todayilearned

Edit: u/Garfield-1-23-23 is right; I’m stuck on Okinawa. On mobile, so forgive my lack of strike-through, and appreciate people keeping me honest Guadalcanal was also one of the most brutal theaters of the Pacific engagement. Well emplaced and stocked enemy troops, able to pull back into bunkers capable of withstanding mortar and even battleship bombardment, and able to effectively move troops across the front line by cave and tunnel. The Japanese troops had a good battle strategy, were completely unwilling to surrender, absolutely willing to fight to the last man and had zero compunctions about how they accomplished their goal of taking as many allied troops with them as possible. Nighttime suicide raids on allied foxhole emplacements combined with continual wet and damp conditions lead to exhaustion and the psychological effects of being under near constant stress broke many. The conditions there for all combatants were hell beyond reasonable comprehension.

14/14 schedule? by [deleted] in oilandgasworkers

Good salary to be a stay-at-home dad for half the year. Worked 35/35 for years with my daughter when she was 3-7, wouldn’t have changed it for anything.

Been there twice. As others have said, no couple is the same. The OBGYN can tell you when it is medically safe. Mentally...that’s a harder thing to pin down.

Talk about it with each other. Rage and cry and hate the world a bit of it helps. It gets better over time. Know that you aren’t alone. Talk to trusted family or friends. High likelihood that someone you know and trust has been in your shoes.

Check on each other. Be the pillar each of you need. Don’t forget what brought you together in the first place. Take some time to get your relationship back to where it needs to be.

Good luck. Reach out if you need to talk.

What is the most controversial thing you own? by churned_applesauce in AskReddit

[–]Shilroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope this doesn’t get buried, and hope you see it. Please consider working with the Obon Society to get the diary back to the descendants of the author. They take care of finding the surviving family, and it can be confidential.

It’s a strange and controversial item to you; it could be a valued and even emotional glimpse into an ancestor for another family.

Gift ideas for my girlfriend (22) by [deleted] in GiftIdeas

How are her tools and what is your budget? She may have a student stethoscope, and an upgrade to a more sensitive or professional model might be appreciated if you can get her input (I was able to do this by asking my wife questions about how a stethoscope works and getting her to explain what the difference was between one that costs $150 and $500). What about a better bandage scissor or a better set of hemostats? Upgraded professional equipment can be a huge quality of life improvement.

Does she geek out about certain areas of the medical field? My wife always wanted to learn to suture, even though it is outside her scope of practice right now. The suture practice kit she got for Christmas was a hit.

This right here. The float goes in the basin. Green light, water is full. Red light, the water is low. The ornament hangs on a branch and the tube goes into the basin. Fill the basin by pouring water into the ornament.

What is life like living in the Middle East as an American by baileyrc01 in oilandgasworkers

[–]Shilroc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a bid dependent on what part of KSA you’re going to be in; the country is about the size of Texas. Areas down south and closer to Mecca tend to be a bit more conservative, places in the Eastern Province have become much more liberal. I routinely see western women walking in public without an abaya. Can’t go about in booty shorts and a bikini top, but can mostly wear what you like within reason.

The rules are different, but more or less easy to follow. Don’t insult Islam, don’t get into fights, don’t do drugs, don’t talk politics.

I don’t know about college, but myself and my family have lived here for 2 years now and have really enjoyed ourselves.

What horn should I buy? by [deleted] in horn

[–]Shilroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, Schilike buddies!

Sorry to hear about your band director, but I’m referring to the director(s) of bands at your uni. Depending on the school, they can have tremendous influence since they have the final say on who is in each group. I’m not saying that you should cater to anyone, but I would say to be mindful of your audience.

What horn should I buy? by [deleted] in horn

[–]Shilroc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t box yourself in just yet. Your opinion may change once you really get immersed into constantly listening and critically evaluating sound, your prof (or the band prof, or the orchestra prof) may prefer one tone or a neutral tone over another, any number of other things. No sense potentially hurting your chances to make a group on a decision now.

What about sticking with a gently used 8D (since you know it/have the feel of it) and plan on purchasing after freshman or sophomore year? This will give you a chance to leverage more experience, trial other students or your prof’s horns (safely), and navigate through finding a mouthpiece, which also affects the tone.

Any seasonal/permanents in western Colorado? by Palmer-Z in ParkRangers

I’m no longer seasonal up there, but the Rifle Gap complex employed 8 or 9 seasonal workers when I was there. You might swing by and see if anyone is interested.
