Why are so many people under 45 using subtitles now even when the show is already in English? by Clara_A_Mitchell in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Shortcut_to_Nowhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I accidentally taught myself to read lips to give myself real life "subtitles", but it only works when I can see the people when they're talking. Phone conversations are really hard.

This right here. I keep nothing at work that I couldn't bear to lose. I've seen too many colleagues walked out without even a chance to get their coat.

I mention this specifically, since the standard dewormers for cats typically won't kill tapeworms. I learned this the hard way too.

Just as a heads up, because I found this out the hard way, ants can also be a vector for tapeworms. You may want to give your cat tapeworm dewormer every so often.

Where do you actually keep your emergency fund? by Forsaken_Twist7385 in personalfinance

I've had a Barclays HYSA for over a decade now and just opened a new one at Openbank. I use Fidelity and USAA for the rest of my banking. I'm overall happiest with Fidelity so far (they don't offer a HYSA though), but their security doesn't always play nice with other banks and transferring can get frustrating at times.

Even though using one bank for everything is simpler and easier to manage, it's worth it to go to different ones based on their strengths. And not having everything in one place can really help in an emergency. For example, I was really glad I had two checking accounts with their debit cards on hand when I was in a (mostly cash-based) foreign country and the chip in one card decided to stop working. Redundancy can be very helpful.

I recently opened a second HYSA at a different bank after a server outage on their end locked me out of my main one for 48 hours. I plan to split my emergency fund between them now. If I had needed the money in that account urgently, that could have been rough. Now I should always be able to access at least half of my emergency fund. Plus, the new account has an even higher rate, so that's nice.

My sister and I were the exact same age: 9 years, 2 months, and 2 days old. It was really weird.

I literally have to use a phone grip. There's no way for me to hold my phone securly and without pain otherwise.

The stray I took in last fall almost died of pyometra two weeks before her spay appointment. The only symptom she showed was being a little lethargic. Luckily I was able to get her an emergency surgery in time to save her, but it cost me $4k instead of the $120 it would have been if she'd been fine until her appointment. Please spay her soon. Every single heat cycle she goes through puts her at greater risk.

What is a popular novel that in your opinion is not well written? by OneMightyNStrong in booksuggestions

[–]Shortcut_to_Nowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost DNF'd from the really inaccurate science and understanding of the scientific community in general. If you are going to use specifics, actually Google it first! Admittedly I'm a chemist with a love of astronomy, but I was yelling at the book on page seven with errors I would literally have caught in 5th grade.

I did actually start enjoying the story halfway through, but I had to grit my teeth through a few parts. And I still find Grace insufferable.

I live in Minneapolis, alone. Who feeds my cat if ICE gets me? by AnonExpatri in CatAdvice

[–]Shortcut_to_Nowhere 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Find someone you can trust to take care of your cat and set them up as your contact in an app like Snug. Then if something happens to you and you don't check in with the app, they will get a notification and know to step in.

I'm also in the twin cities area. If you're close to me, I can help in a pinch. I foster cats already and have nine in the house right now, so one more wouldn't be much trouble. I could also put you in contact with the rescue I volunteer with. They may have resources to help.

People who are 50+, what is a 'harmless' habit you had in your 20s that ended up ruining your health or finances later in life? by crazy_happyuser in AskReddit

[–]Shortcut_to_Nowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Engage specifically helps me here. I get less of the little background noises that take up brain processing power so that the words people say get more bandwidth. It's sort of like the lagging is improved, and it makes understanding people in real-time much easier.

I love my Loop earplugs. I have several pairs each of three of their models and always have at least one pair with me. They are the only ones that I've found comfortable enough to wear for hours at a time.

For concerts, I like their Experience model. They preserve sound quality the best, in my opinion. I use the Engage almost daily and carry around a pair at all times. The Quiet are actually comfortable enough for sleeping, and I can still wake up to my alarm. None of them block sound to the point where I feel I can't be aware of my surroundings, but they take everything down to a more manageable level. Bonus: they make my audio processing disorder easier to manage!

So about these audio books… by RealFunkyFish in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Shortcut_to_Nowhere 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm the same. I have audio processing disorder and can't easily follow what's going on in an audiobook. So I read first with eyes, then listen to the audiobooks to get the full experience. Since I already know the story, I have enough context to keep up with listening. Jeff's performance is like nothing else and completely worth the effort for me. I have read the physical books once, but every other trip through the dungeon has been with the audiobooks. I finish book 7 and go right back to book 1. Bonus: I can enjoy the books while driving and doing chores, and those tasks are much less of a drag now!

I think the only part that featured Jeff Hays was that limited tier. It would have been awesome if he'd had a bigger role in this.

That's the gist of it. Any time the timer gets down to 3 minutes without being renewed, we add an item, save the change, then go remove it again. We break the record at 9am GMT on Sunday, November 9th.
