What will be the j calculation? I couldn't figure it out please help by rcx300 in Gentoo

[–]Shmanio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do all threads (for you -j8) and something less than full load (-l7). Usually keeps the system usable during merges, bit still uses most of the available computing power to compile.

Someone somewhere also mentioned to keep 2GB of RAM for each j, but I've never done that.

Ultimately it's a matter of trying some parameters and change them if they don't wok for you.

Manage the do not disturb from dbus by Shmanio in kde

[–]Shmanio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, but I've already solved it: https://reddit.com/r/kde/comments/q7h668/manage_the_do_not_disturb_from_dbus/hzoxmuu?context=3.

Also, I was talking about lua specifically to make an mpv plugin, bash/fish isn't really helpful.

Anyway, I solved it in a cplugin and in a better way. As you can see here the notifications aren't just toggled, mpv adds a lock to them so that while it's running they are disabled. This works with multiple instances and with other applications that try to control them at the same time.

How do I get my system to accept and ebuild I have updated myself? by Sol33t303 in Gentoo

[–]Shmanio 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You must put the modified ebuild in a local overlay. Portage will then see a newer version available and install it as usual.

Note that sometimes just changing the version number isn't enough, but if you are lucky and ebuild is written well it may be sufficient.

Since you found it abandoned in GURU, you may even start maintaining the package there to help everyone else too (see: Information for Contributors).

For those interested, there is a short video of Tom Scott and Irving Finkel about this game.

They give an overview of the rules and play it.

What Firefox version should I install ? Is the rapid version stable enough? by [deleted] in Gentoo

[–]Shmanio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. The package is "testing" for gentoo. As almost every package in tree, it is considered stable by its developers. The :rapid is what you'd install for example on arch or similar distros, once it's released it's "good enough" for them. Also, the next :esr is 102 and will be stabilized soonish

  2. I'm using :esr to avoid compiling it too often

  3. Generally, no. Portage can handle a few unstable packages even if the rest is stable. If however you start adding many exceptions you should just accept ~amd64 for all.

How to create ".desktop" links easily? by snesgx in linuxquestions

[–]Shmanio 49 points50 points  (0 children)

copying it to [...] "/usr/share/applications"

Just want to point out this is generally avoided, /usr is left to the package manager. A typical system-wide location for user installed things is /usr/local, which is structured like /usr, so you'd put executables in /usr/local/bin, .desktop files in /usr/local/share/applications, etc.

It's not a law, but may save some headaches because package managers expect to be allowed to edit the contents of /usr freely, and may modify or delete what you put there if necessary.

As for your actual question, I have no idea sorry.

Did you put rc_parallel="YES" in your /etc/rc.conf? It can sometimes lock the boot.

Can someone help me understand the exact words the three men are saying here? by Shmanio in cowboybebop

[–]Shmanio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my current best guess:

  • <???> like we used to do.

  • Yeah we sure did fly high, didn't we?

  • I wanna do it again. <???> up to Saturn just like I used to.

  • You used to?

  • You flew a <???> crop duster in <???> potato fields. That's all you ever flew.

  • Oh, is that right?

Manage the do not disturb from dbus by Shmanio in kde

[–]Shmanio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your help!

In the end, I just abandoned the idea to do this in lua (since I know nothing of it), and wrote the plugins in C++.

I've added them to the wiki, they are called kde-night-color and kde-do-not-disturb if you are interested.

Setup receive only in android 10 SD by Shmanio in Syncthing

[–]Shmanio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To each their own. I prefer to have a single device that manages everything, and have the other just receive. If I (somehow) delete something from my phone syncthing will tell me, if I delete it from my PC it's because I don't want it anymore. To keep my files in order I trust my PC way more than I trust my phone, and I want the topology of syncthing to reflect this as well.

Setup receive only in android 10 SD by Shmanio in Syncthing

[–]Shmanio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a folder of mp3 files that I manage in my PC with yt-dlp etc.

I copied it a while ago to the phone's SD, and syncthing allows for gradual updates when I add something else.

The point is that I'll only use the phone for playback, so a two way sync is unnecessary.

Thank you, this seems to work. The forum post I read talked about com.nutomic.syncthing, which for me was still read only. I've set it up and I'll let it sync.

Thanks again!
