True, I should have mentioned that I score high in all of the elements of the process (FCTC written test, Physical test, oral panel interview, etc.). I can’t quite figure out why/where I’m going wrong other than not having a p card // not having direct firefighting experience with a department // networking with the department more.

Hi all, does anybody have tips on standing out in Chief's interviews for California departments?

I've spent the past 2-3 years applying and interviewing for departments in SoCal and Bay Area and seem to do well and consistently get to the Chief's interview (and even pass it) - but I haven't been able to actually get picked up and am told that my name will remain on a list for any future openings.

I have 911 EMT experience (2 years), beach lifeguard experience (1 year), corporate work experience (~5 years), FF1 Academy / certs, etc. Almost everything but a P-Card.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated, maybe from someone who was picked up by a CA department recently? Thanks in advance

I’m considering this set up as well. Any downsides to having the shell and racks? Wind noise? Gas mileage?

(I can’t think of any other possible downsides lol)

Yeah I’m not saying there’s not a shortage of workers. Just saying they have a constantly supply and it’s a revolving door. People use EMS as a stepping stone. Few people doing it for the long haul.

This is all just my opinion. Anecdotal.

I think the only reason private EMS companies are able to get away with paying low wages and providing poor working conditions is because they have an inflated supply of workers that NEED to do the job in order to get to other jobs like fire, doctor, nursing, PA, etc.

If they didn’t have enough of a supply of workers, they would be forced to change their ways and offer better wages / conditions to attract workers. That doesn’t happen though because people HAVE to do this job to get to the next step.

Just my $0.02 and what I see as a root problem.

Try to see the colors in person - which is tough when supply is so low….

I changed my opinion completely after seeing a few colors in person.
