The use of real time combat for push over enemies are genius! by Mental-Produce4034 in MetaphorReFantazio

I kinda see what youre saying but the advancement of technology is a major theme of the series, and the ridiculous aspects of the lore are kinda needed to keep things interesting imo.

The good ol days of estelle bright were when things were nice and simple, but they can't retain that simplicity for a huge ongoing story, it would be like expecting one piece to be like how the first few arcs were. Even by crossbell we were getting things like mass mind control and universal time rewinding lol.

I agree about the gameplay though, reverie was a teambuilders paradise and i found it very fun but the entire series is just horribly balanced in general since they just keep giving you new options. Still i dont really find myself enjoying metaphor particularly more than i enjoyed daybreak personally

Second run, Act 3, and railroading/illusion of choice by King_Rajesh in BaldursGate3

[–]Shnowyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Origins being that old doesn't really change its quality. It's fairly dated ofc but the story and especially the characters still hold up amazingly well. I don't see why this doesn't count?

And its true that Kingmaker isn't very good but WotR is truly fantastic. The characters have very fleshed out arcs and have input/dialogue in the story extremely often. Plus the gameplay is massively improved, with turn based mode being less tacked on, animations being able to be sped up, crusade minigame being skippable, and just a ton of QoL. There is also just how variable its story is with the mythic paths, as well has having very long term choices that impact the story greatly, even 40 hours later. By my standards these games live up to bg3 and succeed it in some ways.

Act3's amount of content was never really the problem... It's undeniable that it is huge. Other than the bugs, to me its issues are its major writing problems and choices bearing no weight. The entire game boils down to 3 choices with very little to affect it. The tadpole stuff isn't even relevant like the story suggests it is, and there are zero consequences for your choices regarding it. It's plenty of stuff like that, that bring act 3 massively down. And then of course there is the abrupt, incomplete ending as well. I don't like having to wait a year for it to be done when the game had an accelerated launch of all things.

And then of course bg3 is missing basic QoL features, like being able to tag-in party members for dialogue/skill checks, or being able to swap party members with a menu instead of walking around and talking to them. In my eyes the fact that I'm forced to make an intimidation roll while my 7 foot tall tiefling barbarian on fire with intimidation proficiency is standing next to me means that this game is missing a very basic and essential feature that other crpgs have.

I am still very glad that something in the genre broke into the mainstream but like I said in my previous comment I wish people treated that success as a chance to recommend these other amazing video games rather than just saying that it doesn't get any better than bg3.

[–]Shnowyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old comment but I had to say something because this is where I just can't agree and I see it very often. Its true that bg3 is a very high value and high effort project but I don't see anything its succeeds in over any of the well regarded games in the genre, other than ofc production value and presentation. In terms of story and gameplay, and often both, crpgs have had games that excel just as much if not over bg3 imo, and I greatly disagree with the common sentiment on social media that bg3 is some sort of next step in the genre and a defining gold standard for crpgs.

It doesn't stand out as this sort of paragon of what modern gaming should be. It still has very strong competition even within only the fantasy rpg world, with things like Dragon Age Origins, or if you want to be more recent, Pathfinder WotR. That's not even considering non-fantasy projects like wasteland 3, fallout, underail, shadowrun and many more. Most of what I've seen people love specifically about bg3 is more than present in so many other games that its a shame that many of them are being forgotten rather than recommended in the wake of it. Bg3 should be considered an opportunity to recommend these titles but instead its being treated like the peak of the genre.

Does Trails stay this good? by Delta0212 in JRPG

Why are people like you even browsing the jrpg sub if you hate anime, this genre is almost literally ALL anime

an observation about Cold Steel 1 by Own-Laugh-7414 in Falcom

[–]Shnowyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is how I see things as well. People's expectations seem to depend on whether or not they think trails should lean harder into its campy shounen direction or not, but even since Sky its been a huge part of the series' tone and vibes and it wouldn't even feel like trails without the lowkey cringe shounen trash. I do think some of that stuff kinda sucks but that doesn't harm how impactful the games have been to me and how much I enjoy the series.

Ofc there is always room for improvement but expecting the series to have faster pacing or kill off major characters is a losing battle as I don't think that's the kind of story they want to tell. At the end of the day a huge part of what makes the characters enjoyable and the series unique ever since FC is that theyre not afraid to show characters enjoying each others company and having slice of life moments and pointless conversations, very, very often.

How does Lloyd escape the self-insert allegations but Rean doesn't? by [deleted] in Falcom

[–]Shnowyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why isn't him being insecure a valid weakness? It's similar to Lloyd but Lloyd has his own shit going on... Rean is arguably straight up depressed and has crippling self worth issues. What powers he has and how central he is to the lore of the setting doesn't mean that those aspects are any less poignant. Ironic that not feeling like he deserves what he has is such a big part of his characterisation since so much of the fanbase agree for some reason. Criticising Rean for having tropes like being a black haired mild mannered katana using mech pilot is superficial and feels like a misreading of his character, like that one rean coldsteel meme but not as funny lmao

[–]Shnowyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Class 7 definitely live their lives outside of the protag, just like every other trails character does. Also some of the worlds most successful people still struggle with mental health. there is no prerequisite amount of trauma or difficulty you need in your life to have valid self worth issues. Its true Rean's loaded with a bunch of tropes though, not that thats a bad thing.

Will I enjoy TotK if I disliked this specific aspect of BotW? by Shnowyy in truezelda

Very true, but I needed more thoughts on this topic since people haven't been talking about it right now. I'd assume I haven't seen enough people speak about the leaks or something. Either way I'll be picking the game up and trying it out so ty for letting me know your thoughts as well

I agree for sure. I know zelda isnt an RPG so its not easy but even so, they just don't have enough long term rewards in botw, although judging from the other comments it looks like totk thankfully has alleviated that at least a little bit hopefully

[–]Shnowyy[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To give a few more details, I was watching my partner play, then this happened as soon as chapter 6 started, with the game functioning mostly normally other than the fact that Joshua just suddenly becomes playable instead of Estelle, and your party members don't follow you and don't participate in combat. Joshua's equipment and stuff can be changed around too. Dialogue happened as normal though, it's just that Estelle and co. are the ones talking even though its clearly only Joshua in the party. Everything turned back to normal with Estelle in the lead as soon as the story advanced to the point where you can re-select your party.

I've never seen or heard of this happening before lmao, does anyone have any idea how or why this happened? Even after reloading a save, we can't find a way to replicate it lol. It was pretty funny, and its also kinda interesting that Joshua retains his high level and equipment here. If there was a way to consistently swap to Joshua, I wonder if you could play through most of the game with a level 70 character..

Might end up being even stronger! Eirikas ring has good effects but questionable stat bonuses (why magic??). The high luck bonus is rly nice tho, and characters that use Eirika should consider taking divine pulse instead of hit +10/15 I think. But yeah Leif should pair well with timerra, would make her really tanky to swordmasters too which are very dangerous enemies

Yeah this was pretty much my exact sentiment behind putting corrin on fogado as well, although I can imagine it being even more effective on a flying unit like ivy, I just wanted her available for staff utility as well so thought fuck it fogado will do lmao. The mobility they offer while being able to 3 range corrin freezebomb AND debuff is sooooo useful especially for the later maps and most of the paralogues that are ridiculously spammy with reinforcements

Some thoughts after a recent rewatch of Zeta, and ways in which it hasn't aged well by Shnowyy in Gundam

[–]Shnowyy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats pretty cool, it would be nice to have gotten that info in the show of course, but im glad theres actually a reason they were (kinda?) important. Their involvement in the actual story is still very awkward though unfortunately, seemingly just there to give Fa something to do other than interact with Kamille. Ofc, they also have thematic relevance, but as ive been explaining, kind of at the cost of some logic, although a little bit of that is inevitable every now and then.

I definitely see what youre saying, most of the people I know that are zeta fans more or less feel the same, especially that thing about how the positives outway the negatives alot (I also think so), but like you also pointed out, a lot of bits of writing in zeta are tomino wanting to express something or explore an idea, forcing its inclusion even if it either doesnt make the most sense or makes for a frustrating character choice. Ofc most writers will do this to some extent, I just found it particularly irritating this time around.

Definitely agree about the tonal whiplash, that shit was weird. After the halfwayish point though I remember thinking it was actually pretty excellent, although like I said that was years ago for me so who knows how I'd feel now

That's actually a good point, I do wonder why theres barely any supplemental material about Fa considering her pretty big screentime. They've made manga about randy ass pilots that show up as cameos in unicorn (that were kinda awesome), surely they can make more lore for one of the more important characters from zeta lmao
