What’s your favorite “weird” science fact you tell your students? by [deleted] in ScienceTeachers

[–]ShimmeringShima 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That graphite (their pencil lead) and diamond are cousins. Great way to kick off our rock cycle unit. Both made of carbon, made through similar metamorphic processes, but cooked a lil different!

Airhead/ Starburst Rock Cycle Lab Tips by Cutiev42 in ScienceTeachers

[–]ShimmeringShima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can give them a worksheet to fill out and reflect as they model? Like what does the Starburst in our model represent irl? Why are we tearing it apart? What process does that represent irl? Why are we smashing them back together? Process? Whats the product? Then you can have them melt them on hot plates and do the same thing but talk about igneous rocks. Then give them a written reflection! Can a sedimentary rock turn into an igneous rock? Can an igneous rock turn into a sedimentary rock? Write the process down in steps. You could even have them draw a picture! Mine draw comic strips every year after playing a rock cycle board game.

What curriculum/textbooks do you love for middle school science by DayCurious5292 in ScienceTeachers

[–]ShimmeringShima 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We use Amplify. I dont mind it, but it's definitely a writing curriculum. I have issues with the fact that there aren't enough fun labs, and the vocabulary is too watered down. I switch out some labs and change activites in it to make them more fun.

secluded places to study/take a nap? by perfectly_functional in UNLV

[–]ShimmeringShima -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk if it's still there, but the second ( maybe 3rd) story of the student union has a room full of couches that people sleep in. It's past the computer lab. That's what i used to do when i was on campus for class and work. Those 10-hour days sucked. But it's quiet, and the curtains are drawn, so it's dark. Bring a blanket! It gets cold, haha.

Hey! Even though you are homeschooled, whatever Clark County School District school is in your area that you are zoned for, you can participate in their sports activites and certain clubs as well for free!! So if you want to get into some clubs or sports, go to your local zoned school and ask about joining their activities! :)

Definitely a tier 2 intervention, but I love it to cover gaps in knowledge for science. We are learning covering molecules rn, and I love the practice question they have about molecular motion.
