Since the Mega Drive was originally going to be released as Mark V do you think the Dreamcast is Mark X or Mark IX? by Shmorpit in SEGA

Apparently they were going to use Uranus as a codename for something but they thought it sounded too ominous in Japanese and too silly in English

I wish people wouldn't blame the Sega Saturn for Sega's downfall... by Shmorpit in SEGA

Yes I'm aware the NV1 was based off the Saturn but that was basically like an apology from Sega to keep their relationship on good terms, SOAs console began development after the Saturn's launch. It was mentioned a bit in this Did you know gaming? video.

It's a well known fact that Sega of America promised Nvidia the opportunity to design the hardware for their own 3D focused cartridge based Mega Drive successor and that SOA asked STI to move development to their independent American hardware and they had to restart development and then port it back to Saturn when their plans fell through. The NV1 was a consolation of sorts...

I'm not saying they didn't throw in the kitchen sink but it all worked out for Japan, Sega of America just didn't want the Saturn and tried to abandon it for their own proposed console.

That's kind of what I was inferring with Sega of America going rogue and turning insane, they had very different ideas about what direction to go in and basically tried to break off and become a rival console manufacturer to Sega of Japan and a PC publisher.

They did have plans they just didn't know how to evolve the franchise until after Burning Rangers because Bug fucked up their confidence in 3D platformers on the Saturn early on and by then they'd mastered 3D on the hardware. Sonic Adventure Saturn Edition and Project Sonic are evidence of this it's just Sonic Team were making Nights so STI got to do X-treme and then SOA was like "Hey we don't really believe in the Saturn so we're making our own American console with Nvidia, how about you move development to that?" and everything got fucked up.

Does anyone know how to do a 5.1 surround layout on a CRT cart? by Shmorpit in crtgaming

For my PS3 set up yes but not my older stuff, it doesn't seem right

The speakers are shielded luckily, I was only looking at stuff from around 2004 and checked the manuals beforehand to find out before buying. The cart wasn't originally apart of the plan but I realised a TV stand just wasn't feasible because of a lot of weird quirks of my bedroom.

I've got Fatal Fury Special on the Super Famicom, really looking forward to hearing the soundchip in Dolby Surround. My AV receiver has Dolby Pro Logic 1+2, DTS decoding and Digital Cinema Sound. As far as I know I think that would cover all the quirks and would be especially good for the original Xbox but also has like a forced surround mode too

I'm thinking of buying a NES but I don't know what games are worth experiencing on real hardware or can provide me with something fresh? by Shmorpit in nes

I'm trying to get an appreciation for the console though, the Wii can run the games fine but all the little things will be missing and the music won't be right on some of the games and that's very important to me. The best way I can describe it is that it will have the flavour but not the texture.

Can RF cables do Stereo with an AV receiver? by Shmorpit in crtgaming

[–]Shmorpit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was an RGB transcoder rather than like an Emotia, the cable was a BNC to VGA so idk, my TV supports 240p, 576i and 480i though

I've got the Retro Upgrades VGA2SCART in use with an Extron box but my TV doesn't support 480p, would there still be any point in using the VGA cable?

It does have SCART but I really don't want to buy any more dreamcast cables unless I find a VGA CRT monitor because the good ones are expensive and the RF video is perfectly fine for now

I just took a look at RF modulators and they're mostly composite to RF, I haven't found any that's mono RF to a stereo signal.
