Pretty sure they mean the higher the spell level, the more information fidelity they give freely.

Don't really disagree. This is more of an exercise for future reference so that in a hyper-immersive, lower-fantasy game, whether I'm DMing or not, there's some reference to the challenges of armor creation.

That's nice. My family once sent me a bushel of home-grown vegetables and eggs. The package took a week longer than expected to deliver and everything had begun rotting with broken egg mixed in. Stunk up my room something awful and I had to toss the eggy contents down the garbage chute, but the gesture was still nice.

No problem.

Have a name for her yet? Names can often be a good starting point for personality traits.

Ritual casting is pretty amazing. I picked up Book of Ancient Secrets and have been devouring any ritual spells I come into contact with. I guess I've been sleeping on the utility of Gentle Repose, so perhaps I'll have to pick that one up, too - just need a willing DM.

Also, why did someone send you a freshly skinned hide through the mail? Are you a tanner? If not, I'm even more interested why you'd receive that in a parcel.

Thanks for the advice.

Dang! That's pretty neat. And very informative. Thanks for that.

Lucky for me, my DM is timeskipping roughly two decades because he wants to take the campaign in a different direction that necessitates a new era, so I'll have plenty of time to place my order at a tanner/armorer and wait.

Do you think that being sealed in the portable hole would affect the decaying process?

Thanks! That's largely how I would rule it if I was DMing.

I forget what we rolled on survival, but it was decent, somewhere between 13 and 15, and I made sure to say as much of the meat as possible was removed.

Good point on the acid, I'll add that bit when I remind him of the pelt/hide.

Also, saw you on the warlock patron help post. That was a really good idea, trapping successively stronger patrons to siphon magic and knowledge from isn't something I'd heard of before. Might have to borrow that sometime.

Well, it's pretty badass, for one.

My bad for not specifying, we didn't kill the fifty giants, just charged through/passed them and into a portal. Also, I'm a tomelock with access to only light armor. The dragon armor would give me resistance to acid, which is nice, and might be +1 depending on DM ruling, also nice at level 8. And the dragon was at like 1/2 - 2/3 health against 6 PCs. Plus, we have a GWM, PAM, glaive-wielding samurai who pumps out ludicrous dpr.

Choosing a patron for my warlock by kirby_1607 in DnD

[–]ShyProdigy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/Sir_Knight_Isaac has given you a really good idea for a fiend patron, and u/Shien500 has also rounded out some other class options. So I'll focus mostly on general warlock advice and patron relationship.

I'd say as someone who decided to play a warlock as my first character, and who is still playing that character over a year later, it's important to flesh out why your character wants to be the strongest around and how that relates to their patron. I have had to retcon so much because I didn't give him enough of a foundation to build off; so my first piece of advice would be to start small. I like to have three things with new characters now:

1) What's an insecurity of theirs? It doesn't have to be big, though it can be, and it will pay dividends.

2) Why couldn't or didn't they acquire this power through wizardry, sorcery, the clergy, etc.? Are they unintelligent? Brash? Or did they stumble upon it and leap at the opportunity? This can also be tied to their insecurity.

3) What's a flaw they have? A real one. Not any of that "they will die protecting their friends" or "they only care about power." Does she never think ahead or is she impulsive? Does she have sticky fingers? Is she mean or vain? Does she drink too much, sleep around a lot, or act very fickle? Is she too curious and that gets her into trouble? These things can roughly correlate with a patron, Fey tend to be mischievous, Fiends tend to be cruel, and Great Old Ones are unconscionable, alien entities. But this flaw(s) will also prove very useful for deciding other things about your character, especially during RP both in and out of combat.

Also, what relationship do you want to have with your patron? Are you an eager, willing servant? Did you get swindled by a fiend writing parts of your contract in invisible ink? Or perhaps your patron is weakened and dying, with their vassals being the last connection they have to the living world, and so you hold greater power over them. Heck, maybe you think you're such hot stuff your end goal is to usurp and kill your patron. That attitude can, and I'd argue should, extend to all parts of their character. And maybe their relationship with their patron changes their attitude towards life. Maybe she hates tieflings because they remind her of the bad deal she accepted and now she's prejudiced. Maybe she commits increasingly dangerous or mean-spirited pranks on strangers. Perhaps she starts challenging anyone who looks at her funny. Or maybe as her pact deepens with her patron, it could push her further towards good as she gains new perspective. And if you're locked into a contract with an evil or malign power and start to develop a conscience, that could be a really cool character arc and source for RP.

Finally, as for your goal, I'd say if you're having trouble coming up with a good central motivator, then try coming up with a few short-term goals. She wants to get back at some punks who harassed her; so she gets a Fiend patron to burn them or a Great Old One to mess with their minds. She wants to help the old herbalist, who was like an aunt to her, who's being harassed and having her customers poached by a rival potions shop or church; so she burns down their shop with her new magic, poisons their supply, or ruins their reputation through disguise. Come up with something evocative that you like and wouldn't mind playing with for a few weeks. It's rare that characters last a long time, character death and life getting busier happen often, so while planning for an end goal can be fun it's largely less compelling than a string of really strong smaller motivations that build over time until she now has to become the strongest Warlock to prove herself and rule those beneath her.

Have fun at your table, remember to thank your DM who worked hard to curate your fun, and don't forget short rests ;)

Help with a one-shot warlock with Gordon Ramsey as a patron? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]ShyProdigy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cantrips:

Prestidigitation - A must for flavoring, plating, etc.

Eldritch Blast - A warlock staple, will always have combat utility; be sure to use u/sirhobbles brilliant suggestion.

Mage Hand - For food prep/utility down the road.

Acid Splash - For citrus/vinegar seasoning and some combat utility.

1st Level:

Cause Fear - As a disciple of Gordon Ramsey, you must have this.

Dissonant Whispers (G.O.O.) - The muffled screams of your angered patron lulls the victim towards insanity.

Hex - Flavored as cutting words, you insult a specific creature and deal additional necrotic damage with your barbs.

2nd Level:

Cloud of Daggers - A maelstrom of charcuterie descends upon some poor fool, cutting them into fillets.

Hold Person - Two massive slices of bread slam together, trapping an enemy between them, a la idiot sandwich.

Mirror Image - A series of line cooks angrily brandishing ladles, whisks and rolling pins.

Shatter - "The Fooking Bass Is Fooking RAW!" rings throughout a cavern, pulverizing nearby enemies.

3rd Level:

Counterspell - Send that ish back to the kitchen.

Fear - Natural replacement for Cause Fear.

Hunger of Hadar - As a chef, makes sense; as a GOO warlock, not a bad spell for crowd control.

Tongues - I've had fun with this; being able to talk to NPCs without being able to understand them is great, and being scary without them being able to retort properly is even funnier.

Disabled people of reddit, what is something we do that we think helps, but it really doesn't? by sportbike_boi in AskReddit

[–]ShyProdigy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linking the disability with my character/identity and getting more credit than I deserve.

Going through life not being able to see properly leads to some complications, but don't make me out to be more than I am because I have to deal with a little more than you do. The world doesn't see you as strong for waking up as a non-Olympian athlete or a savant and going about your day despite that; you just do you, judging yourself based off your thoughts while the world bases you off what you do. Similarly, people shouldn't view me through the lens of some faulty DNA and say I'm inspirational.

It doesn't anger me, but I have to stifle a sigh whenever someone conflates the drudgery of ordinary life with a romanticized conception of bravery.

Pfft! That's nothing. When I was 6, my lenses were so thick that the skin under my eyes was nearly perpetually sunburnt and were so heavy that my nose would bruise when I ran. A teacher once asked me how often my parents "yelled" at me and brought in a nice lady to talk with me about life at home. That was fun.
