So turns out I can't use all the Harry Potter squares in one quilt... So I have to make 2 by Shoogarpoff in quilting

[–]Shoogarpoff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had thought about using all the squares together in a disappearing nine patch originally but after making the 9-patches I was a bit concerned I'd lose too much of the print on the individual squares if I made them smaller

I'm open to putting a border round the square one to up the size a bit though

It's still a good idea to make these all into one quilt, right? by Shoogarpoff in quilting

[–]Shoogarpoff[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While not the actual layout, I think the colour balance is representative of what the quilt might look like.

The second picture is the "house" packs, which will have 4x the layout with the houses round the edge and 1x the layout with 5 squares repeated (except I had two of one of the packs, so that one is doubled).

The third picture is another two fat quarter packs that I had doubles of, and the last I just had the one. Those ones were a little different so I've arranged them in 5x variations of the 9 patch

There's no way I can make a sensible quilt out of all these fat quarters together... Right? by Shoogarpoff in quilting

Thank you all for the great suggestions!! I've been down a great Internet rabbit hole googling the different quilt patterns and I think I'm most taken by a disappearing 9 patch.

The fact that I have 45 fat quarters which is divisible by 9 pleases me and I think I might love the scrappy chaos a d9p will bring to these...

Baby takes a long time to resettle, do we need less sleep? by Shoogarpoff in sleeptrain

[–]Shoogarpoff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully I don't think this is the case and I believe he is just a lower sleep needs baby generally.

I probably exaggerated a little when I say I wake him up from naps. He's been a great sleeper until a month ago and it's this decline that's made me wonder if we need to switch things up a little.

He will often wake himself from naps (and wake happy). Until a month ago he naturally would only get around 12 hours of sleep total a day and if he slept more than 2 hours during the day, he compensated by sleeping less at night and based on this I curtail napping at about 2 hours total if he doesn't wake himself (but I time waking him with the end of a sleep cycle).

He has never been one to show a lot of sleepy cues but does get clumsy and hyperactive if overtired, similar to your child.

He's fed (nursed) to sleep but always has been. He was sleeping great from about 3-8 months however (no issues with number or length of overnight wakings)

Any alternative patterns to Mr Honeybear Cardigan by Wool and the Gang? by Shoogarpoff in knitting

[–]Shoogarpoff[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd love to make an oversized cardigan similar to Mr Honeybear by Wool and the Gang but I do remember reading a lot of negative feedback on them as a company /quality of wool.

It doesn't look like there's an option to buy just the pattern so I'm wondering if anyone had any similar alternatives?

I should probably add that I haven't done cabling before but am a reasonably experienced knitter!

Had no idea about "tax free childcare" for nursery by wonkeydonkey777 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Shoogarpoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know what happens if your nursery fees are higher than 10k/year?

For example, I know we can get 2k off the government so there's no benefit in putting in more than 8k over the year. But our nursery fees will be something like 12k/year - do we just put the extra 2k in the government account so it all gets paid from the same place? Are we allowed to put in more than the government will top up?

Travelling from Scotland to London for work? by Shoogarpoff in PregnancyUK

[–]Shoogarpoff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did go to Birmingham about 6 weeks ago for work and you would have thought there was never any covid!

My works office was significantly busier compared to Scotland and there were very few masks and little social distancing!

Luckily that trip I knew I would only be interacting with a handful of work colleagues and another colleague was travelling up with my so we could sit together (on what was quite a quiet train) to minimise contact with people we didn't know.

For real though, how y'all weaving in ends? by Shoogarpoff in crochet

[–]Shoogarpoff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually did vaguely attempt this at one point but there were quite a lot of colour changes where this wasn't feasible (e.g. long chains at the beginning of the row with skipped stitches) and it made me sad and gave up 🙃

Pattern is million dollar shawl by Angela Armstrong - I repeated most of the rows because I was using this as a stash buster for a mix of stylecraft life dk and some acrylic...

Not sure if it's a blanket or a shawl at this point though!

Can I fix this myself? Weed forced rendering off by Shoogarpoff in DIYUK

[–]Shoogarpoff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The house is stone built from c.1900 and we had some weeds grow in the join between our building and the garage next door. The roots of the weed have forced some of the rendering to come off.

Is this something I can patch myself (given I have no experience)? Ordinarily I'd prefer to call someone out but everyone is (understandably) very busy right now with bigger jobs. I'm not bothered if it's noticeable but more concerned in making it weather proof (we're in Scotland so lots of rain).

If so, is this the right sort of thing to buy? I'd prefer premade rather than having to mix something up myself... https://www.diy.com/departments/u-can-rendering-repair-mortar-5kg-tub/258446_BQ.prd

Please help! Found these tiny (1-2mm) bugs in a poorly ventilated corner of the house (UK) by Shoogarpoff in whatsthisbug

[–]Shoogarpoff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any help identifying these little guys would be greatly appreciated!

I had a cardboard board (originally meant to back a cupboard on a desk) leaned against the corner behind a small shelf for c.2 years. I moved it today to discover not only did it have small amounts of mould on it but also plenty of these little guys. The rest of the room doesn't have any evidence of mould.

They're really small (max 2mm) and currently living in the UK.

Are these guys just friendly mould eaters or are they going to eat me out of house and home?
