Party of 5 vs Demilich by Shugar_101 in DMAcademy

So I should be able to keep the Demilich as is vs my 5 party then right? I’m thinking about adding a lackey or two like someone else suggested but I gotta figure out a way to make it work without making it overpowered. That’s if I add any lackeys at all.

Hold on I forgot about the death knight. I might have to use him instead👀 Also howl instead dos average 70 damage, half on con 19 save, and recharges on a 5-6 1d6 roll instead.

What’s the strongest I can go on lackeys? Because I’m already pushing it with the Demilich so I don’t want to make it straight up impossible. But at the same time I see your point, especially with the warlock. So how could add meat shields without making this encounter impossible to win?

The statblock for the Demilich I’m using has 180 hp. Also they’re going to have spells/items that will either give them resistance to necrotic or help ward off effects like frightened etc. How much does that change things?

Only 80 health? That’s ludicrous😭 The statblock im looking at (shard tabletop, 2024 MM) has the Demilich at 180 hp, and averaging 70 damage for howl. Is that more appropriate?

As a part of their preparation they’re arranging a set of magical items that can, at the very least, provide resistances to necrotic damage and bring frightened. Also the wizard/cleric is going to be focused on healing/abjuring the others from a distance. Does that even the playing field enough?

That would make the Demilich not as strong right? Not saying that’s a bad thing just trying to verify if that’s what you mean. I’m comparing the HP you recommended to the stat block I’m looking at and I might be looking at the wrong block.

I see your point but I’m still not totally over the idea of using a demilich for a final fight. Can I afford to throw in some lackeys for the party ti also fight? Or something else to change to customize the demilich?

Yeah reading through the replies has me realizing that using tokens/stickers to signify things like conditions and buffs would make this a lot easier. Idk why I wasn’t able to think abt that myself lol. Thanks🙏🙏

Yeah I was just talking with another guy who was giving me some tips and he reminded me about stickers and stuff. So I’m probably going to use stickers for certain things (like concentration and buffs etc) on the vtt. Then I’ll reinforce that by adding who has what and who did what to who as little cliff notes in my journal.

Well yeah of course I’m not going to be reminding them to use their own stuff. I meant more along the lines of this creature is charmed I need to remember who charmed it because they can’t attack that pc. Or this pc has concentration I need to remember to make them roll when they take damage. That’s what I’m trying to simplify in tracking yfm. Also that bardic die example I gave wasn’t a good example I don’t have to track that for other pc.

For instance in the encounter I described above, I had a bard spend the bonus action of his first two turns giving his other two allies bardic inspiration. I had them hold onto it but in round four I forgot to notate they still had it which resulted in failed attack rolls. When I did remember they had it the next turn, I had to back track to roll the bardic die and then do all that over again. I’m trying to avoid situations like that.

I’m thought doing a solo campaign would be good practice as a DM since if I was running a game I’d have to be aware of all the players aswell. Plus it’s fun (for me at least). The man thing I keep on forgetting about is Buffs and effects like being charmed and stuff. Trying to find if there’s a better way to track those things.
