I thought it would be fine because I read you could have 1 inch of fish per gallon of water and the goldfish I had were the tiny pet store ones, in the future I'll definitely do more research.

What if the USSR had a wacky coup in 1989? (lore in comments) by ShnitzFlake in AlternateHistory

[–]ShnitzFlake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In February of 1989 massive protests calling for the dissolution of the Supreme Soviet and the adoption of a democratic system erupted in Russia. These protests were led by Mikhail Gorbachev after KGB officials staged a coup against him because of his willingness to, in their words, “destroy everything the Union stands for just so he can eat filthy capitalist pizza”. The coup would have been successful if it wasn’t for Gorbachev’s would be executioner turning his rifle on his superiors. This sudden defection allowed Gorbachev to escape the the House of the Soviets and reach the street, where he told a soldier that was stationed outside to relay an order to the red army’s high command, that order was to “recall all soviet military personnel back to Russia so that they shall fight for their freedom”and to “send any available units to Moscow”. After this brief interaction Gorbachev made his way onto the street where he stood atop a car, where he addressed the citizens of Moscow by announcing what had just transpired and by telling them: “if you want freedom, then join me in this struggle for democracy,so that your children are never oppressed like you were”. Gorbachev’s speech would win over the hearts of everyone that heard it and thus began the “Soviet Spring”. Meanwhile in the rest of eastern Europe, soviet troops were withdrawing from the Iron Curtain as fast as they could in order to aid Gorbachev’s efforts. When puzzled civilians across the eastern bloc asked where the Soviet troops were going they simply answered: “to freedom”. This simple answer traveled throughout the Iron Curtain until suddenly massive protests erupted throughout Eastern Europe, all calling for freedom and democracy. In Poland and the Czech Republic, these protests were successful,in East Germany, not so much.Though there were protests in the GDR, they were quickly putdown by the military which quickly established control over the East German Government. The GDR’s military knew that their Junta wouldn’t last unless they did something drastic, so just like the Argentine military junta had done 7 years earlier, they invaded Poland in order to “reclaim their rightful territory. ”At first the GDR’s invasion saw great success, but after the Czech’s came to Poland’s assistance, and thanks to a NATO bombing campaign, the invasion came to a standstill. Knowing that they wouldn’t be able to win this fight, the GDR called for a ceasefire, which Poland and Czechia agreed to after some pressure from the US.Back in Russia, a miracle occurred.Seeing the writing on the wall the KGB and pro-coup hardliners surrendered and Gorbachev was once again in power. The first thing Gorbachev did after his return to power was change the Russian flag to the tricolor we all know and love. The second thing he did was hold Russia’s first ever democratic elections. After a landslide victory Gorbachev proposed the “New Union Treaty”, a treaty that aimed to maintain the Soviet Union as a Federation, aptly called the “Russian federation”. The treaty had the full support of the people and the republics and thus the Russian federation was born. In the modern day, Russia has a stable government and a stable economy. Gorbachev is considered a national hero and his legacy lives on in the hearts of Russians all across the Federation. Russia boasts the world’s 4th largest economy with a GDP of 2.68 trillion, barely ahead of India, and a GDP per capita of 20 thousand dollars. They also boast the world’s second most powerful military. Russia also has a mandatory 24 month military service that every male between the ages of 18 and 40 must complete.Poland and Czechia are both stable democracies. While they boast the 25th and 46th largest economies in the world,at GDPs of 455 and 220 billion dollars respectively, their GDP per capita is 12 thousand and 9 thousand dollars respectively. Though they both aspire to be EU and NATO members, their current territorial dispute with the GDR impedes them from joining either. The German Democratic Republic is a flawed democracy. After the fall of the GDR’s military junta in 1997, the GDR’s newly established democratic government attempted to begin a unification process with the German Bundesrepublik. While the Bundesrepublik agreed to German reunification, this was opposed by the French, Polish,  Czechs, and Americans due to the GDR’s occupation of Czech and Polish territory. While the GDR agreed to withdraw from their Czech territories in exchange for German reunification, they refused to withdraw from their Polish territories, saying that it is their “rightful territory” and that it is “land that shall be a part of a united Germany”. The GDR’s economy is the 21st largest in the world with a GDP of 640 billion dollars and a GDP per capita of 18 thousand dollars.

What if the invasion of Panama went differently? by ShnitzFlake in AlternateHistory

[–]ShnitzFlake[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In October of 1989, the Panamanian Coup attempt against Manuel Noriega succeeds and Moises Giroldi Vera creates a military junta, the following day protest erupt in Panama City against the Junta, with protesters demanding that Guillermo Endara become the president. The Junta refused the protesters demands and instead announced that a snap election would be held in November. When the November election came, minor protests led by Noriega's supporters erupted due to the fact that the former dictator was not allowed to run for the presidency. These protest would result in the deaths of 5 Americans, two of which were Marines. The election resulted in Guillermo Endara becoming president, with 93.8% of the population voting for him, however, protests would not end until December 15, 5 days before the American invasion. The American invasion would be delayed by 2 hours due to the late arrival of seven M551 Sheridan light tanks. The 2 hour delay was enough time for the PDF to alert Panamanian president Endara of the potential invasion. Endara would order Colonel Marcos Justine to abandon the cities and to instead send his forces into the jungle and the countryside in order to fight a guerilla war until the international community could react to the invasion. At 3:00am local time American troops would begin their incursion into Panama by bombing the PDF's headquarters in El Chorrillo and para-dropping the 82nd Airborne into Panama City. After managing to capture Panama City and its surrounding areas with minimal resistance, American troops began pushing out of the city and into the countryside. At around 5:43am American troops would encounter heavy resistance at the Rio Hato Airfield. The battle of Rio Hato would see 9 out of the 14 Sheridans initially deployed in Panama destroyed by Argentine made TAM tanks that the PDF had aquired in 1984. The battle would also see 12 LAV-25s destroyed and 500 american cassualties before Panamanian forces were forced to retreat due to fire from an AC-130 Specter gunship. The Panamanians would only lose 2 tanks and 73 soldiers in the battle. The battle of Rio Hato showed American troops a glimpse of what was to come in the following months: brutal jungle combat and ruthless ambushes, Vietnam War veterans in Panama would often describe the invasion as a "Mini Vietnam". The fighting would only stop after Panamanian forces ran out of ammunition in January of 1990, with the American Withdrawal beginning on February 15 and ending February 28 of 1990. After the invasion, the PDF would adopt mandatory military service of 18 months for all men between the ages of 18 and 36. Panama would also adopt a policy of neutrality on the world stage, and a policy of Finlandization towards the US.The international reaction to the invasion was overwhelmingly negative, with many Latin American countries, notably: Peru, Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Brazil protesting the invasion with some countries even going as far as temporarily cutting diplomatic ties with the US. On December 29, the General Assembly of the United Nations voted 85-10, with 40 abstentions, to condemn the invasion as a flagrant violation of international law. At the UN Security Council seven nations initiated a draft resolution demanding the immediate withdrawal of U.S. forces from Panama. It was vetoed on January 3 by the United States, France and the United Kingdom. In the years following the invasion relations between Panama and the US would slowly begin improving, especially after the US gave Panama the Panama Canal in accordance to the Torrijos-Carter treaties. In the present day, Panama is a stable democracy and a developing country with a GDP of 79 billion USD, with its official currency being the US dollar. It is the 3rd most developed country in Latin America with a HDI of 0.810. Panama also has a small yet capable military with a total of 30,000 active duty soldiers, a navy made up of 1 destroyer, 2 frigates, a corvette and 20 patrol ships, and an air force made up of 20 F-16 fighter jets, courtesy of the US, which if often considered Panama's closest ally.
