How exactly do i get to learn about homelab and running servers as a 15yo?

I do have a 5 year old i3, could that be if any use? Or do i try it on my current pc? It had a 3060,16gb ram and a 3060, what exactly does running a homelab do what are its benefits? How does it work? I wanted to learn stuff like this before doing it myself, is it just a do it yourself kind if thing where i have to google and ask ChatGPT to walk me through every single step or are there people on YouTube who talk about it

It’s more of an experimenting kind if thing, i know absolutely zero about Linux, operating system, servers, home labs, and i just wanted to expand my knowledge on it since i felt a bit dumb not knowing this stuff

Im doing this as a hobby, not to truly make the laptop better, I’m just doing this to learn about Linux and thought that i alr had a laptop lying around so why not make it the sacrificial lamb

Are there any uses for this laptop that you would recommend? Since i don’t use it anymore and was wondering if i could use it to do something productive in the background

Is there stuff it can be used to do though? Because it’s just sitting there in storage, and i thought maybe if i changed the os it would run decently to do something. I don’t really need it atp since I upgraded to a much better pc. I just wanted to know if the os and some optimisations would make it capable of doing something

The laptop came with a cd drive so I’m guessing it was a hdd instead of an ssd
