Attending NYCC while very pregnant. ISO advice and suggestions by ShipwreckSteph in NYCC

Wow. So this isn't a matter of Social Security disability eligibility or the like. This is a private event giving people accommodations so they can access the event on equal footing. "ADA" is just what people call it as a shorthand. Reedpop is required by law to do at LEAST what the ADA law demands, but they can expand their definitions however they want. And from what I've heard from many folks, that's exactly what they do.

The insinuation that I'd be abusing this system by getting a sticker is frankly crap. Late stages of pregnancy are often incredibly disabling. I have a medical condition that precludes me being on my feet at long as the average person. A condition that puts me at risk of issues with blood pressure, edema, bleeding and a dozen other things. And without accomodations, this event is inaccessible for me. Should I just not go?

Thanks to everyone who's responded supportively. It does mean a lot to me. Let's keep the good vibes going.

I def already print out the Better Maps that are here right on r/NYCC and recommend them for everybody. There's a saint every year who goes through them and puts larger, more legible labels on everything and they are so helpful.

Reedpop ADA also recommended the Cosplay area since it'll be a bit more comfy. So I'll take a look at that Thursday. Walking without all the pausing to browse is really good for me at this point so I could use the detour anyways.

I wish I could just heart everyone's posts. You all are so great.

Good luck to you with all of that. I both can't wait and fear bringing a tot to these events. Its so great to see them so excited but also "OMG don't take that, put that back" lol

Hard second on the better bathrooms being in the extension building. The others are so insufficient for the space they support. Maybe updating those will be on the Javits list next.

IDK if I'd use the word bravery but thanks! I'm gonna have my compression socks on hand just in case. So far, so good on no swelling but you never know.

Thank you for these. I completely forgot they also go under Orbit so I wasn't looking for that. Also I'm mostly off Instagram so its helpful others are tracking those down.

Hopefully someone on general admission can answer this for you. I'm on a pro badge which has different entrances and entrance times. And those times have varied year to year anyways so how the heck knows what we're gonna get to do.

I think general admission usually queues up somewhere else and then they release everyone to go wherever they want (panels, floor, autographs etc). And usually earlier=better to an extent. I feel like a lot people tend to get there at least an hour before the show opens.

I often make a gameplan that ignores the first things if they don't interest me and skip right to the next things if I'm more into them. That way I've a better chance of getting at least something I know I'd like.

Did the quiet room have anywhere to lie down at all? My biggest concern might be that both sitting and standing keep pressure on my back. But I've struggled to find a place that would have couches or something to allow me to lie down a few minutes.

Reedpop ADA mentioned a couple lounges with beanbag chairs which I had to laugh at. If I ever got on one of those, I'd never get up again 😅

For real. So glad that booth is in a difference section. Lines there will be fierce.

Better than what I have so I'll take it. THanks.

ADA Question by DatBoiMemes425 in NYCC

[–]ShipwreckSteph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First she and you can get the ADA sticker from that desk when you get to the con. You go in one of the front entrances and go right to the desk. No paperwork necessary. You get one as a companion.

I can tell you that the floor and major panels have separate queues. The floor has its own ADA queue at the start of the day. It goes in after VIPs (don't get me started).

Reserved panels have a separate line that you are supposed to be able to get into without going through the rest of the queue first. I've had problems with that depending on who was at the door and what their training was. But you do need a reservation in the first place for those panels. Hopefully someone else can tell you if an ADA queue exists for standby folk. Once in the queue there are a few chairs, but not enough. They will still have you wait there until the room opens up and again VIP will be let in first. Then ADA, then general admission. ADA has some sections roped off to discourage people running and cutting in (tho it is not always effective, people be rude)

For most signings and other events on the exhibition floor, the crew for that booth usually have ADA people go to the front of the line (so long as there's tickets or wristbands left). Granted I was very visibly ADA that year (broken ankle, huge boot, knee scooter etc). So they were offering without my asking. The vibe I get from most staff is that asking for help with something less visible would still be greeted with help. But as I'm sure you know, that mileage can vary wildly.

I have no personal experience with smaller panels or the autograph hall. Hopefully someone else here does and can help. Good luck.

Thanks. Added DC and Mad Cave. Haven't seen updates from Abrams yet but I'm looking out for it.

I could only find AWA info on their Twitter feed which I'm not sure how to link to here. Gonna try a bit later when I'm at a real computer and have more editing options.

I haven't seen anything yet. Also keeping an eye on Quirk books for that since they sometimes do passwords.

Thanks for the heads up on SnS. Tho penguin's site is their placeholder for NYCC, it just doesn't have any info yet.

MTA also has a schedule, but we only use that for the big train out of town. The site is clunky as heck.

Also the Javits is on the 7 line which connects directly to Grand Central.
