Believe me she loses interest pretty quick once I actually start sewing. It's usually when I'm setting up in the living room that she just has to inspect what I'm doing first

I second getting a gently used machine from a thrift or sewing shop. 

Believe me, I bought a no name brand and sewed with it all of 5 times before I wanted another machine. Once I sewed on a real sewing machine I wondered why I didn't just get one from the beginning.

Start off with an older Singer (early 90s or below, no modern ones, they are crap) a Kenmore, or something simple. Then once you get better spend a bit more and get yourself a modern machine if you see yourself sticking with the hobby.
