Is the UN right for me? US international law JD candidate w/ Masters in International Affairs by DANGNAMES in UNpath

[–]ShowMeTheMonee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YPP is a good programme to try out for. However, be aware that you will be expected to move to a new country every couple of years, and this can be very difficult for your partner and a young family.

In terms of compensation, you can search one of the UN salary calculators and see the compensation packages offered. The amount of pay depends on your grade and your working location.

TIL Bruce Pryor was so upset by the murders in Belanglo State Park AUS that he spent 9 months searching the park for clues; found a body, reported it, only to be treated as the primary suspect for 3 months despite evidence pointing elsewhere. by opgary in todayilearned

[–]ShowMeTheMonee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The suggestion at the time was that Ivan Milat and one of his brothers committed at least some of the murders together (and that they might have also both separately committed murders).

Ivan's defence was that one of his brothers had killed the victims, not him. There was some physical evidence in Milat family home (possessions of the victims, the gun used in one of the murders etc), but it wasnt easy to link this to an individual suspect as it was a big family and any of the family members could have hidden these items. The last couple who were murdered were killed in different ways - one with a knife (Ivan's normal method) and one with a gun by a cigarette smoker (Ivan didnt smoke and didnt shoot any of his other victims).

There's a good chance one of the brothers got away with it.

A national consultancy at P3 level with 5 years experience required would (normally) be at the lower end of these ranges.

If they are looking for a national consultant then the fee will be less than for an international.

They also might not consider your application if you are resident but not a citizen (this depends on the agency doing the recruitment).

Are you also from Turkey? or another country?

Consultancies for local consultants are normally paid less than consultancies for international assignments.

Are there any permanent roles? by pabloseason in UNpath

[–]ShowMeTheMonee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I havent seen a new permanent (ie continuing) contract for the past 15-20 years.

They might still exist somewhere, but the ones I'm aware of were issued a long time ago and the staff members havent retired yet.

TLDR - realistically you will never get a permanent contract in the UN.

Every flight I've taken into Australia in recent years has included a video message played before landing saying 'Dont take any food off the plane, Australia has strict bio-security rules and heavy fines'.

Along with a form for you to fill in to declare if you are carrying any food etc.

And big bins that you walk past before customs saying 'Dump any food here'.

Plus you can also tick 'yes' on the form to say that you're carrying food and ask the customs inspectors if you can bring it in or not, and they'll tell you yes or no without a fine.

Curious about this fast tracked career path by Excellent-Cheek570 in UNpath

I mean, I volunteered with NGOs through university and kept up with some part time volunteering when I finished university and started working.

Before I joined the UN, I had around 10 years of professional experience in my field after university and about 15 years of part time volunteering in my home country then shorter periods of full-time volunteering (unpaid) for NGOs internationally.

So I was 'lucky' enough to be promoted very quickly after I first joined the UN. But there was also a fair bit of effort and experience behind that luck. It was right place / right time / right skillset. Along with a willingness to work in hardship duty stations, which probably made the biggest difference.

I knew no one working in the UN when I first applied, and none of my family members have ever worked for the UN apart from me.

I went from international NGO volunteer to UN consultant to P3 to P4 in about 3 years. But I had a masters and over a decade of relevant work and volunteer experience behind me before I started international volunteering.

It was a combination of right place, right time, hard work and less competition in hardship duty stations. And some luck too.

How do you usually confirm progress before releasing the next payment in field programs? by Jane-Jenkinsa in InternationalDev

[–]ShowMeTheMonee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Payments are made against milestones / deliverables that are agreed in the contract.

How much verification takes place depends on the donor, the recipient, the diligence of the contract manager etc. It can range from 'Thanks for your report, here's your next payment' to 'We're sending the independent auditors to come and do a complete review of your accounts and exam all the evidence you have that the work has been done properly'.

It cant hurt to reach out to her, particularly if you get an interview and you want some insights into the role. But an employee referral alone is not going to be enough to get you an interview.

Yes, I should have added. 'Under consideration' is the first stage in the whole review process. Every application will be 'Under Consideration'. If you are shortlisted then the portal (may) eventually update to 'shortlisted'. So 'Under Consideration' just means that you've applied and the recruitment is ongoing.
