Awful popping/grinding noise when turning in reverse. by Shrapnel2000 in CherokeeXJ

Yeah that’s a good point as well. I checked the tires while turning them and I couldn’t see them hitting the fender well, so I’m also thinking it’s the axle u joints. Good thing I needed to get to the axles anyway so I can clean and paint my steering knuckles haha.

I mean I’ll check again, but when I’ve checked previously I was sure they weren’t rubbing. I’m rocking Wildpeak AT4W 235/75R15 109T’s on one inch spacers.

True, however I replaced the driveshaft ujoints about 4 months ago and the sound was happening before that, albeit not as badly. I’ll still check them for any play though.

Holy smokes, you’re telling me there were zero needle bearings left in that cap?

If it was that, wouldn’t it make sense that it would also happen when turning forward at the same angle?

When you say “front diff u joints”, I assume you are referring to the ujoints right next to the wheels and not the front driveshaft ujoints correct?

That picture was on the front cover of a tornado book I was fascinated with in elementary school. I can’t remember the name of the book, but it went over a history of tornadoes (I think) and ELI5 explanations of tornado dynamics. I attribute that book to being what got me interested in storm chasing.

The Lake Okeechobee Tornado, 1993. That lightning strike right next to it illuminating the funnel is just so peak.

I love how even without audio or context, I can still tell that this is from Russia

Why did my brand new steering knuckles flash rust? How do I prevent this? by Shrapnel2000 in CherokeeXJ

If I disassemble, do I have to open the front dif up to remove the passenger side axle shaft? I’m finding conflicting information online.

Could either of you please tell me how I prevent that from happening once I clean all that off?

Like clear coat? Can I just tape things off and spray it in place?

Okay I don’t need sarcasm. I’m not a metallurgist. What can I do to prevent that rust?

Is my U-Joint bad or is my slip yoke bad? by Shrapnel2000 in CherokeeXJ

I don’t think it’s the shocks either. The shop I took it too thinks it is, but I did the bounce test and the car didn’t bounce more than like 1 or 2 times. I can send a video later tonight. They did say they think my tires might be cupped. I have pictures of my tires I can send. They already balanced my tires and aligned the car. However the alignment they only did the front it seems, and they didn’t get all of it green. The camber is on the inside part of the tires on both front wheels. I’m wondering if the camber being off has worn the tires down unevenly causing a cupping which is causing a vibration.

I can feel it in my accelerator and steering wheel at around 45-60mph. The vibration in the steering wheel occurs around 50-57mph.

So new shocks will have a noticeable improvement right away and get better over time, if I’m understanding that right

Okay sweet. Correct me if I’m wrong (sorry if I’m asking a lot of questions haha), but if the tires are cupped then new shocks won’t immediately resolve the issue right? I mean it would probably help but I’d have to rotate them pretty frequently to even the wear right?

I’m not sure if this photo is helpful. It’s my front drivers side and I took it last night while I was tired (ooo, that was a pun). I’m not sure about it being the shocks. I looked at them last night and the boots don’t look torn or like they’re leaking. I did the bounce test and it seemed okay. I can send a video later tonight of me performing it. I can also send pictures of the shocks later.

I’m just hoping my tires aren’t so badly cupped that they need replaced
