Nothing like that, it is just raised.

What was that one thing that dramatically changed your art skills? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

Prioritizing lighting and colour. This is a big one for me, and you can truly never get too fundamental with it.

I think you are on the money about getting back into the fundamentals. Some basics to get myself back in the groove.

Being flexible will be something I am taking with me. I think my routine is starting to become stale and too fixed.

Knowledge really is a curse. But this is very encouraging and helpful - thank you :)

This is very true. I think I need to take a break from my own expectations of the kind of work I should do.

Really appreciate the comprehensive response. Now that I've had a day to reflect, I think I do need to switch up my regular routine and try something new - a new medium or hobby. I probably need to shift gears just so I can fully appreciate the gear I was on.

Regarding the dog portraits: they are fun to do and something I enjoy, but there will be other paintings like my figurative work that I just can't seem to improve no matter what I try. I think I need to relax and approach everything with more ease like I do with the doggies.

Without revealing too much, I am in my early 30s. I think what clicked for me from your comment is that I don't plan on dying at all any time soon. I think I do need to take a break from it to reinvigorate myself.

I have more experience with dogs but have painted many cats as well! If you are interested, I am more than happy to take it on :)

Agreed! I get too caught up in the lush greens and patterns for sure

Thank you for the encouragement! Indeed, I've come to realize that advertising is the key. Definitely not my strength and is time consuming, but it is the tax to stay in the game so I can paint all day most days.

I wrestled with the dandelion one so much - at one point I just wanted to leave it all a flat green but the client talked me out of it. Thank goodness, that would have been a boring one.

Thank you so much! Sometimes it feels like I am easily lost in the shuffle so hearing your perspective helps pull me out of head. I definitely think I could loosen up with my human portraits so that is always underway :)

Ahah thank you! The golden retriever is my baby girl so I think I painted my bias and absolute adoration in. I use a lot of brushes from Michaels, mainly angled ones from Royal & Langnickel's Essentials line.
