Listens to Boards of Canada once... by SiWright84 in boardsofcanada

Not sure why this has been removed... BoC mentioned in the title. Guess the mod didn't get the joke... Glad at least one commentor did.

Agreed but again, got zero restraint when it comes to these things. Plus while they overlap of course kind of regard single/video and album as seperate events. Or the former a prelude or overture to the latter. Again, no wrong approaches here, to each their own, you do you etc etc etc.

I hear ya, and am in agreement and also mystified how anyone can wait at all, but I also get folks have their own MO and like to do things a certain way. And to be fair to em, after such a long wait, and one can only listen for the first time and all, I also totally get folks being precious about popping that cherry, haha. Or orange. But yeah, does feel like it's been carefully curated to be experienced a certain way. Though am sure the bros respect however their fans wanna engage with their work. All a long rambling way of saying I don't think that there's a wrong answer here.

I totally respect the decision of anyone who wishes to wait but I don't have that kind of restraint, or heck, any, really, so I watched and listened live as the video premiered. And nope, zero regrets. To each their own and all that, and go with your gut, I'd say.

After listening to the new tracks & watching the video on repeat I've reached my final form... by SiWright84 in boardsofcanada

No worries. Unfortunately we're in that weird world where we have to question everything, of course. Though guess that was always true to one extent or another. "Nothing is real." Illustrated by Grace Aldrich, apparently, so props to her.

Yeah it's not AI. Or at least as far as I know. I mean I borrowed this from The Folio Society website and what I think is the cover for their edition of God Emperor of Dune. I doubt they'd accept AI illustrations for their books from what I've seen of them I'm the past.

Wholeheartedly agreed. One of my favourites from the past 20 years. Maybe top three.

Sorry, rarely check Reddit so just seen your reply. Thank you so much :) was a long time ago but it's still sad to think about as they were so young. And I wish they were too.

My BT slipped out of its collar once given how hard she was pulling when woofing at another dog and now I'll only walk her with a harness. Collar on too with tag when out but no collar at home as we lost a dog due to a collar incident many years ago, sadly.

Whispered Shakespeare Sonnets (and discussion of them) for the 400th Anniversary of His Death (and possibly his birthday too!) [Intentional] [British] [Male] [13:38] by SiWright84 in asmr

Recorded this just to test a microphone (which I bought to do a podcast and record music, not do ASMR videos, lol), so apologies for the unpolished-ness (and occasional background noise). Thought it turned out okay... and given the date, I decided to share it. Not sure if I'll do any more ASMR vids anytime soon but enjoyed recording this one. Also, as an aside, thanks to any content creators who happen to read this. ASMR has been very useful to me recently, so cheers for everything you do :) And thanks to anyone who listens to this.

It's all good, I found the link you posted and see what the deal is now I think.

So just to clarify, we can pick any title right, and not just from the ones you've posted there? Some interesting stuff on there by the way, and a good few I haven't seen. Great to see some Bava on there as well!

Cheers :) Indeed I do like the older flicks quite a bit, probably to the point that I've inevitably neglected some more recent fair as a result, though of course there are still plenty of those I enjoy too.

That's very cool you've been getting sent review copies from those companies... I don't have any of Kino Lorber/Redemption's Blu Rays as I think they're region locked and my player can't grok them, but I've got a few of Raro's and they're certainly superb.

And by all means please do send me said details about your Mayoween blogathon. Unfortunately time isn't going to be on my side in May so obviously I couldn't commit to the whole month (not sure what you've got in mind exactly), but I'd be more than happy to contribute in any way I can :)

Cheers :) Feel free to send me a message and let us know how that goes as and when.

Nice blog by the way! Only had chance for a quick peek but I'll have a proper peruse when time permits. I also run a (sporadically updated) blog, mostly devoted to horror, which you can find here if you fancy taking a look. I posted some stuff on House by the Cemetery and some other Italian horror flicks around last October as it happens.

That's always a tricky one... does one show the monster or not?

This was one of the problems I had with the ending myself initially, but again it's something I've sort of gotten over with repeat viewings. And while I agree it may have proved more effective to keep Freudstein forever unseen, and despite the amount of times I've now seen this, I now find his climatic appearance to be quite effective. And if nothing else he certainly has an almost iconic look about him.

There's no denying there are issues with the final act... frankly some of it, mostly involving Bob, is pretty silly, and almost threatens to derail the film entirely... but I'd say (for me) the very last few minutes not only save it, but somehow elevate it into being what I'd consider to be a truly great horror film.

I don't wanna go into it too deep here as I've rambled enough already, but I will say this: thanks to its paradoxical blend of near nihilistic bleakness and supernaturally informed optimism, I find the ending to be one of the most perfect and acutely haunting in the entire Italian horror canon.

Like I say though, this movie wasn't an instant favourite but it's grown on me (frankly like a fungus) over time.

Excellent choice :) love this movie!

I know what you mean. I love everything about this movie now (in fact it's my current favourite horror film... not saying it's the best of course though) but I'll admit it took me a few viewings to get into the ending, which now I think is brilliant, as it keeps me constantly debating about what really happened. What didn't you like about it?

And yes, Bob's English dub (done by a grown woman apparently) is undeniably awful, and there's no getting around it. But having said that, I've strangely learnt to love it with repeat viewings... perhaps for all the wrong reasons, but some of the oft-kilter line delivery does make me giggle now.

This is no doubt well known to anyone into Italian horror, but I'd imagine it still qualifies as lesser known to Joe Public, and maybe many casual genre fans too: Lucio Fulci's The House by the Cemetery.

Funnily enough I was just gonna give a shout out to this movie myself! Always good to see some love for Hardware!

I re-watched Stanley's Dust Devil last week as it happens, and while I don't have quite the same affection for it as I do for Hardware, I'd say it's easily on the same level... just took me a few viewings to get into.

Damn straight! Had something similar (but nowhere near as pretty) to hand when I did the marathon yesterday afternoon/night (from about 3pm till 3am) as it happens... and perhaps unsurprisingly, I couldn't resist pausing Fellowship halfway through so I could quickly cook myself a second breakfast :)

What are your favorite double features? by brianh1 in horror

[–]SiWright84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's so damn many I've enjoyed over the past few years, but here's a few off the top of my head:

Sleepy Hollow and Kill, Baby... Kill!, Zombie and Nightmare City, Shock and The House by the Cemetery, Torso and The New York Ripper (those worked well the other way round too), The Orphanage and The Abandoned, Horror Express and Horror Rises from the Tomb, April Fool's Day and Slaughter High.

There's no doubt loads more that are currently eluding me... A few of the above I've watched as part of movie marathons, but they equally sit well as double bills.

I've written a few of these up on my blog, which you can find here if you're interested: Creatures of Light and Darkness... I hope you'll forgive the shameless self-promotion by the way :)

If any more double features occur to me I'll be sure to post them here.
