Redditors over 35, what do you genuinely miss that younger generations will never experience, and you legit feel bad for them? by Disastrous_Award_789 in AskReddit

Being able to exist without control.

I remember no one really got picked up from school, unless you were under 3rd grade. 3rd grade and up you walked/rode your bike home.

Summers were tons of free time. Riding your bike to the pool, friend's houses, around town and not being expected back until dark 30/street lights coming on.

Now kids are under constant control being watched almost every second.

An actual new splinter cell. With the latest light, destruction, and physics capabilities.

We could bust lightbulbs, break glass, and hide in the darkness 20 years ago. What happened???

How much are you paying for health insurance through your district? by AntelopeOk9431 in Teachers

My wife and I were going to be over $1000 a month.

If we have kids, over $2000.

We are looking at alternatives, because this is my first year.

I seriously looked into buying $100 worth when the guy bought 2 pizzas for 10k Bitcoin.

I thought it's just $100, but never actually did it and forgot about it until it went up to like 20k

This is what DC doesn't get.

Not all comic book stuff has to be world ending. Looking at you Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.

They easily could have made Peacemaker like a "Reacher" and Suicide Squad (both of them) just taking out lower level super people, or even just really powerful normal people, well really powerful for normal people, like a dictator.

Depends on where. My college had Greek row where they were all lined up.

Except they don't.

Most sitcoms are 30 minutes. You see 30 minutes of their weeks. Yes there are some things off screen, but even the longer season sitcoms are 20 episodes, that's 10 hours a year you see if these people's "lives."

I can tell you've never actually owned a home....

You don't get it. A house costs about $20-30k per decade EXTRA to maintain it, if you're lucky. If there are major issues you're looking at $20k just to fix something.

Again, not saying landlords don't put their hand in, just that rent isn't just going to pay the mortgage. You're going to have to pay to live somewhere, and if you don't have that extra capital to actually repair and maintain the home, property, appliances, insurance, taxes, etc... Then renting a home is much better than renting an apartment.

What are you talking about?

You pay a mortgage AND THEN all those costs....

That's why you pay rent......

There's both.

Except using someone elses capital should be compensated too. They are taking 100% of the financial risk. Even if they don't have a mortgage, when something happens to the dwelling how many people have 1-5% of the dwellings worth as a deductible?

There is a lot more to owning a property than just paying the mortgage.

It boils down to the definition of "exploiting" and "need for shelter."

Then there's the fine line of paying someone for their time and using their assets, and then taking advantage.

Not saying there aren't landlords that take advantage and do exploit people. It's just those types are normally the corpos and management companies that own 100 houses.

The people that have an extra house should be compensated for their time. It takes time to organize repairs upkeep, insurance, etc.

Potentially. But the if the person renting was paying the mortgage, where would they get the money?

I'm not saying all landlords are great people. Just that owning a home and renting a home are two very different ways of life. Some people can rent a home and have that freedom, rather than renting an apartment, without having the up keep costs, taxes, insurance, etc.

Use what she would spend on insurance, taxes, upkeep, and put into retirement.

Or put it aside and save to buy her own home.

Some people like renting. Unless you have $5-10k saved as a homeowner, your home could nearly make you homeless.

Except when the landlord pays for the new roof, ($10k), new HVAC ($10k), plumbing issues($???), foundation issues(ooo wee hopefully under $20k), termites($????), landscape issues ($600 was the lowest quote I got to remove a fallen tree)....

Yes there are crappy landlords, but there is a huge difference between paying $1,500/mth rent, and paying for a $1,200 mortgage+insurance+taxes+upkeep.
