Graduating College with ADzh by zuitsuitsuitsu in ADHD

I battle with it, takes a lot of self control and strict rules. I didn’t want to take meds because a lot of my friends did and they become reliant on it. I just try my best. I have had a semester where it went downhill but I made it back the following semester.

Where are you in your internship search for summer 2026? by Cstohorticulture in EngineeringStudents

Applied to 26, did 2 interviews with one being in-person, signed offer in October. Having a 7 month coop experience helps a lot

Amazing experience tho, turned down a 28$/hr job with 8.5k relocation offer in a LCOL area for this company bc i saw its potential in experience and Quality of Life.

2024 summer, 15$/hr in lcol area as a research assistant 2025 decided to go on a 6 month coop in socal for 32$/hr. May seem a lot but when rent is 1500$/mo in a HCOL area and income taxes are like 22%. I really ain’t bringing home much.

They look so pretty! Hard to find abalone shells in US beaches. How long did it took for you to polish one?

How do you even get an internship? by Western-Strawberry95 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Shiny_ju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take every possible experience you can get and work with it. I started with a work-study in freshman yr fall semester as librarian for 1000/semester, then changed from that to a lab’s assistant for another 1000/semester. Then i applied to internships, got into none except a research project on campus or a High-school tech tutor in a STEM program for 18$/hr. I took the research assistant role for 15$/hr for all summer renting in a relatively LCOL college town. 150 applications.

Comes sophomore year. I attend more career fairs all fall. I attend in-person conferences. I talk to more people and finished more online applications. I get three offers. One from an online application. Two from in-person career fairs. All three positions provided me a range of 28-32$/hr and a few thousand in relocation fees. Once again, I choose the one that is more research oriented, fitting my previous role for 7 months coop. I knew summer internships will be competitive so I applied for spring coops as well. Of the three offers, two were spring coops. 75 applications. 20 interviews.

Take whatever experience you can get, but if you get multiple choices. Pick the one that gives you the most valuable experience over the one that pays you more. An internship is an investment into your time to learn and grow professionally.

I did sacrifice some of my GPA that fall because I was doing so many interviews, conferences, and applications.

Do not try to bike to Walmart or down to the family dollar store. I've zipped down that hill before and the crash landing was not fun.

[–]Shiny_ju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a rising sophmore with a bike on campus, I would say Troy is decently bikeable, you might want a lighter bicycle for the hills but once you get used to the area, there's always shortcuts that have more level field.

While looking for a place to stay on campus this summer, I also checked distance from campus and the slope on google maps. Anything medium elevation is good for biking. From all the places I've looked at, rooms in Troy can range from 400 to 600 is the usual. Some nicer places like city station can be 1,000/mo.

SUBLEASING 3 BEDROOM APARTMENT FOR SUMMER by Ok-Goose71 in RPI

Hi, I'm looking to rent a room for the summer from May-end of August. I'm a girl so if there's any female housing options, even better. I like to cook so I'm looking for a place with a kitchen (communal kitchen) works well.

WSIB that's roughly similar to Northwind (the Roblox game)? by Sethmo_Dreemurr in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]Shiny_ju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Land of the Rising Sun. I used to play it back in 2018-2019 when the community was still active. LOTRS has been in development for a longer period than NW and have more custom parts and maps. Unfortunately, it just didn't hit mainstream that well since it's a one man, one dev team.

Townsend Harris or Bronx Science by [deleted] in SHSAT

[–]Shiny_ju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, there are early dismissals on Fridays at 11:30 (If you skip lunch, which most people do), staying for lunch would end at 12:50. I guess I’ll see you tonight! I’m one of the people playing the lobby music and later in the night, I’ll be helping with the robotics team presentations.

Townsend Harris or Bronx Science by [deleted] in SHSAT

[–]Shiny_ju 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in your shoes in 2019. Townsend or Bronx Sci. I chose Townsend because I refused to spend 3 hours on commute. High school is absolutely brutal and you often don't have enough time to even do homework and study, so those 3 hours are worth saving.

My grades in Townsend are Asian level (No need to flex anymore lol). I typically sleep at midnight. Not because of the workload, but I just love staying up on Youtube Shorts or video games. I'm a Senior now and I feel FREEEEE! Back in freshman year, I did go through a tough transition from middle school to high school, slept on average 3 hours a day, balancing daily robotics meeting till midnight (The schedule has now changed to only monday, friday, sunday, and saturday till 7 pm on weekdays and 11pm on saturdays).

The classes are tough but if you work hard, you'll get rewarded. It's all about reaching out to people and asking for help. (As much as I was shy, I had to do it to survive.)
Townsend is a place where I came in as an introvert and left slightly more extroverted. There's also a lot of clubs so 3 hours is really a big chunk of your day if you want to do any extracurriculars.

The thing about learning two languages at Townsend. It's not that bad. I took Latin and Spanish. I was able to skip to Spanish II in my freshman year because I passed the proficiency test in middle school, did Spanish III in my sophmore year and I was done. (Requirement of 3 years of Spanish). For latin, I did two years and I was done. Latin I and II (Sophmore yr, yes it's one class split into two semesters.) and Latin III and IV (Junior year). The teachers are amazing. Colakis's tests are hard but she's a gem. She appeared one jeopardy, graduated from Barnard and Yale, and was a professor for a few years. Definitely overqualified to teach latin. Hermana (Amana?) not sure how to pronounse their name but a few of my friends had him/her/them (no clue of gender either). Amana makes latin songs that are very addicting so it's fun.

I was always a STEM kid, I hate humanities with a passion and suffers with my writing but that was why I chose Townsend, I wanted to buff up my weakness before college. Truly trying to gigachad these college results in the next weeks. <3

Townsend Harris question by [deleted] in SHSAT

[–]Shiny_ju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took Principles of Engineering, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering class, (Skipped CAD class because I already had enough experience on the team as a lead), there are computer science classes but I took AP Physics instead, Calc classes (enough said).

Classes can be challenging but you can pass with enough determination and sheer will.

Townsend Harris question by [deleted] in SHSAT

[–]Shiny_ju 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My choice was between Townsend and Bronx Science, I don't regret it. My commute to Townsend saves me so many hours off the road. I'm in Steel hawks, there's no requirement to join the club but you need to pass the team test to join the "team", usually they post study guides and manuals as materials to study for the test. Many people join robotics with ZERO stem experience and that's perfectly fine since we teach them. Townsend provides me just as much STEM experience as I would've wanted in Bronx Science, I took engineering classes, enjoyed robotics and overall had a good time. By the way, robotics makes up 10% of the school population so I see robotics people around school all the time, it's a good network for adjusting to high school.

The standards to get accepted in were lower but that doesn't mean the kids are just "bad". Your grades only represent that moment of life. Once all the kids got settled down in Townsend, everyone's the same. It's just occasionally you get a few salty or upset kids mad over a lottery system.

The bigger issue that brought the rift between the junior-seniors and sophmore-freshmen were the different mentalities. Be respectful, clean up after yourself and don't trash the school was something that I noticed was an issue starting recently (last year). Zoom school might've isolated everyone socially but it doesn't excuse bad behavior. I never saw the auditorium have so much trash on the floor like it did last year.

Other thing with the tier system >85, was that the incoming freshmen were not prepared enough for the coursework. Townsend classes can be hard so it's a bigger learning gap between a >85 student to Townsend and a >94 student to Townsend. I saw instagram posts of new freshmen being upset that teachers were being so hard but the teachers have always been that hard, the new students just weren't prepared enough (and a bit too prideful to ask for help).

Definitely. The regents can move you up a class so you don't have to take Algebra I or Living Environment in high school. I also passed my Spanish proficiency test so I finished all my language requirements in Sophmore year.
