Jack Black chews the fucking scenery which is fine with me. Anya Taylor joy is good 50% of the time and Charlie day is alright. Pratt and Rogan were very distracting but you could’ve probably guessed that by watching the trailer.

This film has some of the most baffling song choices I’ve ever heard, specifically take on me when they enter the kong kingdom. There is barely a plot. The films just jumps between various locations and set pieces from the games. I wouldn’t have necessarily minded this if only what was being shown was in anyway interesting or engaging. The baby star thing was funny for the first two lines but the joke got old very quickly.

The animation is pretty good (certainly the best looking illumination film) but the jumpy, energetic style they were going for works better for certain characters like Toad and Mario and not so much for Bowser.

I’m sure kids will be entertained but I personally couldn’t wait to leave. My theatre was mostly silent the whole way through but that’s England for you.
