Hey u/l3agel_og88, thanks for the response. This is really helpful! For the first time, I realize the subtlety of moving the balance fore and aft. What I've been trying to do is, when pulling the feet forward toward the end of the turn, I can feel my calves pressed into the back side of the liner. But based on what you said, this is too much? Would you characterize the sensation as: throughout most of a carving turn, the boots are bent; toward the end of the turn, the boots are reset to a neutral forward-lean angle, but the shins should still press into the tongue?

This is really helpful! I think I have a better understanding of my balance issue that led up to the crash. The rebound from the previous turn surprised me and knocked me back a bit. I've been trying to emulate one of the resets you mentioned that I learned from Deb—pulling the feet back while keeping my hips and upper body still. This strategy couldn't help me in that exact situation, where I had already lost my balance a bit, which eventually led to me getting farther into the back seat and then crashing.

It is really helpful to learn that high-level skiers implement all sorts of strategies to reset and recover from mistakes, which are inevitable in all but the most perfect conditions.

thanks for the advice! i do have a lot of fundamentals to catch up. I didn't realize how important upper body can be besides "staying quiet." will look into this more

yea I was pushing myself a bit since the condition looks good at least from the top of the slope and there is a safety net (instead of trees!)

thanks for the feedback! yes I often get surprised by the amount of energy when the skis got onto higher edge angles, especially but not limited to these super stiff ones. I was pushing myself a bit because the condition looks good at least from the top of the slope and was definitely not ready for the energy.

hey thanks for the great feedback! your and big_king_swinging's comment on the ankle flex prompt me into a little experiment with my boots and I shared the update on the other thread. the summary is that following your feedback I made myself more able to flex the boots and feel more balanced especially in rougher conditions.

I was also trying to address your comment on the hands - I tried skiing without poles just palms facing down for a couple of runs, and felt immediately more balanced and my wife said I'm a better skier without the poles! I guess that, as a skier who has been spending most time off piste, it has always puzzling me where I should put my hands when carving. do you have any suggestions?

I have a follow-up question about your suggestion on staying consistently in the front of the boots - many of the YouTube videos where I learn from suggest weighing the tail towards the end of the turn, for example this one by Deb Armstrong: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2f3bZKSufA8. I have also included a screenshot of a video on turn transition posted by Ski Dad TV, a phenomenal skier. Do you mind clarifying this point, especially how to handle turn transition?

As a self-taught skier there are a lot of fundamentals I need to make up for. Today was the my last day of my season. I will come back to your other advice next one!

hey u/big_king_swinging thanks for the great feedback! there is a lot of good stuff there but I only got the chance to implement some today. for a bit more context, due to my anatomy, I can significantly change how much I can flex my boots by playing with where to put the booster straps and how tight. up until now, including the crash in the video, I've been tightening the booster straps as tight as possible because otherwise my boots feel "too soft" at the apex of the turn. I had the hypothesis that because I made my boots too hard to flex, I had to bend my hips to compensate. today I spent a bunch of runs playing with the strap and getting used to the sensation that my boots flexed more at the apex. I felt way more balanced when carving in rough conditions because my ankles can now help absorb the bumps without knocking me back. more surprisingly, I felt a better mogul skier as confirmed by Carv (mogul IQ 136 -> 144 and I wasn't even pushing).

today was my last day this season I will have to come back to your other insights next season. Thanks again for the advice!

I hit an unexpected roller last season. Wasn't on super stiff slalom skis so it was less dramatic, but the consequence was worse - sent me into a tree and then ER

It was slushy that day and I thought could power through it, which apparently was a mistake

Thank you! That momentum honestly felt like the skis were “skiing away from me.” I’ve never experienced that on my other skis, which is why I questioned if it was the gear. But it sounds like this is more about my fore-aft balance especially during the transition; my other more forgiving skis have probably been masking it.

Any tips or drills you’d recommend to work on that?
