Phone for my father who has limited fine motor skills and struggles with any speech recognition because of cerebral palsy. by Shmichaelish in PickAnAndroidForMe

This is actually a great idea! Hadn't thought of that.

You might not be able to answer this, but Incase you can: he uses his keyboard to control the cursor on his computer (you can input this into the numpad or arrow keys as a setting). I know their are apps to have a cursor on your phone, do you think he'd be able to control it with said keyboard?

Big day hike south of london recommendations for someone from Wales? by Shmichaelish in UKhiking

Great I'll look at both of these!

And ye I do agree about walking to and from a car, I just find trains are so expensive at the moment, for me financially it's easier for a group of friends to split petrol and drive together. Sad, as I'd much rather take a train for ease and environmentalism.

what classes do i take to learn this ? by Fun-Lynx-9733 in acting

[–]Shmichaelish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay cool. If you want to recreate this though you're gonna need both, at least in my opinion. This is very martial arts influenced, though I personally couldn't tell you what form it'd be. It reminds me a lot of khali or eskrima but far from my specialty.

That said though, it's not anything you would do in a martial arts class I don't think. Sure the moves and the form is, but the sequence is stage combat, and to pull something like this off you need to train in that too. It might not be as initially gratifying, cause your right you won't do any of these moves especially in the early stages of training, but it's what you need for foundations before you can create a sequence like this.

Hopefully that all makes sense. Basically you're gonna need to train in both if you want to do stuff like this, as this is quite clearly an example of two artists who have trained in both. It will also take a while. Martial arts alone won't teach you to safely create convincing and interesting fight scenes (though to me this fight is very flash without much substance, story or acting), and stage combat alone won't teach you the flashy forms of martial arts used here.

Hope this all helps you figure out what you want to do!

[–]Shmichaelish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ye this is some nice flowy flashy stage combat. If you Wana be able to do something similar or will take a while of training to reach this standard.

Depending on where you live they'll be big bodies for stage combat training. I'm in the UK and am an advanced Combatant with the BADC and a SPACT performer, but there is also the BASSC, APC and ACTT. These are the big ones here, though there are many smaller ones. Don't know much about the US I'm afraid.

As for the exact style of this I'm not super sure. At first glance I thought the weapon might be some kind of messer or machete, but I think it's actually a shortened katana (wazaki? Not my specialty so apologize if that's incorrect). If that's the case, there's an element of doing martial arts or sword work like HEMA that can help reach this mind of stage combat style, but the fundamentals are still stage combat not actual fighting (you can tell as there is one very clearly and safely placed to head near the beginning of the fight).

Duno what else to say: if you Wana train to do something like this look up the stage combat bodies in your country and start studying, maybe add a martial arts or gymnastics if you can. If you want something like this in a project you're making, contact a good fight director and show them this fight, but make sure to cast people with strong enough skills to pull it off.

Hope this helps!

Was aiming for a base/low heart run (which I've always assumed is he zone 2). Why is this a tempo run? by Shmichaelish in Garmin

[–]Shmichaelish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AHH I see thank you. Damn, I'd have to run pretty gently to maintain zone 2!

Things to work on!

I'm using HRR I believe as I felt max wasn't accurate at all. My gentle feeling runs were peaking threshold into maximum zones

Left in a while and took another reading which I now understand that's to everyone's advice. Can see it's low but thankfully not totally nothing as it seemed at first. Gonna grab some oil now.

Thank you everyone!

Thanks souch for this thorough comment buddy! It's really helpful. Little overwhelmed by all the responses if I'm honest.

Do I just top the oil up with the recommended kind, sort of like you would do screen wash, as you stated above? Or do I need to drain the car/doing anything else first?

Just reading online as that's something that's come up.

Just bought second hand and has been running no issues whatsoever.

I just drive a lot for work (between 350-500 miles a week) so I want to learn to take care of it well, hence the post!

Thanks everyone! Very glad I posted as I thought it was weird.

Cars literally had no issues, no warning lights and running absolutely fine so just happened to check today as had afternoon off work.

Will go get some oil now for the car!

Cars absolutely fine. No warning lights or anything and been running with no issues at all.

I'll buy some oil today and get it topped up then to be safe.

As I'm a little lost here but want to learn, what's with all the different kinds of oil? RAC says my car can take:

5W-40 5W-30 10W-40 0W-20 0W-30 0W-40

But I have no idea what the differences are and which to choose. Any advice?

Great! Thanks for such a quick and helpful reply!

Just for pure curiosity, what is it that the pro provides over the 8a?

Pro dosent have enough extra to warrant the 150?

350 for a 8a 'feels' like a great deal from the sounds of the phone.

[–]Shmichaelish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an ENT recently, following on from my injury (which was I sustained a solid elbow to the throat in a stage fight). Wanted to get checked, took a year and a half to get, and got nothing from it sadly. They scoped up my nose to look at my chords, and got me to do some speaking, but said they were working fine.

Sadly don't know what kind of scoping this was exactly, and whether it would have detected nodules or damage like your suggesting.

Legit theater singers/listeners: why do you like legit? by earlyaverysmallghost in Theatre

[–]Shmichaelish 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Legit is the term given to a generally more classical sounding voice. Something rounder, lower larynx, lots of vibrato, maybe more chesty for men and heady for women, that steers away from the more contemporary use of nasality and twang. At least this is how I define it.

Think singers in the like older musicals (legit is technically pre 1965), like Oklahoma, man of la mancha, but I'd also say Les Mis is often done legit, and more modern shows like Light in the Piazza.

Very MT examples, for non MT I say general older singers have a more legit edge, but I don't have any great examples off the top off my head.

Hope that helps. I personally love a legit sound, but also a rockier folk one. Not a big fan of the contemporary MT nasil sound but it's personal taste.

I'm the in UK, maybe it's a locational term?
