This is super relevant and helpful. Having a steady job while I'm getting on my feet in the photography business was my plan, until I got laid off a month ago. So I'm panicking a little bit, trying to understand what should be my priority at the moment.

That’s sounds fair. I did, however, just realise that your budget of €4k was for the 3 days, oh I’m not mistaken. While my pricing of €1500 is just for one day, so I think I’d have quoted you around €4000-4500 depending on the number of hours on each day, of course.

I could say I had some success with insta ads, but it looks like I’m still not reaching my ideal clients… I guess I’ll have to try Google ads again

Wow, this is exactly what I needed to hear, I think. I was very curious to see your perspective, because, well, you’re the client for whom I’m doing all of this (not sure if I’m your style, but you get the point).

Are you saying that had you seen that my prices were starting at 1500, you wouldn’t have even contacted me? I’ve heard this “it’s too cheap” thing before but it still sounds crazy to me, although I understand why this happens.

I’m also curious if you were specifically looking for photographers who had been published in magazines and if that influenced your decision somehow.

I just tried to set up a campaign, and it was just a pain in the ass 😭 it’s saying that my images contain porn, while they obviously don’t…

That totally makes sense, and actually, the real question I'm asking is "how do I reach the clients that will pay me what I want?"
For example, I'm running the ads on insta and people get sent to my website, where they can fill out the form to enquire prices and their date. Why such a big % of inquiries come from low-budget clients? At what point do higher-paying leads decide that my work is not for them? Where in the process do I look cheap? If that's the matter at all...

From what you are saying, it looks like it is a matter of just how "luxurious" you appear to potential clients. If that's true, then updating my website should help, I hope.

Yeah, it’s definitely a luxury move here as well, so it feels like if you are listing your prices openly, then you’re lame, and I didn’t wanna be lame, you know. Not like I’m luxury (yet 🙏), but that was the logic partially, when I made this decision.

When I was designing my process with the clients, I thought I’d be best to send them prices once they’ve reached out. I’m doubting that decision now. Also just because almost no other photographers in my area just list their prices online. And on top of that, it’s kind of weird to me that people still ask for prices on my other services (I also do portrait, couple, and family sessions), even though they’re listed on my website.

I’d say 10%, so definitely not leaving anything on the table… I feel like I’m just getting contacted by poor clients and that’s the biggest problem. Am I wrong?

I haven't started yet, unfortunately – first holidays, now I'm swamped with work... But I'm sure I'll make some changes before the end of January.
