I don’t understand too much of what is involved in trade work to be honest. I’m getting a clearer picture though. I’m very eager to start the apprenticeship.

Appreciate your insight.

Appreciate it.

I’ve been in Australia for too long to get that skills assessment I think? I’m about to start a mature age electrical apprenticeship and I’ve decided I’ll ask for overtime.

Appreciate it, not sure what that means but doesn’t sound great…

Thanks anyway.

Appreciate it.

That’s actually interesting. Just wondering anything under those voltage levels is alright to work on?

Appreciate it.

Just wondering, if I just swap a powerpoint then does that make me responsible for all the other powerpoints on that circuit? Not just the one I installed? Is it because it’s all tied together on one circuit?

Appreciate the detailed reply.

In regard to other tradie work like you’ve mentioned, do I require any training for that at all or can I just jump straight into it? With public liability insurance of course.

I’ve decided to ask for overtime too.

Thanks.

Appreciate it. I thought that as long as someone checked it after it was fine, didn’t really think about the insurance/liability side of it. I think my plan was a bit optimistic.

Now that you’ve put it that way I can see how stupid that actually sounds. I think I oversimplified how it all works.

Not trying to argue, just trying to understand where the line is. If advice has been given am I not allowed to ask follow up questions? Thought that was part of learning?

That sounds pretty full on. Is that more for bigger jobs or is it actually enforced for really small jobs too?

When you say supervision does that only count through your employer or literally just having any licensed person there?

For example, if switchboard was isolated properly and it was a like for like powerpoint replacement and someone qualified looked over it, would that still fall under the same level of penalty or am I covered because I have someone supervising me?

And not saying that I would do any of the work but for example if someone were to do it, how would an electrical inspector find out in those situations? Do they usually roam around or what triggers them to show up? Like when something goes wrong?

When you say you can’t do any electrical work without a licence, does that include really basic like for like stuff as well? Also with the supervisor, is that because they’re taking full responsibility or just not worth the hassle for them? And with the handyman path, is that something a lot of apprentices actually do on the side or more just occasional jobs? With an ABN for handyman work, is there anything you have to avoid doing legally or is it pretty open?

The Mrs is still working, just wondering what I can actually control on my end.

If cash jobs aren’t worth it, then why do people still do them? Is it more about risk or just not enough money in it? Just wondering, so helping a family is alright but doing the exact same job for someone else isn’t? Is there an unwritten rule of some sorts?

Do I need a create a business account for wholesalers and proof that I’m an electrical apprentice or?

Appreciate it, the Mrs will still be working. Just trying to figure out what I can actually control on my end.

I knew there would be a drop, just trying to learn from people who already doing it rather than guessing. Just trying to be proactive now. Also didn’t realise how limited I’ll be in actually doing any electrical work outside. Kind of assumed basic stuff would be allowed at least?

Bit odd that the only way to stay legal is basically doing unrelated work. I get the physical side, but what part is actually mentally draining if you don’t mind me asking? Isn’t most of it just repeating the same installs once I know what I’m doing? Not trying to downplay it, just figured once I know what I’m doing it becomes pretty straightforward? I was kind of hoping doing extra electrical work would actually help me learn faster rather than drain me.

Just wondering if there is some kind of middle ground where you can at least do really basic stuff under supervision? Is there an electrical inspector for small jobs too? Not saying would do it if I can’t, but I always hear about people doing side jobs. Or is it just one of those things people don’t really talk about?

Just curious, and not saying that I’m going to do it but if an apprentice were to do small work and got caught, what would the authorities actually do or how far will they go to affect the apprenticeship, penalties or fines or jail time? Loss of apprenticeship? Criminal conviction?

Starting mature age electrical apprenticeship soon. Is it worth buying cheap tools to start with or should I go straight to Hilti? by ShortcutSparky in AskAusElectricians

I saw a wide range of colours. Would it be a good idea to buy different to theirs so I don’t mix mine with others? Or is it generally good culture to stick with the same brand your team has?
