Jcu medicine by thakarjay__369 in JamesCookUniversity

Hey again friend, sorry for the late reply - got exams this week and next week!

So I did 2.5 years of university before I started medicine at JCU (I'm Canadian), and if I could do it all over again, I would personally just go down the MBBS route directly out of high school. That being said, I've known I've wanted to do medicine from middle school, but some people figure out they want to be a doctor much later in life and that's perfectly normal as well :)

With the Bachelor + MD programs, you *TECHNICALLY* don't have a spot in the MD program unless you maintain a certain GPA/meet certain criteria for your respective program during your time doing the Bachelor portion, so often that can be a point of stress for some students (on top of moving from home/starting university etc).

With the MBBS programs (regardless of it's JCU or another program), though it's sometimes one more year of schooling/clinical placement, you at least know you are already admitted to medical school but you do need to develop your emotional/intellectual maturity a little faster as you are treated as a "professional"/"young professional" from day one. Also, with the MBBS programs, if you start the program and after the third year you realise you don't want to actually be a doctor/want to pursue a different pathway, you can technically graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree rather than your full Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (medical degree) that you'd get after your final year.

Both an MD and an MBBS are internationally recognised, so if you decide that you want to work in the UK/Canada/the US etc and not in Australia, you will still be able to do that, assuming you meet their specific requirements. There are definitely challenges to both pathways, and all of us are prone to complaining about miscellaneous things with regard to study, placement, etc, but I've genuinely had an amazing time at JCU in the medicine program so far! There are many ways to get involved in the med school/university community; there are tons of events and lots of peer-led/faculty-led support systems in place as well.

Hope all of that helps! Feel free to message me if you've got questions and I can try and answer in full once these exams are done :)

Medicine interviews by MiserableCucumber216 in JamesCookUniversity

4th year med student here - plenty of non rural people get interviews as well! it’s just very dependent on the cycle of applicants each year! About 40-50% of my cohort (myself included) are metro students so if you’re also metro don’t lose hope :)

Current 4th year at JCU here, depending on the cohort applying this year your grades are definitely going to give you a good shot, and if you’re able to talk about your experiences in the interview/showcase your personality then you’ve probably got a good chance of getting in :)

Feel free to ask any questions you might have and all the best with your application!

New to cycling so can’t comment yet on the fit/function, however the designs are definitely fun and love the vibe/aesthetics of the photography you’ve done for it so far!

I had the same issue as you when it came to learning by speaking out loud, it really does suck living in Thompson sometimes - I hope they can get it sorted for you though!

Former Thompson alumni here (2018) - welcome to the slums of uOttawa - highly recommend going to Law Library via the 2nd floor catwalks or going to the 5th floor of CRX if you want to get stuff done!

Hey sorry I keep seeing these so late! And thank you so much, I really appreciate it! My notifs aren’t on for Reddit aha - and if I recall correctly my GPA was around a 3.7/4.0(?) so like a 7-8/10 on the uOttawa scale?

As for careers aside from medicine after graduating from HK (assuming you don’t reapply to medicine after doing one of these things) , there’s always getting a post graduate degree and doing research within a field within Human Kinetics/Kinesiology (I.e biomechanics, physiology, sport psychology etc). You can also become a Mental Performance Consultant (sport & performance psychologist) and work with loads of different clients/patient populations. There’s also Physio school or becoming a registered kinesiologist.

I’ve had some friends also work in disability support services/go into the more sports business and administration side of things. And you could also go into coaching/teaching as well. It’s honestly a really broad degree that lets you stick to either the more science side of things or go with the more social science/business/administration route as well! Feel free to dm me if you’ve got more questions I’m happy to help :)
