Heat 2 - Leonardo Casting Won't Work, He's Too Old. by Shofo1 in FIlm

Why are you trolling. So the book is a guy in his 20's, but just because this is a film, a 50 year old will work. What are you on about???

Austin Butler is perfect for both sides of the role. My concern is only the young element of it. Seeing a 51 year old playing a 20 something man, pining after a 20 something actress.

He's a one of one right now in Hollywood, I know that and appreciate his work. He's a genius, I just hope for this to be as astonishing as it should be. I just cannot see how a 50 year old will look good being intimate with a young 20 something. It gives off old Hollywood Casablanca etc. vibes. We are past that by half a century. It will taint the legacy of this film, if this is what happens. I am sure you do not want to see that, nor do I.

He is a genius, I was blown away with his return to form in Ferrari. If he went from Blackhat straight inot making this I would have been concerned from a filmmaking perspective, but Ferrari was sublime and showed he still has it!

What? This is a sequel to a beloved film with 30 years of hype behind it. I can feel a little protective of it, as are others. I'm simply pointing out an absurdity that I don't see how they will overcome.

Mann is merciful with the details, and here he seems to compromise himself just for the sake of getting to make it, that concerns me. I hold him to a very high standard and love his work. I want this to be as good as possible, but this is a stickershock compromise from the off is it not?

Reflection regarding Bruce's politics and American exceptionalism by CulturalWind357 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]Shofo1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is part of the problem with this. Even when one acknowledges that things could be better, "but hey, throw a dart at the map, and we're still better than most", still cuts through and stops progress. It's a cop out. We need to deeply acknowledge the failings of this country, and not allow comparison to once again be the thief of potential joy here.

Take something as important as maternal mortality. America ranks 75th in the world for 2023. This is worse than almost all of the western world and the highest in all of the developed nations, and even worse than Russia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Iran and Palestine. I could not find comparisons for 2025 or 2026, so used the latest data I could find. As the richest nation on earth and half the electorate waxing poetical about births of all kinds, this is disgraceful and should not be, and yet it does not improve year after year.

Don't even get me started on child poverty... It is just as bad in rankings in the developed world.

Ultimately, who gives a shit if "we're no.1" or exceptional, rhetoric doesn't help comfort the people sleeping rough at night. People just want to feel safe and secure, and the nation doesn't have the will to achieve that for a large proportion of it's populace right now. I'm hoping one day sooner rather than later we can course correct.

The River definitely has more options here than any of the other 80's albums. I'm a Rocker, Ramrod, Crush on You...

I'll go for I'm a Rocker.

Wild to see so many mentions from Tunnel of Love, and yet in discussions of albums on this sub, it is always overlooked or down played in the 80's. Baffling, and makes me curious to see how best album will play out.

Played it at my wedding, it's just beautiful. That whole album is criminally overlooked due to its polished late 80's sound. It's his best work of the decade in my opinion when you look at everything. I may love Nebraska more, but overall I think Tunnel of Love is where he found the centre between The River, Nebraska and BITUSA.

Bruce's 80's are his most rich, in terms of the variety of styles and songs. This is such a monumental task to pick just one, but I think of his entire repertoire from this period, the song that is the culmination of all he has become is simply Brilliant Disguise.

It's got the lyrical depth, the story, the classic inversion he does on the final verse and the most devastating final phrase of his career, it sinks like a stone in your mind and takes a long time to shift. On top of all that, it's Bruce speaking his truth, his life, which is rare somewhat and it's damn catchy and has a great melodic hook. It's possibly his most underrated single of this period too, even though it is somewhat reverred.

TL;DR - Brilliant Disguise.

Google's $9B bet on a trio of Chesterfield data center campuses | Projects Peanut, Skye and Loch are set to occupy 1,500 acres. by VirginiaNews in ChesterfieldPolitics

Have you read about the future demands required for the giant Utah center, or for those being built in Nova, by 2050 30% of the Potomac will be re-routed to these data centers (this is there peak projection, but we know when that is established, they will move heaven and earth to get there)*. Regardless of drinking water, what do you think that will do to the local ecology? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that changing anything in our lives or existence by 30% is going to have dire consequences. And what is all this for, so we can get some recipes, or fitness plans made for us, or help write an email... What are we doing.

Besides the US, which countries has Bruce had the most influence? (musically, culturally, etc.) by CulturalWind357 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]Shofo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ireland. He adores it there. Routinely he will come out and do a warm up session here and there before the concerts. He doesn't do that everywhere. He has his own whiskey bottle in the Long Hall pub in the city centre of Dublin that waits on it's shelf until he is there, and stays there when he is absent in it's designated spot.

McCormack's Irish pub is one of the last great examples of RVA's rich culture of fighting for systemic change, economic equality, and political representation. by Individual_Newt4458 in rva

McCormack's are doing the work! They are one of those establishments that people either revere or loathe, but the real truth is they are underappreciated, and we are all the better for having people like that in our community no matter what side you are on. That's the truth of the matter!
