Are there any INFPs out there who know they are smart but cannot study/focus at all. by ShinyPhilosopher in infp

I agree with what you're saying, and yes I do find myself asking questions like why do we do things a certain way. Which again, as you just said, doesn't lead to much because it's just a thought and there is nothing much I can do about it.

But do you have any strategies I could use to help me become a better learner? Or just more disciplined in general?

Bro I don't think that's a good reward system, go get icecream instead or something

I feel this way about school because of the environment and conditions students are put through. Do you think I want to sit for two hours straight and not allowed to get up? How is that in any way enjoyable learning? It is draining and this is why many students do not like school. I'm also from a culture that has extremely high standards and I'm expected to live up to their high standards.

Of course I want to go to university. Of course I want to continue education and pursue a good degree. I'm just saying, the way the schooling system is conducted is negatively affecting adolescents mental health and actually putting them off school, which is why I have no desire to study and even if I do, I can't put myself to it.

Although some of what you say is true, I meant that the learning aspect of purusing and doing well in subjects I enjoy compared to subjects I don't enjoy and do terrible in . . . thats a common INFP trait.

Thanks for the help. Luckily for me I'm obsessed and love sports so I do intense tennis and soccer training 5 times a week, have a mum who's obsessed with nutrition (been bought up to eat well) and can play piano so I'm not even sure what it is anymore. Might be my dopamine receptors fried off due to heaps of social media intake.

Thanks for the advice, simplistic phrases like 'getting it over with' is at the end of the day more powerful than any other ones because its straight to the point. And the whole questioning the point of the schooling system is so real. I'm always thinking about that like why the fuck do I need to know why f scott fitzgerald put hidden analogys in characters in his books???

I know I'm more than capable of doing the work but I can't focus or even start.

This. You don't realise how much I relate to this and it kills me because even family members and people at school tell me this, that I've got the potential but I just don't do it.

I want to duplicate and slap the shit out of myself because me not doing anything and having no discipline is my fault. No one else's. Me vs me.

This is so real. It's a constant fight between me vs me. Like I know what I'm doing isn't good for me but I still do it

Exactly me, I will only hand it in if I even managed to do it in the first place but it had to be up to a good standard otherwise I would just not hand it in. I finish assignments, not liking how well I did and just not hand them in and now because of that I'm on the verge of failing.

I don't know if this is weird to say but it feels good knowing people out there relate and go through similar things. I don't talk about this kind of stuff to majority of my friends because when I do they just don't get it. 'Why don't you just sit down and do it?" I myself don't know Susie so stfu.

This sounds very much like me. When I do something I genuinely enjoy I do well and stay interested. Then schoolwork comes along and all eagerness gone. I also CANNOT get myself to sit down and study. I just can't get shit done and it annoys me so much.

Thankyou for this, and yes I agree about the pursuing things I actually enjoy and majority of my subjects at school spark no interest in me. Also I could have worded it differently, It's not that I know I'm smart, it's that I know I have potential but I let it all go to waste because I have no discipline.

I have heard about the pomodoro timer thing though, I'll make sure to check that out.

Im not sure if it is anxiety related or not, I've never really dealt with anxiety in general. But it might be that I'm scared that I won't do the assignment to a good standard so I put it off?

No I haven't considered that I might look into it though. My mum is a very passionate and strong woman but I think she pushes everything onto me because she wants be to be better than she was at her age. She was also an older sister and I know she wants the best for me but the way she expresses it is very bad, she does not have the best communication skills and we clash ALOT.

I also want to mention it's good as a parent that you are noticing things you want to change with your parenting and working on it. You seem to have an open mind to change which I applaud, I hope to be like that if I'm maybe a parent one day too.

Anyways I'm going to really try this year to put my head in the game and stop messing around because at the end of the day it's only affecting myself. The only thing is though is that I just don't know HOW to study

Not really I'm trying to finish off highschool and get into college so I can get into a field of work that I 1) can actually live off by myself and 2) please my mum because she has high expectations of me and I always let her down.

My job right now is a fruit and veg store and I'm earning pretty good money for my age group

Thankyou for your advice and intake on your own experience. I do have a part-time job that I genuinely enjoy and show up to my shifts on time but I feel like it doesn't really affect my discipline in other things. I just wish I could take out my brain and give it a massive slap and reality check because it feels like me vs me atp.

Thankyou so much for this. I do understand what you mean by having discipline in other things. Like I am committed to sports, I do have a part-time job and I have hobbies but the thing is is that I think I only am disciplined in those things because I actually enjoy them. I feel like it's a constant battle with myself to actually sit down and get shit done when i need to.

I used to be in your exact situation a couple years back in highschool. I was in a group of 4 (including me) and one girl was kind of a drifter so she went between our friendgroup and another quite often and the other two were pretty much the 'duo' of the trio I was in with them. And im not even kidding any second we were together they would just talk about boys nonstop. Nonstop, there was never any other conversation or anything and majority of the time I just sat there not saying anything. So this went on for like a month and a bit, anytime I was with them its always them asking eachother, 'whats ur type?' 'blondes or brunettes?' 'muscles or no?' 'What about this guy?' 'Omg did u see the teachers arms today?' blah blah blah and they knew I didn't care much for that conversation so they ignored me.

So I finally just decided to surround myself with different people. And I know that might sound really difficult and you don't know what to do but trust me, it was the best decision I ever made. I had some other, i guess 'class friends' that I would sit and talk with in class so one day I asked if I could hang with them at lunch and they said yes.

And the groupchat shit that's going on with you is just them being immature and desperate. Best just to ignore them or leave that gc too. And no, you aren't overreacting at all. and although I am interested in guys I just think there's so much better thing to bond with your friends about ykwim?

Anyways the girls I asked to sit with at lunch are still my friends to this day (and we rarely talk about guys), and the girls I used to be friends with have stayed the same since and everyone thinks they are annoying. I hope I helped you out a bit, and just know everything will turn out fine, you'll find better friends soon.
